I'm making the jump from XP. How well does Win 7 handle old games? Thanks.

They only game I've found that doesn't work on 64-bit Win7 is my CD version of Rome: Total War. Nt sure if the steam version works or not. But the rest of my library runs fine.
PanzersEast: Have to think to myself.... will I play the first one by the Winter Sale?  Probably not, then I should remove Dragonfall
PanzersEast: but that is thinking too logically.... and Steam Sales are about ignoring Logic

Be aware that you must get the higher version of 7 to get the XP compatibility layer. Basically a free copy of XP that runs in 7.

I'm happy with 8 so far.

There are some older games that are effected like MTW, but for the most part I've had no issues with Win7.  I love it so much that I made sure to order my new rig before Win8 was the standard install.

Running games that predate Vista may or may not run on Win 7, nor is installing Virtual Box on Win 7 Professional any guarantee they will run, it only improves the odds.

Alas, the question is moot as my moboard can't handle visualization and I can't afford a new one at the moment.

Actually, your PC needs to be able to support Intel Virtualization Technology for XP Mode.  If you run into some older games that won't run on Windows 7, don't give up just yet, there are other virtual PC programs that may work for you.  You might want to give one of these a try.

Since I use Windows 7 Pro (comes w/XP Mode) its been a while since I needed to use VirtualBox/VirtualPC, but VB or VPC2007 may work.

Lots of older games wont run in Win 7 64bit.

If you have the C&C series tiberian sun, Red Alert 2 wont run. RA1 will with funky colors. You have to switch vid from 32bit color to 16bit.

Get something like partition magic. Have XP on one partition and Win 7 64 on another.

Starting with Win 8. All computors that are pre-loaded with Win 8 will require Secure Boot. That means you will not be able to partition your hard drive with a second os or replace your os with a different os without a key from Microsoft.
This is a firmware restriction. You can learn more  at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_restrictions

If true they're starting to learn bad habits from Apple.

99% of PC buyers won't notice a thing. Only those that play around with Linux will be effected for the most part. People that want XP or Vista or 7 along with their 8 can always build their own or have a local shop build it.

I'm pretty sure secure boot is only for Tablets running Windows 8.

I'm running Windows 8 Pro and can dual boot/etc.
