I was thinking about running an ARMA 2 server for a month or so. Any interest out there in scheduling some Grogheads time? I'm not looking for funding, just folks that want to play.

OK. The response has been better than expected. I ordered the server so it should be up and running in a day or so. Once I have the details I'll post back with some suggested game times and server details. The IA in the game is pretty killy so we don't need to fill all 10 slots for the game to be entertaining. I figure the server will be mod-less at the start since most are just learning the game and I will be learning server hosting.

I'd recommend grabbing the British Armed Forces DLC as well. It adds a bunch of new toys and the ability to flip between two types of sights on the same weapon (ie, if you've got a rifle with a night-scope and iron sights, you can choose which to use.) I don't know if they added this feature to the base game after releasing BAF or not.
OK, the server is up and running. It's not running any mods or expansions beyond OA. It's a vote server right now and has the standard missions.

DV8 and I played a quick co-op mission that uhhh.....didn't go all that well. Friendly fire....isn't! (or were you just fragging your squad leader because I was inept?)

I'm just sure. I ordered everyone into line and then got them to move in on the fort and then (I'm assuming) your grenade exploded in the middle of the formation and killed 5 of us.

Lost connection again? Oh well. I think that last map was too big for just 2 players.
I ended up with 7 infantry and 2 supply trucks killed.
Yeah. I live at the DSL extreme so we lose the connection frequently. That was fun. The server will stay up so everyone enjoy until next time.

Weird- I was able to launch ARMA2 OA last night no prob but now, when I try to launch the base game (which came together with OA and installed at the same time) I get a "bad serial number added at setup" error. However, I was never prompted for the Key at all during install. Should I just wipe and re-D/L the local content or is that irrelevant to CD KEY issues?
NM I found the answer. Had to shut down Steam, restart as Admin, restart game. 1st time I've ever run into this... ???
My son had similar issue with it. The install is very buggy.

DV8, I hope to get on by 6PM PST but I've got to go run some errands first so I might not make it.
Was able to connect to the server using AO but not the base game. It also said I was using a modified game (BAF?) but I don't recall adding that to the bundle when purchasing. I've a few hours of paying Mr Mom before I can play for real so I'll see y'all approx 21:30 EST if all goes well. Warning to the rest of you- I have not gone through boot and will probably be as helpless as an eight year old schoolgirl in pigtails until I get some time under my belt, learning all the switches and buttons. Did I mention pigtails?

BAF is the British Armed Forces DLC. What the game is telling you is that you don't have it installed so if you end up in a server using BAF gear, you end up with the "BAF lite" version. I think that means you can only drive or pilot vehicles from the exterior view, unit skins are very low resolution, and weapons sights are blurry and have lowered functionality.

Yes you can use joysticks, pedals, throttles, controllers, and TrackIR in the game.
I just tried to find the server but I couldn't. I clicked the filter button and then put in the server number and nothing came up. Does that mean the server is not up or did I do it wrong?
I was able to connect using the'Remote' button and then entering the address (66.225.235.130:2902) in the popup box.
Just type "grogheads" into the filter and it should come up.

Nope. If you end up in a mission using items found in either of those 2 DLCs, you'll get the "lite" [sic] version. You can still use it but the textures will be very low res.

I've loaded what looks like a good 6 (or 8, can't remember) Co-Op mission if anyone wants to join Nam and I tonight. I think we need about 5 or more to make it works since there is no AI for the attacker.
I've got a conference call tonight. Not sure exactly when but I'll try to jump on at some point.
I'd love to play this with you guys but I only get to play UK evenings so I doubt I'd see you much. Isn't there a mod or built-in multiplayer mode that keeps some kind of battle raging 24/7? Not that I'd expect you to switch to that just for my benefit of course, but it's an idea innit.

Good point. The server is now running a persistent OA Mountain Fighting scenario. I'll run this until folks get board of it.

Yes, just make sure you select the proper channel first. I think it's the "," and "." keys that you use to cycle through the channels.
There's also the option for in-game voice chat but I can't seem to get it to work with my mic.
I'll be in game until about 9pm EST and then probably back on around 10pm EST.
I tried to log into game but the lag made it a slideshow. Then I decided to reconnect and the phone rang. ::) Ill try again after 2130 EST (post bedtime for Stagger 2.0 and 3.0).
Had some fun with SDR, DV8 and Staggerwing Sunday. I hope we can get some more games in with more people and perhaps get the voice chat on the server working.

I finally got everything installed last night so hopefully I'll get a chance to hop on the server this evening.
I'll turn on the voice in ARMA and we can maybe try it tonight.

It just doesn't bloody work. DV8, no, I haven't logged in before. I'm definitely entering the correct info - it even says Grogheads Arma 2 on the server list. But every single time, connecting failed. Not much of an error message is it?

I'm glad its a easy fix...
Well I got in and had a quick look around. Got killed a few times. I kept getting dumped to my desktop with an irritating "out of memory" message from Windows, despite my little sidebar widget saying I was only using around 66% of my RAM. :(

Have fun session tonight with DV8 and SDR. Although I think I might have annoyed them when I kept destroying the planes and helicopters in the armory. ::)
What's the point of having an armory full of weapons if you can't plow stuff up with them?

A view from out multiplayer session last night with DV8, SDR and myself. You can see evidence of the intense battle being waged for the airfield. I am making my way to the top of the hill on the left of the shot overlooking the airfield. From there I am going to ruin some bad guys day with my trust rifle. ;D
That was a tough battle. In the end we lost but it was a great challenge.
Notice the DV8 was killed at the bottom left. So sad :'(
We didn't lose that one! We were actually turning it around and had retaken the airfield near the end. It was the one in the desert with all the T-72s where we got spanked. I think I was killed 8 times in as many minutes on that one.
Has the 1.62 patch been released for Steam yet? I installed it on my GG version last night. It adds lots of new GFX options and looks great!

How much does something like that cost? I remember running a teamspeak server back about 8 years ago and it was pretty cheap, maybe $15/month. I imagine this kind of thing would be more.
The server costs are based on several factors Stagger. Namely the game, number of player slots, length of time for server and voice chat options. I was trying to drum up support for a groghead server through the Steam group awhile back. I think it is still something that could easily be done through a paypal account where members could contribute to keep the server up and running. It could also be a revolving server. So for a few months it's ARMA 2 and then perhaps switches to TF2 or whatever hot new or old title the paying members wanted to transfer too. Most server hosting sites allow a game transfer for a nominal fee plus the balance difference for game rental.
The cost of the server depends on the number of slots and the game. ARMA tends to be high than most games. Maybe it required more bandwidth?
It costs $30 a month for 10 slots.
I like the idea of a rotating server. Keeps things fresh.
The Paypal idea is a good one. Contribute some cash and get a password. :)

That was on the grounds of the idea we were discussing a few months ago, but think we were more along the lines of public with reserved slots. I think the thought was perhaps a public server would lure a few unexpecting chumps to the shark tank here at grogheads building up the community through another venue. The reserved slot would do the same thing basically. Pay a few bucks over the course of a year and have a slot held for you anytime you logged in.
I wouldn't mind throwing a few bucks at a server. I would be interested to see what they guys running this joint have to say about it as well. :)
I'd be happy with the PayPal idea as well. DV8 and I discussed it briefly while we were playing a few weeks back.
BTW. There's a new expansion out for ArmA II. It's the Army of the Czech Republic. Campaign of 15 new missions, 2 new maps, bunch of new weapons, vehicles, and uniforms.
It's out at the BIS store now. Won't get to Steam of Gamersgate for a couple more weeks. You can pre-order it at Gamersgate though.
