I found this site which has a couple of designs that are about half the price of the "geek-chic" designs:  https://www.boardgametables.com/features

Actually they aren't much different than Geek Chic.

The tables they have are more or less equivalent to the Portal: https://www.boardgametables.com/features

I added some cup holders, a couple of drawers and a cover to the Board Game Tables table and it came out to $3k and change. I didn't closely examine the specs for exact size, but according to Geek Chic's website Portals commonly run from $2k to $3k depending on size, add-ons, and any customization.

I still like your idea of shopping Goodwill - I have a table top that I got from a store that was closing down. It's fine for having a few folks around for D&D, but what I'd really like is something to host a serious minis game: 4' x 8'. Geek Chic has a less expensive option, the Spartan, which starts at $3800 and can go to about $5k. Still, I'd like a Vizier as it can easily double as a real dining room table. And, of course, the Sultan would be perfect for a big man cave.

Found tonight in my weekly Goodwill table browsing session:



$15.99.  Perfect table.  Approx the same size as the one that I just completed.  The top is secured by 8 screws from the underside; an easy converstion.  I was so tempted to grab it as back up but I just don't have the room for any more tables around here!  Point is, you can get some great tables for gaming for dirt cheap and if you have the desire, can easily modify them with extra goodies (hidden playing area, cup holders, etc).  Fun stuff!

Had to dig around to find what the Carolina tables look like - very nice indeed!  If you win it, do you cover shipping (which would have to be rather expensive I'd think)?

I'm not sure I ever found an image of what they're supposed to be giving away. What I found wasn't than impressive, so I'm guessing I didn't find it.

The light rope is a great idea. Does it give enough light to make the counters more visible?

Yes.  That pic was taken in a dark room.  Plus I have my overhead light that I can center on an area that needs attention.  Previously, I would have to turn on the light in the room plus use that overhead light - not anymore!
