Title: Coldageddon 2024
Post by: JasonPratt on January 08, 2024, 09:49:18 PM
So, West TN here where I live, has started bracing and prepping for -1 degrees next Monday night.

By which I mean Fahrenheit, not Celsius.

Before wind chill.

(Also 4 to 8 projected inches of snow, but that's kind of beside the point.)

P'cola, incidentally, has estimates for 2 degrees below freezing, for a couple of evenings next week. (I have a cousin who lives there with her family, sometimes. Her mom and sister(s) should consider going south for a few days...!)

If it's 33 below freezing in West TN of all places, I shudder to imagine what it will be like anywhere north of me.

.

......

...shudder, I say!

Hm, I thought we had a smiley for this.

Here in Wisconsin, we are expecting 5-10" of snow.  Not too bad.  First real snow of the season.  However, it will be a relatively balmy 33 degrees F.

I remember in Scotland in the 1995 having around -20. No wind though - so it was actually really nice.

Car radiator froze though so we couldn't drive home when we were meant to.

Got a foot of snow a couple of days ago but it is going to get warm and rain here in semi upstate NY today, then next week the temps will drop and we will be getting more snow.

In December we finished rebuilding our driveway with French drains, stone and other defenses from floods as our property got its ass kicked by the severe flooding of the last year.

Doing our best to stop it from happening ever again.

Looked at the forecast this morning to see what had changed, and wow totally different! No snow forecast at all, and the temps would only get down to 24F!

....then I realized I was looking at Pensacola (which I had put in last night to give some information to an aunt whose youngest daughter lives there.)

Switching back over here..... oh, yes it has changed indeed.

Now forecasting -4F on Monday. Before wind chill, which I've heard is aiming for -15F.

Still 4-8 inches snow forecast, although new snow has popped up on Saturday which may or may not be around as a base by Sunday night's snow to fall on.

Make sure your vehicle radiator fluid can handle that cold... a cracked engine block from your coolant freezing is very expensive

Going to be in the teens in Alabama this time next week.

Fortunately my girlfriend's going to be in town that week.  I imagine I'll be able to keep warm.

In central Ohio it's showing low of 3 monday night and 14 on Tuesday.  Only 30% chance of snow.  Strange it's colder south of us.

Updated projections increased to 1F as Monday low, now spreading the superlow back to Sunday as 8F, Tuesday expectations still holding around 6F.

This is interesting, because most of the snow was expected to fall Sunday night, and water vapor releases LUDICROUS amounts of heat energy into the atmosphere when transitioning through liquid into solid form. So I wasn't too surprised that temps were projected for Sunday in the low 20s instead of freaking single digits (or lower)!

However, then I checked snow projections -- and those have dropped by around half, for whatever reason, so the projected release of heat energy has also dropped by around half.

That might mean there will be fewer high clouds Monday, which will let more sunlight through to the surface to convert to heat energy; although by the same token a little less insulation value. Thus the projected low goes up a little but not a lot? (Albedo effect at ground level will be a little less with a few more thin pockets to not-bounce-light-as-much, allowing more a little more conversion to heat energy, especially on roadways. Plus less coverage on things like walls, roofs, trees/shrubs.)

I notice y'all had your quota of tornados this week already down in central.  (I have lots of Dad relatives there, plus one set of Mom relatives, so we were checking on them tonight.)

Whereas the panhandle is heading for the 20s next week. I'd rather be where we're ready to fight freezing better!

(....well, relatively better, this is still West TN after all.)

And, on cue: the exhaust motor in my furnace just went out today.....Looks like it'll be a $500 repair.  The good news is it won't get down to below 20 degrees for a couple of days, so I've got time.

[Addendum: Correction: $597.00 repair.  But at least I have heat now ]

I am not leaving the house here in Memphis on Monday since they are forecasting a little less then an inch of snow and 19 for a high.  Memphis has to have the worst drivers in the US and I can't imagine what they will be like with a little snow on the road.

Plenty of fluffy snow on top of gritty snow this morning for the roads (and aesthetic environmentals), but we definitely didn't get below single digits F, and I'm not sure we even got to low single digits. (Wind chill yes down below 0F, but not ambient.)

So yay! Now if only a significant amount of this will melt off somehow before Thursday drops another inch on top...

How did guys up farther north (and/or west or east) do so far? Or south for that matter? Lots of tornadic storms across the far south this weekend, I gather? (Plus below freezing temps today at the panhandle?)

Low was -10°F yesterday morning, -9°F today.  The high today is 3°F. The good news is the wind wasn't as bad, so I don't think we got the -35°F wind chill they were predicting.   We received about 30 inches of snow over the last five days.  I actually have used my snowblower more the past week than I did all last year.  A couple of very brief (1-2 second) power surges on the first day of the storm.  Pretty much a typical January in Wisconsin.

They might as well.  To avoid damage to the lakes, they use a brine, which doesn't work (and in fairness, salt wouldn't work in these temperatures).  And they refuse to use sand.  So when temperatures drop below 10, you get an "ice slush" on city streets.  Its too cold to evaporate, except very slowly, fills the treads on your tires so they don't shed or channel the stuff, and creates a nice, slippery, semi-fluid barrier between your tires and the road.  You end up fishtailing at 15 mph, and some slight hills in town become difficult to navigate, especially if you get stopped at the red lights placed strategically near the crest of the hill.

With that said, no one in town is complaining, because the Packers beat the Cowboys on Sunday, so the weather is not even a major topic of conversation right now.

Increased Precipitation Across Nation Revealed To Be Cowboys Fans' Tears

U.S. — The source of an unexpected overnight surge in precipitation across the United States has now been discovered, as a team of meteorologists revealed it to be caused by the tears of Dallas Cowboys fans.

The team, which held the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoff bracket, was soundly pummeled at home by the Green Bay Packers last night, causing millions of Cowboys fans throughout the country to weep uncontrollably, combining with the ongoing polar vortex to unleash yet another wave of heavy precipitation.

"'America's Team' is responsible for America's winter storms," said meteorologist Pete Benson. "We've noticed a startling trend over the last few decades. Every January, immediately following the Cowboys' season unceremoniously ending, there is a sudden wave of precipitation across the country. The tears of Cowboys fans would be the most logical explanation. Scientifically speaking, that team really eats it."

Sources at the National Weather Service confirmed reports that the Cowboy's annual failure is the likely cause of the rise in precipitation. "I'm afraid the rumors are true," said Dr. Frederick Von Hammerstein. "The Dallas Cowboys' bizarre tradition of crushing the hopes and dreams of their fans results in an annual barrage of precipitation throughout the nation each winter. Fascinating, but very sad."

At publishing time, scientists were also reportedly working on a theory based around the idea that increased seismic activity each fall may be linked to angry baseball fans flying into simultaneous rages each year when the Los Angeles Dodgers win the NL West division title.

We lost water this morning. The high for the last 60 hours has been 20 deg F, the low 11. I thought we had the weather beat, as it is supposed to be back above freezing tomorrow, but alas, no. Our well, pump and cistern are 100 yards behind the house. Everything works, the ESM, transfer pump, etc., but it just got too cold. Something froze up. I knew it was trouble when the cistern froze over. And now I have a teeny leak in the transfer pump control run. I cranked up the little pumphouse heater and pray nothing busts. Our temps are nothing so severe as in the states north of us, but our little systems are not designed for prolonged freezing and my customizations proved inadequate this time.  No water = no pasta, no rice, no coffee, no flushing.

Sorry to hear about your water problem.  FWIW, You can drain the water in your hot water heater for 30-60 gal. worth of water to tide you over for cooking/cleaning/drinking purposes

Fortunately, it was still 4F this morning.

Unfortunately, there was a breeze. -7F wind chill.

Fortunately, I don't have to go to work until 11ish.

Unfortunately, more snow and ice and freezing rain tomorrow.

Fortunately, the current forecast says there shouldn't be more than 1 inch of ice and freezing rain.

Unfortunately..... wait, what!?
