it was never the mb that died.

The logic goes that the CPU is a very high quality part (very low defectives). If 2 die something is killing them. What is controlling the power to the CPU?

a brand new gold certified Corsair RM650 watt psu.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/corsair_rm_650_watt_gold_psu_review.html

QuoteOverall the RM series power supplies seem to be of nice build quality with good aesthetics and features. Now combined with the gold factor -- the Gold certified model at 90% efficiency at 50% load -- the PSU seems to be a winner. Our tests show that the PSU positions itself where it needs to be be and this. But lets round things up. The PSU is very efficient, has good looks, is modular, is very stable, comes with sleeved cabling and then we have to acknowledge it's seriously silent as well. So it's all good really. With a good size of 150mm x 86mm x 160mm it will install easily in almost any PC. The 119 USD MSRP we feel is fair, it is an MSRP meaning retail and e-tail prices always are lower. The 5 year warranty that you receive with this product IMHO does make up for the few tenners extra in price premium. There's very little else to say other than confirming that the RM 650 is simply a rock solid product that will be recommended by a whole lot of tech media. Nice job Corsair.

I need more power.
looking at tests under full load the cpu and gpu can use up to 660 watts all by themselves.

this was something that I looked into beforehand but how I asked the question got me far different results.

the bios that covers power regulation on this board is simply insane.
it is a real overclockers board to its core.
I think the chip was trying to draw more then it could but the power wasnt there and the calculations were.
a 'soft' fry if you will.

If it was under-powered the CPU might still be alive. Is there a bigger PSU at the store?

On second thought I don't want to recommend adding more power in case the mobo was faulty. I will remain blameless. Hope you get it going.

its going now with some stuff stepped back.
it crushes the graphic game but it's not getting the power to do so.
at the very least I've replaced everything else but the gpu.

sorry to hear it's been a pain.  I hope you get to enjoy the end product soon.

corsair 650 swapped out for a corsair 750.

no.  my gut tells me the MB isnt the problem.  I've been playing WoT all day and the temps haven't gone over 120 F with the stock cooler.  I think that between the bios flash and higher capacity PSU the problems should go away.  I'll continue to stress test it and see what fails if anything.

so far so good.  Im pretty sure the bios flash has a lot to do with it with this mb.  the highest temp Ive seen is 116 F after 3 straight hours of WoT at full blast.  the last 2 both failed at 5 days so I wait and watch.
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

it was never the mb that died.

If the motherboard died, it would never have come back.
It sounds like a conflict with something in start up! Don't know what else you have besides a video card but, try with a minimum start up.
Check the voltages when in bios, right them down, then add the other components and check them again.

Some CPU's, memory, and motherboards can be very very sensitive to higher or lower 5v voltages.

What's the wattage on the PSU? What's you power budget?
That's one thing I learned working for IBM, always get much bigger PSU than you'll ever need (better power = higher reliability & longer life)!
