As you know, I've written many game reviews over the last 20 years. I don't regret it. What I do regret is not getting good at some I really like such as Dangerous Waters, EU II, Making History, Dawn of War, Combat Mission..the list grows with each thought. Therefore, unless it hits an undiscovered period like the Wars of German and Italian Unification, I'm going to concentrate on the old good games instead of opening up new chapters.

I admire your resolve Jim! I am weak...oh so weak!
Let's see how long this lasts. Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai releases next month and it isn't that much of a stretch to see an eventual mod for it on 1860s Italy or Germany!
I can't ever make promises like this, I break and impulse buy way too often in order for anyone to believe me anyway:)
Shogun 2 is fine but not a period that pushes my button. As a matter of fact, the whole TW series is nice bargain bin stuff for me - fun but not enough to buy first day. I admit if Western Civ comes out with something, I'll be very tempted.
The next Shogun installment takes place in the 1860s. If modded I can see versions coming out on the unification of Italy and Germany!

Then they better refine their diplomatic and naval models. I'd really like to see WCS do he period or Paradox do a enhanced add-on to Vicky 2.
I'm just starting a campaign of the original Shogun 2 now and I can say that both the naval and diplomatic pieces of the game are much better than anything CA have done in the last 5 years.
Take that ;)
I'll take another look. I'm open-minded.
Just wait til the next installment comes out. The combined better AI, better naval model, era and setting will really turn you on I think! SEXYTIME!
OK, I just bought Shogun 2 but that doesn't count 'cuz Gus kinda threw down the gauntlet, implying the engine can be modded to mid-19th century Europe,
Gus, which DLCs make the most difference?
Wow...this even beat my time of caving in :)
Doesn't count, doesn't count, doesn't count!!!

So just to be clear....we are starting now......so you REALLY, REALLY are not going to purchase anymore games....starting NOW! :)
Surely you are going to get Steam and Iron - a dreadnought buff like yourself?
Starting now and I already have S&I.
Don't worry Bis. I've made this decision on many occassions myself only to break it as well.
Case in point purchased over the last week:
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich
Battle Academy Market Garden
Battle Academy Sealion
Star Wars The Old Republic w/ freaking $20 headset so I could chat with my brother while we play.
I'm so very weak.
Yeah, I just don't make pledges like this; I know myself too well! I do always resolve to not buy games unless I have a very strong interest in them (and the price is right), but I'll never resolve to stop purchasing new games entirely.

LOL.
As for me, I started getting back into buying after a short hiatus.
Let it be written, let it be known...I am the man that broke Bismarck himself! Iron chancellor my pale white buttocks.
As far as DLCs, I bought the Ikko Ikki clan pack, the Sengoku Jedai clan pack, the Rise of the Samurai campaign (Gempai War) and got the Hattori clan pack with the limited edition of the game I bought. I did not get the 'blood' pack - I don't think it necessary.
If I misled you on the upcoming stand alone expansion, I apologize...but it will cost you another 30.00 dollars and does not require any other game. But the original Shogun 2 is well worth getting. It may be my favorite TW game. Definitely better than ETW and NTW...IMHO of course.
Gus, no problems.
I'd make Gus re-emburse you for pain and suffering.
I feel your pain, Bismarck. So many times I've tried to take a break from buying...and so many times I've bitterly failed after a short while.
Of course, I usually make it at least a full 24 hours before collapsing. ;D
(Head down, looking at feet) I pre-ordered the new Shogun.
I tried, guys, really.
But I have absolute confidence that tomorrow, you won't buy a new game.
Probably.

Wow....even on a pre-order you have caved...you are surpassing my impulse habits now:)
What did it was the pic on the email ad. I love "The Last Samurai". I had a Tom Cruise moment.

I can't blame you, I'll likely be placing my order soon as well:)
HAHAHA YES!!!! Even I haven't preordered Fall of the Samurai yet! Take that again Bismarck.
Where did you preorder from?
Why wouldn't you just order from Steam since it's required anyway?
There are three different pre-orders with three different clans that come with each.
I'll pick it up from Gamersgate since I have that handy-dandy lifetime 15% off code:)
You be able to buy all three the week it's released anyway. It's the way of the DLC world.
^That's why I am holding out, even though it may be my favorite game ever.
I haven't looked at it yet. What's the deal with the clans? Special units or just a re-skin?
Both, I think. Just the tip of the iceberg with this release though.

Gus,
Do you have a listing of what pre-order specials are available from the various vendors? I couldn't see anything mentioned on Gamersgate so not sure if that means no specials there.
Yeah I just looked on Steam and I think you are correct Gus. I don't get the need to make this a stand alone game however.
Same as Napoleon: Total War. Except more gooder. There is a lot of new late 19th century military tech involved in this game. Which makes me salivate.
Grim.Reaper go here to see the differences in pre-orders: http://www.totalwar.com/shogun2/fots_preorder/
Steam for the free DLC.

Thanks Gus...just having a hard time matching to Gamersgate since none of those version names are used on the Gamersgate site. I am guessing it might be the limited version, but it doesn't say that. Likely won't impact my buying decision, but was more curious than anything.
Well I hope it lives up to your expectations. I still mantain that TW game design is best suited for melee based combat over long range black powder.
^The beauty of that is that there is both in the upcoming title.
Grim.Reaper I got the Limited Edition for the original Shogun and it had an additional clan as well as some MP stuff that I never use...no big whup.
And Bison is right if we can all just hold out everything will be available as DLC in few weeks after release.
Hiten Mitsuryugi Style, Bismarck!
(I look forward to the mods putting characters from Rurouni Kenshin into the game...)
