Currently running Windows XP, Core 2 Duo CPU, 4 gb Ram.  Considering upgrading to a different desktop with the x58 chipset, i7-920 CPU, 6gb Ram.

How much of a performance increase should one expect with the 1st generation i7 Processor computer?

For a little over $200, you can get the i5 2500 which is the second generation processor of that type. Still a quad core, running at 3.3 GHz. For maybe $20 more than than you can get the i7-2600 at 3.4 GHz.

I can't imagine that an older i7 920 is that much cheaper to make it worthwhile.
