Title: Epic?
Post by: Jarhead0331 on January 30, 2019, 10:32:19 AM
Is anybody using Epic yet as an alternative to Steam? I really had no interest in trying it, but recently the platform scored some relatively significant exclusive titles. I checked it out on the web and downloaded the client and so far I am not impressed. Not only did I dislike the layout and found it hard to navigate and find what I was looking for, but it also tried installing Fortnite onto my system unprompted. That really annoyed the piss out of me.

I also have security concerns. When Fortnite was in early beta, I had contemplated trying it out so I created an Epic account. Since then, I have never used it, but I receive frequent warnings that people are trying to hack the account, or access it without authorization. I pretty much ignore the alerts since I have no real personal details associated with the account, no financial information or anything like that. However, if I started using the account to buy games, that would obviously change.

Anyway, just wondering if anybody else has checked it out and if so, what your experiences have been like.

That's why we love having you as the Boss. You're always the first one to try out latest and greatest and tell us if it's really worth our time. And with this one, apparently not.

Well based on your original post I would not even bother to try out Epic.  If they are having security issues I don't trust them with my personal information or my bank account.

Steam is pretty good security wise.  Even the mighty can take a fall sometimes (i.e. Sony) but for the most part Steam has been doing pretty good.  (hope I didn't jinx it now)

I have had several emails telling me that people were trying to login to my Epic account, but that was months ago when I briefly played Fortnite.
It has been quiet on that front for quite a while now however.

I have no intention of using Epic's store yet, but I feel it might be a good thing Valve has someone competing now at the very least.

But if Epic keeps on shoving stuff onto one's pc without asking I am definately not likely to ever buy from their store. Exclusivity or not.
This is a typical issue and behaviour people should vote against by not pulling their wallet IMO.

Thanks for the heads up JH! Always nice indeed to have someone riding shotgun! 😜

Apparently they also sign you up to various mailing lists and make it difficult to opt out.  I've been hearing all sorts of shit about Epic lately.

Just today, I was reading about a bait and switch they did with the latest Metro game.  They've been taking preorders on Steam for ages, and now, two weeks prior to release, they suddenly announce that it will only be available through their own store.  Physical copies, that were supposed to contain Steam codes, will now contain Epic codes instead.

The chances of me using their client are zero squared.

I use it for the free fortnightly games. subnautica was the first free game. But really I agree with you. Steam's interface is much more mature and more the traditional windows 95 "detailed" layout I like. The newer "iphone" style non-cluttered minimalist interfaces I don't like. I have always felt that I was being treated like a child. I can absorb much more information than they are willing to give on the first page. All in all not a fan. But should I be happy steam has competition? That is what capitalism is all about right? Because a lot of my friends are split on this EPIC client. Some are afraid steam will die and they will lose all of their games once this market becomes like the streaming market.

I know a lot of the games EPIC have signed as exclusives are only for 12 months BTW. Then I guess they can be sold on steam.

JH, thanks for the heads-up on the Epic site. I was very disappointed to hear that Ubi's Division 2 will be on Epic and not Steam. The upcoming game is a must for me as I'm still playing the first one and enjoy the game as an RPG wrapped in a first-person shooter. The big draw for me on the sequel is the Wash. DC setting since it was my home town for 35 years and I know the downtown area like the back of my hand.

To avoid Epic I'll just buy it through the Ubi site since I already have an account there anyway. I was just reading today on Blues News about Metro fans being really pissed about that game going over to Epic too.

Yep The Division 2 is a must for me as well and I'd be furious right now if I'd been planning to play it on PC.  Luckily I want the PS4 version so at least I've dodged that particular bullet.

i downloaded epic a couple months ago, so far no issues for me.  i haven't been signed up for mailing lists nor has anyone try to hack my account or have any unwanted software installed. it certainly is a bare bone client right now but i am sure steam was not full featured either at its start.  personally i have no problem using it and will continue if they have titles i like.  although part of me would like to have everything on one system like steam, having competition is good for pricing and variety.  i am already using other clients like battle.net origin, and uplay so they aren't exactly full featured either.

it was bad for that recent game being sold on steam than moved to epic, but is that all epics fault?  epic just provided the service, the publisher of the game are the ones to move it, likely so they could have more profit and likely a little publicity.

so i am fine with it at the moment....plan to use it if it has things i want.

Sure, not yet, but they do say some of that is coming.....Steam didn't have that stuff at launch either, it took them many, many years after launch to get those things.  If Epic sticks around, I have no doubt they will also add a better experience over time, just like Steam did.  Still remember the outrage of Steam when it first came out, people didn't want to use that either, they still wanted stuff on physical CDs/DVDs :)  To me, just another option...certainly a little more risk during their startup phase to see if they have staying power....

Link to Steam history.

Again, not saying people should or shouldn't use Epic, just saying I haven't really seen anything Epic is doing that is completely different than others have done before like Steam.  Heck, steam also had credit card/user information breach a few years ago and I have received a number of login attempt warnings with my account...just like practically most online places.

would be interested to see the business model part since things i have read actually are saying it's better because of increased revenue sharing with the developers, likely the reason some of these publishers are making the move.

who knows in the end and everyone's own choice whether to use, just another option for me....if the price is cheaper and the game is available on steam, sure right now i would buy on steam.  but likewise if the same was true for epic, i would have no issue buying it....same choices i make with origin, uplay, etc.

I'm thinking Epic is going to make gains in their market share of users against steam. Their strategy of giving away games througout the year and during the holiday season is very smart. My epic library has been growning dramatically, all without me spending a dime. Then, with the $10 vouchers over Christmas, I even made a few purchases. This, together with their aggressive acquisition of exclusive release rights is going to be effective in making epic much more mainstream. I think the weekly give away is pretty brilliant because a lot of gamers have a growing library of games, and over time, they will naturally become more comfortable with using epic for both purchase and play.

All that said, epic still has a long way to go before it can compete with steam in terms of utility, UI, community features, etc., but I think for some, it's current simplicity is probably seen as a benefit over steam. I find that steams recent facelift is a bit too far in the other direction and it may turn people off. I know I've struggled a little with the newer interface.

I wish, but unlikely.  They develop both the Unreal engine and Fortnite, so basically a license to print money.

Amazing how throwing infinite piles of money at a market gets you a foothold, isn't it?

I've been adding the free games to my account and Epic is still here so I'm guessing they will do okay. The fact they have THEE game engine of choice with Unreal they have a lot of leverage with developers. I don't think I'd convert fully, especially with Uplay. My plan would be to start buying directly from Uplay if there is a game I want from them.

I don't know. Any game is on a time limit just because technology is constantly moving forward. Remember when running a game at 1024x786 was awesome? So do many older games unfortunately. Just getting an old Gary Grigsby game to function playable now is a trip though Google if you are lucky.

I find this to be highly unlikely. There is certainly room in this industry for competition and Steam has a giant head start. I wouldn't lose sleep.

Steam isn't going away any time soon.
They've had a monopoly on PC gaming for over a decade now, it'll take years to break them down.

@Huw, actually Fortnite is not doing as well as it used to. Kids have longed started migrating to other games and Fornite's Battle Royale mode, which never really gets any more interesting, will only generate so much money for so long.
It seems like they've already begun to offer less and smaller bribes to developers.

Why would you hope for this? Their existence will only threaten the competition if the competition fails to adapt or offer a superior user experience. I'm still not a fan of it. I just don't necessarily want them to go out of business. I don't see how anyone benefits from that, other than Steam, financially.

Furthermore, my reservations were (and still are) the product of: (1) rumors about security flaws; (2) aggressive exclusivity deals; and (3) basic UI with bare bones features. However, these are grounds to just continue using another service, like Steam, not a reason to pray for Epic's demise.

I use uplay, origin, GOG, Battle.net, Rockstar Social Club, among others, so i have nothing inherently against using multiple platforms.

Seriously?  We don't need to have this conversation Jarhead, you know damn well why I hate Epic.  You even share some of my concerns.  I have nothing against the half-dozen other stores I can name just off the top of my head (and there are more) - only Epic because of their disgusting practices.  I don't hope GOG fails, for example, even though I have personal reasons not to buy from them.

https://www.bluesnews.com/s/207211/epic-games-store-sales-top-usd-680m-free-games-to-continue-all-year

Epic Games announces that sales on the Epic Games Store have now topped $680 million in total, and over a quarter of a billion dollars of that were spent on third-party PC games. They also say they have now given away 73 free games worth a total of $1,455, and that gamers have claimed over 200 million free games. Finally, they also announce they plan to continue to give away one free game per week throughout the remainder of 2020. Here's word:

    Happy New Year!

New decade means new games and we're looking at a great start with tons of amazing titles coming exclusively to the Epic Games Store in 2020. To kick things off, we're extending our weekly free game program throughout 2020. Every single week, come back to claim your game. Once claimed, it's yours to keep forever.

Thank you to the amazing players and developers for being part of the Epic Games Store community!

In 2020 we'll continue to lead the way in open and developer-friendly store terms, with 88% revenue sharing, support for developer and publisher payment systems, and keyless purchasing integration with Humble (more PC stores coming soon). On top of that, we're offering integration with Epic's platform-independent and store-independent online services with more than 300,000,000 customer accounts and 1,700,000,000 friend connections.

Epic is also helping developers support cross-platform play using the tools we built for Fortnite, with online play across PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iOS, and Android. Dauntless from Phoenix Labs is the first third-party game with Epic-powered support for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. Many more cross-platform games are coming to the Epic Games Store in 2020.

I hope the freebies get better (my opinion).  I finally caved when they gave away Surviving Mars.  I've only grabbed a few (Surviving Mars and DLC, Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, Superhot) and missed a few (Subnautica, Into The Breach) that I thought I might like.  A few others I already had.  Most of the freebies just seem kinda meh...

Okay, that makes 2 of us that admit to it. I think we can officially start a self-help group.

Requirements to join:
1) There are no age or education requirements.
2) Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her gaming problem

I think we should just go with #1.

To be fair to CA, I suspect they took Epic's money so that they would at least break even on Troy.  Given what happened with ToB (their previous Saga title), I wouldn't really blame them.

I just don't want to split up my Total War games between two platforms, especially when the one (Epic) doesn't have any workshop support.  I also don't want to give any more of my money to Beijing than I can help; I'm sure I already give them too much of it as it is.

If you pick up the game for free how are you giving Beijing (or indeed anyone else) any money ?

I share your distaste for subsidising the Chinese state but in this case you would be costing them rather than paying them surely ?

I will probably pick it up for free.

Still wont buy any games off the platform though :-)

ToB is a fairly dark and not very popular subject. I am not surprised it didn't sale so much. I am going to wait as well, mostly because i don't like exclusive deals and also because i want to have my games either on GOG or on steam...I find EPICs launcher to be fairly annoying with popups and the like.

I am very surprised they give it for free for one day....this is a huge loss of money but i guess they hope to attract many new customers.

Thrones of Britannia's failure had far more to do with the "experimental" changes the devs made to the game, rather than the subject matter.  There were also some butt-hurt knobs who insisted Thrones was only a reskinned Attila made as a cash-grab.  :idiot2:

Ark was really the one game I was looking for.

I have seen the following "leaked" list floating around about the 15 games.....but personally, I kind of think its "fake".  Seems like non-typical games they have released before, but who knows, maybe trying to make a big splash.  I guess we'll see later today if the first free game matches.

https://www.bluesnews.com/s/217885/epic-games-launcher-causing-temperature-spikes
https://hothardware.com/news/epic-games-shenanigans-with-cpus

A very active Reddit post discusses graphic card temperature spikes caused by the Epic Games Launcher, even when the program is idle.

The hot hardware experts at Hot Hardware discuss the details of what's going on:

Ultimately, these CPU temperature and usage spikes are not typical of game launchers. When experimenting with the Steam and GOG launchers, CPU idle temps and usage remained nominal and much lower, after an initial brief spike on loading. So what exactly is happening with the Epic Games Launcher that idle temps are spiking and CPU usage is unnecessarily engaged?

Doing some testing on another personal machine, we noticed that the Epic Games Launcher has five different processes open at one time. Out of curiosity, we opened up Glasswire, which is a free network traffic monitor. We could see that the Epic Games Launcher and associated processes were firing off data at regular intervals to over 22 different servers. This was happening whether we had the launcher open, minimized, or in the background. The larger spikes shown in the Glasswire graph below are from when we reopened the Epic Games launcher after closing it.

Another interesting discovery is that the "EpicWebHelper" sent some data to the following URL:

    tracking-website-prod07-epic-961842049.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com

Over the course of approximately an hour, Epic Games sent more data than 514KB of data to some server(s) somewhere. This is more than 14x what Steam and NVIDIA GeForce Experience sent in the background during the same timeframe. While it remains to be seen if the data collection is the cause of the CPU usage issue, something smells fishy here. In fact, it may be advisable to kill off the Epic Games launcher for now, when you're not actively using it.

Game announcement :

HITMAN 3 will act as a platform for the entire trilogy, making it possible for players to import locations that they own from previous HITMAN games and play all 20+ locations from the trilogy in one place. HITMAN 2 players will also have the option to carry over their hard-earned unlocks and progression into HITMAN 3.
The entire HITMAN 3 campaign will be available to play at launch when the game releases in January 2021.

Today :

A new HITMAN 3 Pre-Launch Guide paves the way for the game's launch on Wednesday. Developer IO Interactive reveals that the next installment in their assassination series will not actually allow players to access the locations from their copies of HITMAN 2 as promised when the game was announced. The complication is that the game will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store, which does not actually carry HITMAN 2. The HITMAN 2 locations will be sold separately through an Access Pass, and they say this will carry an 80% discount for two weeks after the HITMAN 3 launch on January 20th. They will be allowing players to carry over unlocks and progress from Steam versions of the prior games through a website.
Title: Re: Epic?
Post by: jamus34 on January 16, 2021, 03:47:53 PM
I don't blame Epic specifically for this, I feel this is strictly on IO interactive and the fact they decided to sign an exclusivity deal with Epic and not realize the implications.

They can make it right if they want, it's up to them to see if they do (or if the resulting outcry makes them).

Title: Re: Epic?
Post by: mbar on January 17, 2021, 09:24:45 AM
With the new Hitman series, a triple A production, IO has been asked time after time to provide a way to disable joystick/gamepad. If you're a flight sim enthusiast, you'll have to manually unplug or disable your HOTAS in order to play. Such a simple thing to ask, but if fell on deaf ears. Which is why I've been giving Hitman games a pass. I played the older ones to death anyway.

Sorry, the team is looking into this with IO. It's never Epic's intent to create a situation where someone who owns a game on Steam would have to buy it again on Epic Games Store.

I picked this up over the weekend, a quality game. Enjoy it a lot with some novel gameplay. One has 2 tech trees to research one deal with moral decisions. Do you make use of child labour vs allow them education etc..

Another concept is giant automations (Think War of the worlds) that will replace the human labour in a building.

It also has an exploration element with some decision choices to make.

Graphics is great, and one can use the fast fwd button, without getting bogged down in micromanagement.

Enjoy the concept of playing in the polar environment, the ongoing issue of keeping your population warm to ensure they are less susceptible to ill health....but then again if you do decide to make the moral choice of amputations to save lives you can replace it with bionic limbs if you choose...     :)

I have it, but only lightly dabbled early on when it was first offered for early access. It did not grab me at the time and I uninstalled it until further development. I'm not suggesting that you take a pass, but for me, it didn't grab a hold. YMMV.

I want to get my mind off COVID and Afghanistan, so I'm thinking about Old World, which is available only on Epic. I have yet to download the Epic client, but if I were to do that, it would be for Old World. Anyone playing it?

I bought it last week, and I'm really enjoying it.  There's an active forum over at civfanatics for the game, and the  staff of Mohawk Games is very active on that board.

They've stated that their current focus is on improving the game's performance and balance, and that more content will be coming for the game in the future.

Regarding the Epic client, Gog Galaxy supports linking your Epic account, so you can launch your Epic purchased games from Galaxy.  It does appear to open an epic process in the background, when you launch the game, but you don't have to open the Epic launcher proper to play.  I've read you can just make a shortcut on your desktop after you've downloaded the game from Epic, and that will bypass the launcher, but I haven't tried it.

I don't think there is any reason to hold out on Epic at this point. I don't like the platform as much as Steam, and will only use it for exclusives, but it seems to run fine and nothing terrible has happened to me...yet.

I agree with Jarhead.  I didn't particularly want to have another game client, but Epic seduced me with all their freebies :-[.  So far I've had 0 problems with it.  Other than all the freebies I've acquired, I've made 2 purchases on Epic, Industries of Titan and GalCiv IV.  I refunded GalCiv IV with no problems.  It just didn't seem much different than the first three.

p.s.  I also like that Epic hands out $10 coupons in some of their sales.  I may grab Old World myself the next time they have a sale with coupons...

I concur with others, have had Epic from day one and have had no issues that I am aware.  Doesn't bother me about the number of clients as already have a bunch anyway (steam, ubi, ea, battlenet, etc.).  If the same product is available on steam and Epic, I'll continue to choose steam as the majority of my library exists there and the epic client isn't as robust.  But I have zero hesitation picking up the weekly free games and buying exclusive items from Epic.

If another new download service came out tomorrow, I wouldn't have an issue with that either if they had things I wanted to purchase....

Honestly, I don't really get the staunch resistance to the Epic launcher.  I know they've drawn a lot of ire with their exclusivity deals, but it's not exactly evil to throw money at developers/publishers to persuade them to leave a platform with a massive stranglehold on the market.  It's kind of annoying not having everything conveniently available on Steam just a mouse-click away, but isn't that how things always were before everything became digitized and Steam started dominating the market?  I remember the days of having to root around my closet and find an old CD case just to get a key to play a game online.  Having to switch between two or three windows on my PC is hardly a nightmare.

The one issue I have with the Epic launcher is that I'm constantly inundated with friend requests from apparent bots, but I don't use the friends service on Epic so I can ignore that easily.

I can see why people would criticize Epic on too many exclusive titles on their site.  I can also see Epic needing to do this in order to have a chance to compete with their giant competitor.

The more I think about it the more I think it's not a bad thing to have accounts in multiple gaming service locations.

My chief concern about installing Epic was due to reports of CPU temperature spikes caused by the launcher.  I gave it a shot once a partial fix was announced and monitored my system.  I didn't see any temp difference on my PC so I'm good with it.

I've had some issues with Epic, but I do not know if it is their launcher, the game or something else

Basically Borderlands 3 starting CTD frequently on me. As far as I know you can't opt out of patches like Steam so no idea if it was my PC, the launcher, the game, a patch or my vid card driver.

Put the game down for a while and started playing again but I do have a new vid card.

Test yer mettle time Gus.  While technically not on sale, there is an opportunity to grab a $10 off coupon (https://www.neowin.net/news/epic-games-store-is-offering-a-10-coupon-for-signing-up-to-its-email-alerts/) at Epic to use on Old World (or any game costing $14.99 and up).  You will have to get a free Epic account and then sign up for email alerts (something you can turn off later).   I just signed up for the alerts and got the coupon in just a few minutes.  Applied it to Old World and bought it...cost was $29.99.  Installing now, but I won't have any/much time in the near future to play with it since we are getting our house ready for sale. :-\

p.s.  The coupon can be earned from now until November 15...any unused coupons will expire.

My mettle is solid (pun intended). I can wait since I just finished up some ancients gaming and am moving towards some medieval/renaissance gaming for the next few months, at least. By the time I am done with that, it will hopefully not be too long until Old World is released beyond Epic. And maybe I can catch a combo deal with the original game and the upcoming DLC.

Hopefully.

There is a lot to dislike about the underwhelming Epic website, but they have Old World. After the bitter disappointment of Humankind that is all I care about. I may never buy another game from Epic, but they had the salve I needed  when I needed it after Amplitude burned me. BTW the ratings for Humankind continue to crash.

I had a really bad taste in my mouth after a byproduct of the Steam-Epic schism.  I bought the new Hitman title, Hitman 3, on the Epic store because it's not available on Steam yet.  The new Hitman trilogy lets you play the levels from the older games, but only if you own them on the same platform, which I only found out after I bought the game - wrongly assuming that my linked IOI account with my Hitman 1 & 2 progress would also detect that I *own* those games.  Not so.  To be fair, I'm not sure if this is more IOI's poor programming or Epic being greedy.

Anyways, this was all assuaged when I requested a refund for Hitman 3 after finding out that it will come to Steam this month.  I got my refund processed to my PayPal within seconds of requesting it, including all the DLC that I bought.  Don't know how often this will work, but for a one-off refund this is a thousand times better than the clunky-as-hell Steam refund system that only gives you Steam credit dollars.
Title: Re: Epic?

Steam doesn't just give refund credit, for all my returns including recent one I got refunded the same way I paid, which was PayPal credit card.

How long did it take y'all?  For me the UI was a pain to wrangle with to properly put in the refund request, and once I did it took 12-24 hours for the refund to go through.  On Epic it was seconds.  It's still the inferior platform to Steam overall, but I was impressed with how quickly I went from "bad taste in my mouth" to "oh that wasn't so bad I guess."

Just returned a game a couple of days ago.  I thought the UI/interface was pretty easy.  Selected the game, choose a reason, and think answered another question.  Took less than a minute and received confirmation about my refund within about an hour or less.  I don't have any issue with EPIC, I have used it from the start...but haven't had any bad experiences with Steam and the refund process but I also don't return a ton.  I suspect if people do it frequently, they might go through additional checks, not sure.

https://www.bluesnews.com/s/244694/epic-games-store-year-in-review

A post on the Epic Games Website discusses how the Epic Games Store performed in 2021. Epic continued to give away free games throughout the year as a way of building an audience. The post puts that program into some very large numbers, even co-opting the term "snag" from our forums as the appropriate term to describe collecting a freebie:

Players bought more games and played them for longer in 2021. We now have 917 titles for sale on the Epic Games Store, nearly doubling what we had available to customers in 2020. About $840M was spent through the store in 2021, up 20% from 2020. Third-party games represented 36% of all sales with more than $300M in player spending, a 12% increase from 2020.

We continued to give away free games each week. Many developers and publishers collaborated with us over the year to give away 89 free games worth $2,120. Over 765 million free games were claimed by players, bringing those titles to a new audience. 76 free games broke their peak concurrent user records on PC, with an average of 13 times their all-time records! That's incredible engagement.

Just a heads up that 3 of the DLCs for Daemon X Machina are also free...

Yeah but free games!  It's a solid tradeoff IMO.  I never launch the stupid thing unless I'm playing something on the platform, so 99% of the time I don't even remember it's there.

There was also the hushed murmurs of the Chinese stealing all our info from the client from a few years back. I realize that they probably have all my (worthless) info anyway, but things like that stay with me.

What's funny is them proudly proclaiming 917 games available on the Epic Store.  My current Epic library consists of 234 games for which I have not spent a cent.  I've even missed weeks and/or skipped things that were of no interest, and I still have over a quarter of their catalog.  25%+ of their catalog, for free.  Seems like a good business model...

So I'm about three years late to this topic, but since it's still sitting on page #1 (yeah okay, right at the bottom but it's there!) I thought I'd chime in on the original concerns and thoughts about using Epic. For me, I heard enough negatives to stay clear of ever purchasing anything through it. On the flip-side, for the last two years or so I have religiously collected every single free game they have released. I'd say about 60% I either ended up owning already or just had no interest in playing. But then there are gems like TW Warhammer, Remnant, Jurassic Park Evolution etc etc. So for me, Epic represents a never ending supply of free games, but it will never be more than that for me.

Bloons TD 6 is an enormously popular TD game for younger folks.  Almost 200,000 reviews on Steam, 97% of them positive, and among the best TD games out there (if a bit silly on the graphics).

I like the fact that Epic passes back more revenue to game makers (I've ready 85% versus 70%).  I've never had complaints with Steam, but monopolies are never good for competition.

Same. This is why I have decided not to buy any Epic games. The only one I have is the free Total War Troy. I did just buy some discounted DLC's for that game only because the base was free. No desire to deal with the mod issues otherwise. And you can get much cheaper Steam keys than games on Epic or Steam on other sites. Not possible with Epic.

I've already had Chess Ultra on Steam for some time; don't expect much in the way of tutoring - it's all about playing the game on a beautiful board and in that it succeeds. If chess is you're thing and all you want is a great looking board to play on then this should be your go-to. If you're looking for chess software that also includes a lot of lessons etc then I'd search elsewhere.

I agree. Deserts of kharak is a worthy land based prequel to homeworld. I was left wanting more in the skirmish map department though.

Epic laid off about 15% of its workforce, or just south of 900 employees.  They are also selling Bandcamp, which they just acquired last year.

It is very difficult for me to sympathize with Sweeney's "spending more money than we earn" justification given their puzzling decision to acquire Bandcamp in addition to throwing piles and piles of money at devs and publishers to secure them as Epic exclusives.  "Spending more money than we earn" was demonstrably their strategy all this time.  Funny how there's no mention of Sweeney or any other high level executives taking so much as a pay cut.

I have to admit that up until this point I've been pretty ambivalent about supporting Epic, but now I have no desire whatsoever to buy games from them.

Not sure how accurate this is, but an interesting take from a 3D artist in the industry.

QuoteIt seems like UEFN is the main reason behined ~900 Epic Games Employees being layed out today.

Ever since UEFN released, Epic started a new Engagement Payout System, something completely different from the old one. People were getting paid based on things like Player Counts, Play Time, etc.

As we all know, the discovery moderation team does their job very poorly. For the past Half a Year Discovery was flooded with poorly made maps created just for money, which often were breaking the Island Rules. As far as the map was doing good and making Epic money, they simply didn't care about the Rule Breaking and even put such maps in Epic's Picks.

This resulted in maps like "Skibidi Toilet vs Ohio Grimace Shake Zonewars" becoming the most played type of maps. The Creators were making thousands of dollars off of these maps. The worst thing is a single person could make like 10 of these maps, then they would all be Featured and that person becomes rich very quickly with little to no effort put into it.

Now, let's get to the point. Today, ~900 of Epic Employees were layed out due to Epic having some financial issues and "Spending and investing too much money than they should have". This could have been avoided very easily. The Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars the Spam Map Makers were making could have went to the Epic Employees, but I guess Featuring "Auschwitz Zonewars" in discovery was more important. Some of the Map Makers were making more money than an average Epic Employee Monthly. This should have never happened...

I am no longer able to log in to my Epic account. The login page always steers me into registering as a new account. I cannot get to a place where I can enter my password as part of a login process. And I cannot get to customer support without logging in first.

FUBAR

Later...finally got logged in. Weird.

That is a concern moving forward for any further glitches though. Their must be email support surely.

I could not find it. And this is not the first site I have seen that seems to intentionally make help impossible to get. Some companies' phone "help" lines have a sort of insane circular stall tactics as well.

It's disappointing to encounter companies that seemingly make it intentionally difficult to receive assistance when encountering issues. I share your sentiments about the bewildering nature of some customer support systems, including those with circular stall tactics.
In times like these, finding a supportive community can be invaluable. Platforms like qtoptens.com (https://qtoptens.com/northgard-top-10-best-clans/) often host discussions and provide advice on gaming-related matters. Engaging with fellow gamers who may have encountered similar challenges could offer valuable insights and solutions.
Hang in there, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need further assistance or just want to chat about gaming experiences.

I'm having the problem that games on the Epic launcher are buggy as shit.

Example I got Gaurdians of the Galaxy on one of the freebies and I've had it hard lock and glitch out to where I had to Calt-D.

Deus Ex Mankind Divided free from 3/14 through 3/21.

Excellent game that has somewhat been superseded by Cyberpunk 2077, but still very much worth experiencing.
