John Prados the designer of AH's classic "Rise and Decline of the Third Reich" along with many, many other titles has gone to the great convention in the sky.

He died on November 29th, at the age of 71.

Here are his main wargaming titles:

He was also the author of many significant books on WWII, modern warfare and intelligence gathering. Here is a nice memoriam listing his major books:

Wargaming is a richer hobby because of his efforts. He will be missed. Condolences to his family and friends.

Damn.  He was, (and remains) a wargaming legend.  And his books (in particular Combined Fleet Decoded) were excellent.

I agree. The world needs more wargamers, especially the great ones.  :'(

My first S&T mag included Year of the Rat, his first wargame!  RIP

I played more Third Reich than practically any other wargame, aside from possibly Victory in the Pacific.  But Third Reich was the superior game, undoubtedly.

I still remember how exciting the various Axis variants were.  The best option, I think, was #7, where Turkey comes into the war on the side of the Germans.  I also remember #4, where Spain comes into the war on the Axis side as well.  Funnily enough, I don't remember any of the Allied variants.

I already posted about his passing the other day.  His death was mentioned in the NYT, which is rare for a game designer.

Also, a thoughtful write up:
