With the strong US ties to the Phillipines, it is most likely the US would get involved in their defense.

The Philippines toned down the US relationship with them about two decades ago. They booted the US off of two rather prime spots for both navy and air force activity.

They might be reconsidering that action but it isn't clear that they are.

I recall us withdrawing from the PI after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption and the main issue being lease terms. I don't recall it being a particularly bad or hostile breakup.

It wasn't hostile, but it wasn't good. IIRC PI has one of the best harbors in the Pacific. I'm sure it is missed.

"Moreover, Beijing claims that the reclaimed features give rise to a 12-nautical-mile band of territorial water. The claim is inconsistent with international law and Beijing’s obligations under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, which it has ratified."

A thumbnail article on the situation along with a telling map of what China's trying to accomplish:

^Wow, just wow.  I don't see how China can claim waters that severely restrict Brunei and Malaysia's waters.  That's just nutty.  But you have to admit that they are very shrewd in their calculations and gradual increase in boldness.  We're witnessing Sun Tzu in action as written by the race that created that masterpiece in the first place.

I really don't see the west doing anything about this.  My perception is that this tide cannot be reversed.  But when I think about ways that we can strike back other than military force I've got ideas.  Since the money that China makes off of us in the trade deficit is obviously going into stuff like this we should abruptly stop importing.  Stop that cash flow and you slow down their plans.

The other plan is get a bunch of nations to legally dispute this action in the U.N. since obviously what they are doing is illegal yet no one has the balls to stop them.

The problem is every single country in that region seems to have some ridiculous claim to something, stretching back a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.

I think diplomats and weapons systems manufacturers will be busy the next few decades in the area of the South China Sea.  Lock and load, good as time as any to start refurbishing the navies.

You're absolutely correct mirth.  I just don't think though that the guys at the top these days think there is any problem.  Or they just don't want to get involved because the days of the cold war are over so what's the point?  I bet that is what they think to themselves.

I would bet that a big factor in why these countries have not allied together, is that China is probably their big trading partner. They are looking at their economies.

A lot of truth in that. We're none to eager to see the Chinese start dumping T-bills.

It's tricky to talk Geo-politics when women of questionable morals are buying you Margaritas that are mostly Tequila.

Stay focused. This is good conversation here. Women of questionable morals are a one-way ticket to a discussion of the Kardashians.

We have serious business to discuss here. Like boobs.
