Title: My Life Sucks - Not Really
Post by: airboy on July 12, 2018, 05:51:49 PM
We had one of those highly irritating things happen.  Our washing machine broke down and will not drain water.  After draining it three times and restarting only on rinse - we had to call a repair service.

The repair service cannot get to us for 5 days.  So no washer until then.

In the big picture, although this is annoying it is a sign of how great our lives are in the developed world.  I have scores of friends with washers/driers who can help.  I have a dozen places in town that I can sit in for half an afternoon and do the laundry.  I have clean water to wash the clothes in.  I don't have to wash by hand.

Annoying - yes.  But in the greater scheme of things it makes you realize how good your life is.

Meh.  Our washer died about a month ago.  We dealt with a couple of stores with poor customer service (the bigger they are, the worse the service).  Then the one we bought (with an impeller instead of agitator) was terrible and kept leaving soap on my wife's dark pants, so we returned that one.  Bottom line is that we just got it sorted out last week, after a month of hassle.

is it just the outflow pump?  Those are actually pretty easy to fix yourself.  The worst part is moving the washer and laying it down so you can get underneath to get the to pump to get it out.

I had to take our apart to get to the pump when my wife volunteered to wash a load of tie-dyed t-shirts for our son's school class and one of the rubber bands got stuck in the outflow pump.

^ To add to the above- if you don't always empty your pockets before washing you can block the 'coin trap' that keeps the pump from self-destructing on pennies.

It doesn't look like anyone got the point of your post.  I can (and do) complain about stuff all the time but in the big scheme of things, I have an 1800 sq ft house to live in, two cars, and a pension.  How many people in my highly developed country can say the same let alone a second or third world country.

Nah, I got it - I was just trying to be helpful beyond that :D

I would claim that the attempts to provide helpful advice were depressing since I have little mechanical aptitude.  But I had resigned myself to paying a repair person to fix the thing.  I did all of the basic things called for in the manual - but I'm not about to take off the plates and start messing with it further.

I also resigned myself years ago to having a wife with better spacial perception than I have and thus better ability to put "assembly required" stuff together.  She also fixes the toilets.  One of my brothers makes stuff for fun (restores old vehicles, does woodworking, fixes everything, and restore/repair almost anything & has designed and built Tiffany lamps).  I don't have that skill set.

I have the math/statistics knack, the finance knack, and the ability to grow most anything outside knack.

I can relate to Airboy's feelings. Lightening struck my house and totally fried my router, telephone line, and..... best friend- the COMPUTER.  :'(  Also messed-up the HDMI connections on my TV/Monitor.  :hide:  After a couple of days of 'why me' and cursing the whole world for hating me, I got over it and realized, like Airboy, damn, I've actually got it pretty good and now I've got the perfect excuse to get a newer, better rig all together. So I'm all better now. But I still run outside when I hear thunder and throw things at the clouds.  >:(

The drain on our washer clogged up and flooded the basement. We called the plumber who installed a sewer clean and then ran a snake through it. His bill was $273.

I've had a string of less-than-good luck lately with repairs and stuff.  Funny how a small leak in my bathroom can cause over $3k in damage.  Funny how a tiny little rock can crack a windshield.  Funny how five days of torrential rain can cause a tree to fall over (yeah, happened to me in March, too, but who's keeping score?).  Funny how a tiny bit of bacteria can put a hole in my tooth.  Meanwhile, I've been doing the job of two people lately and have been completely overwhelmed, but it looks like we're going to hire someone soon, so that's some positive news.  Yeah!   :bd:

I'm not especially handy myself and to make matters worse....my wife's grandfather was a master carpenter who built his home and cabinetry with his own hands and her family is very mechanical in general. End result is my wife will take tools away from me, making little sounds of disgust as she does so  ::)

One of my proudest adult moments was fixing a toilet of ours a few years ago and thus avoiding a 150.00 plumbing bill. I also painted the interior of my whole house myself. So on a scale of handy I rate myself a 4 out of 10. I'm definitely not doing any carpentry or adding wings on to my house, but give me 10 hours and I should be able to install a garage door opener. Ok maybe 11 hours.

Nothing personal to you guys but how do you grow up not being handy? Were your father's not handy as well? Did you never experiment by taking things apart to see how they worked and then put them back together again?

Being handy and all my friends being handy I just never got how any guy could not be....

I hated helping my dad do handy things... he was not a good teacher, nor motivator. I moved out and couldn't afford to buy new things so I fixed what I could (back then it was the library and books on how to fix things). My first big win (hah) was fixing an old electric kettle/coffee pot. My best win was putting a 340 into my 76 Duster that originally had a slant-6 in it.

Learned to frame house and small structures because it paid the bills and put me through university. If I could afford it, I'd have more power tools than BC has board games, my latest acquisition is a belt sander.... by all that is holy those things are a dangerous time saver for large sanding projects. I prepped my fence for painting in 2 hours.... 2 hours!!!  I say dangerous, because they'll take the jean material and skin off your leg real quick if you're stupid. (no not me, my brother).

In this time of you tube videos you can learn to do damn near anything handy. You can do eeeet.

I can do some basic stuff - hang shelves, change engine oil, repair a drawer, install a lightswitch - but the tougher stuff I'm more suited to being an assistant.  I understand enough to be able to help with minimal direction, but I'm not always going to know enough to do the whole project myself from end to end.

Knowing yer limitations is good too. At least attempting to be handy is also good.

Gus, using a power snake to clear yer septic definitely counts as handy!  :bd:

I haven't ever framed a house but I did finish our basement by myself. Next project is tear the on suite bathroom down to the studs and rebuild it they way we want it. I'll be getting someone to do the tile work, because I suck at tile, but will do the rest myself.

My father was an electrician and taught me about wiring a all things electrical. That gave me enough confidence to at least attempt other things. If all else fails I can always hire someone to fix my screw ups.  :D

Among all the other things I've been dealing with, I changed the brake pads on my 17 year old car last Sunday.  It usually only takes me a half hour or so.  When I was done, I took it for a test drive, but one of the brakes was sticking, so I brought it back and jacked it up again.  I discovered that 3 out of 4 of the caliper pins (or whatever they're called) were stuck, so I pounded them out, greased them, and put them back (and now I know what that zerk fitting on the caliper body is for!).  That did the trick, and now my brakes work super great.  I think I've been driving with this problem for a while, but didn't notice it, but now I've got to be careful and brake slowly.

But as I alluded to in my other post, on Tuesday a rock hit my windshield and cracked it.  It was supposed to be fixed today, but there as a mix-up so we'll have to try it again.

Dad was career military, and living most of my life in military housing, there wasn't really any opportunity to learn those handy skills.  You move enough, and you don't tend to hang on to the things that you do when you live in the same house for 20+ years  that you may tear apart and fix.  After a certain point, I really didn't have an interest in learning too much about it.

Like some other here, I can do small projects.  Honestly, my wife has become more handy than me over the last few years i.e. tiling the back splase in the kitchen, hardwood flooring in the upstairs hallway and stairs.

I'm not really handy either but so far I've:

1 ) installed fencing around a yard (cemented posts and all, and it was actually straight!)
2 ) made from scratch, finished, and then wall-mounted bookshelves covering 2 sides of a room
3 ) changed out 3-4 toilets
4 ) rewired outlets and replaced ceiling lamps
5 ) installed several programmable thermostats
6 ) installed a garage door opener for my former MIL (with help from an electrician friend since there was only a single light and switch in the entire garage)
7 ) installed a floating floor (sort of like Pergo) in a family room
8 ) repaired more Powerbooks and iBooks than I can remember, along with a bunch of other electronics, mostly basic repairs.
9 ) built my last 5 PCs (not actually such a big deal theses days but the first one was a complete hail mary pass)
10 ) changed starter motors and installed car radios (I changed one starter motor while the car was broken down by the side of the street in downtown New Haven, near The Green)
11 ) completely restored the piping on a VW Microbus that takes the hot air from the engine blower in the back and sends it to the defroster in the front, needed to pass DMV inspection

And probably many other odds and ends lost to time and the ever increasing fog that is my brain. Most of the time I had little idea of what I was doing, outside of reading Chlymers or Haynes manuals, or later on looking stuff up on the internet. ifixit.com is your really, really good friend...  ;)

I built a fence around my yard.  It was rough carpentry, which matches my skill level.

Speaking of dads -- My dad (with a buddy) completely rebuilt two blown car engines.  He also built a large garage, doing everything except pouring the foundation.  He and my mom bought a run-down house, and he completely replumbed the water and gas lines, and gutted and remodeled the rest of the house.  He probably re-wired the house, too.  Oh yeah, he did all of this while he was active duty in the Navy.

My dad always told me that we can teach ourselves anything by reading a book. Back in the day, he'd go to the library or buy a book at a yard sale.  Now we have youtube.

That's my son.  We got him a mini dirt bike a couple of years ago.  It had a regulator that kept the speed down to about 20 - 25 miles per hour.  This spring, he went searching and found a video on hose to disable the regulator.  Now he can go 35 miles an hour.

I've had to fix a few Mac computers.  I had an iMac that needed a new hard drive.  The design is elegant, but I *never* would have figured out how to take it apart, but sure enough, there was a youtube video that showed me the trick ("do this one simple trick...").

About 20 or 25 years ago I had to fix my washing machine.  The solenoid that opened and closed one of the inlet valves died.  Back in those days, before we had youtube, I called the technical support phone number for Sears.  They wanted to charge me $50 for phone support.  I really didn't want to pay it, but I went ahead and agreed.  It was the best money I spent.  The guy on the phone told me how to easily get to the inside of the machine -- loosen a couple screws, hug the machine, then lift up and walk backwards!  I never would have figured that out!

Trailrunner and 'Wing sound quite handy to me 👍

I didn't use the power snake alone - The Wife and a good family friend helped me for fear of me losing fingers, which was a very good call.

Last weekend my neighbor and I put in a new post and set of mailboxes. With my neighbor's help I used mortar and cement for the first time. That was very cool. The post and boxes are made of aluminum and we did a very good job with the mortar, cement and post...so they aren't going anywhere for a long while.

'Controlled burn' of anything makes you handy if you and no one else died.

My dad used that book to rebuild a 1968 VW square back.

I had a very similar book for my Jeep, which was a 1977 CJ-7.  This photo was from about 1985 in Baja California.

VWs I've owned:
65 Microbus (pop-up front windows, hinged double-side door)
72 Camper bus (the one that needed the defroster ducting redone)
    73 Microbus (factory orange)
75 Beetle (fuel injected, made concurrent to the Superbeetle for the first few years)
    79 Diesel Rabbit
81 Diesel Rabbit (got pancaked between a big stopped Oldsmabuick and a big moving delivery van at an icy traffic light.)
81 Scirocco, last year it was made with the one giant windshield wiper. Really wide wheel base, cornered like a La Mans car)

Nice looking CJ. Those Jeeps were an entirely different animal than the current Wrangler line, which IIRC was designed around the Cherokee chassis and drive train.

^That Jeep is A Man's Jeep.

I thought Sciroccos were made until the late '80s...

...they were!

You were talking about the 1st generation. I also didn't know that they introduced the name to a new car (which looks pretty awesome but not available in the US):

My washer might get fixed on the ninth.

I can paint really well.  I painted as a job during college.

I painted for a few months.  I would dig ditches in the Florida sun before I did that again.

Nice skill to have.

I hate painting so bad that I buy the best quality paint that I can and do it right the first time - so I don't have to do it again for a long long time.

I once had a girlfriend who asked me to help paint her bedroom.  After about 5 minutes she asked me to stop helping (and not for the preferred reason).  Also, I made 3 attempts to work on my own car when I got out of college; they all ended badly.  However, I can build and repair PC's.  But I'm an Electrical Engineer and would be laughed out of the profession if I couldn't.

Growing up in the backwoods of BC kind of forces you to become at least somewhat handy.  Even so, I was considered to be the flailing, spastic, incompetent with tools amongst my friends and not without reason.  Being a left-hander doesn't help matters, especially with things like grinders.  Anyway, my father hated doing such work and would be in a pissy mood whenever he was forced to try to build, install, or repair something.  My mother would send me out to "help" and within 10 minutes I'd be sent to fetch beer, look for a tool that didn't exist or "go bother your sister" so I never learned much from my dad.  I took various shop classes in junior high and high school and I enjoyed wood working and electronics even though my wood projects always came out looking like the Charlie Brown Christmas tree and my electrical ones usually caught fire (I did have a habit of overpowering capacitors to make them explode...)  Didn't care for metal working that much and I got kicked out of auto mechanics in the 1st week when the teacher wandered into the line of fire of the staple gun just as I was unloading on my friend's butt.

I learned bit by bit through various jobs such as land surveying, utility work in a lead refinery, enlisting as a combat engineer, and owning a shitbox car in the middle of nowhere.

I'm think still pretty crap with tools and DIY fix-it stuff but compared to friends who grew up in the city and the millennials we hire as summer co-ops where I work, I'm like freaking Schneider from One Day at a Time.

Just replaced the kitchen faucet in my place this morning.  The old one cracked along the spout arm and was leaking fairly significantly a few days ago.  I informed my Chinese landlady and said I'd just pick a new one up, install it, and take the cost off the rent next month.  Next thing I know, two Chinese handymen are in my place wanting to install a tiny bathroom sink faucet in my kitchen and wouldn't take no for an answer.  (they also thought using teflon tape on the threads was a decadent waste of cash).  I let them get on with it and then just installed a proper one today.  Only sliced myself open on sharp metal edges twice and it's nearly straight!  I'm awesome!!!
