While reading the Rise of Flight manual, I had a look in the section on military awards. In particular, at the Victoria Cross. It had a reference to the three men who had one the award twice (with "bar").

I thought I would look further, and looked up Charles Upham on the internet. Crikey. If they made a film of it you would scoff at Hollywood being so overstated and unrealistic. It is a quite extraordinary story:

It is difficult to pick out one item...his exploits are so exceptional. My mind truly boggled. Well worth a read IMHO.

He was a very humble bloke too, I met him in the early nineties and he hated all the hoop-la. He always looked grumpy but could spin a good yarn. There's a biography about him called Mark of the Lion by Kenneth Sandford. It's very well written.
Gen. Montgomery: "Your men don't salute much."
Gen. Freyberg: "Well, if you wave at them they'll usually wave back."
