I knew a big announcement was coming. Let's hope we won't have too long to wait.

Hmm.  New module for SF2/Black Sea?  Or a new game altogether?  Maybe Combat Mission: 1984 with a cameo by Gal Gadot?   :D

Classic BFC. After a long period of dormancy they finally announce pre-orders on the long-promised Eastern Front module and then without actually releasing anything they throw out this random teaser into the ether with stuff completely out of left field.

Like, just tell us what you're working on and when we might expect to have it. That's really all people want to know.

Having just sent in my money for the East Front module preorder, this really just says to me that module was never the priority.

The smart play would have been to release Fire and Rubble first, IMO.

Unless this is just a distraction around another delay to Fire and Rubble.

1985 central front. That would be a dream.

Looks like cluster munitions in the picture. DIPCM - from later posts this is definitely CM Cold war.

Still not to get too excited - it'll be 2 years at least before we see anything. Unless this is a partnership with Matrix and they have extra resources to throw at it.

Apparently it is 1979-1982 around and including the Fulda Gap.

It says US, but I hope we can rummage around in Leopards at least with the first module.

Instant buy for me.

1985 central front. That would be a dream.

It opens the door to a lot of possibilities - especially once the West Germans, Canadian, Brits and French are included. Which we all know will be spread out over a couple of modules. Would also be nice to see East Germans, Czechs, Poles and whomever else is in the lineup in the east.

Would be fun to see the Operation Flashpoint islands done in CM form - I doubt BFC could do it without running into IP problems, but I am sure there are bright boys in the community thinking about it as we speak.

The Canadian Army had a training manual which was more novel than training guide, with distinct scenarios that would be a perfect source for Canadian content. Unless BFC has really missed the boat, they're probably looking at that as well.

Lots of potential content, but the stuff that people really want to see - Team Yankee, etc. - probably belongs to someone else as far as IP goes.

It's a well-put together video, but the use of 1980s VCR technology is kind of a hilarious reminder of CM's aging graphics....

Though now that I think of it, could be interesting to see M-1 Tank Platoon scenarios rendered in CM.  At least that way the graphics are a step up....

Definitely. It's funny, despite being a fictional setting, there is a ton of content already out there which scenario designers can draw on for inspiration.

I still rate M-1 Tank Platoon's campaign system as one of the most fun I've ever played, and it didn't even have a strategic map the way Close Combat did.

CMCW also has a campaign and scenarios set at the NTC.  Very, very cool.  This title is probably my favorite out of all the CM titles.  With all the brush wars etc. and the CM modding community the possibilities for this title are very exciting.

This does look pretty cool.  The option of '79 vs '82 is cool too, will make for some interesting engagements.  I wonder how long it'll take until it's in our hands.

Very cool and totally unexpected.
I hope Engine 5 will give the series a graphical touch up, however. It's beginning to show its age rather glaringly.
I don't feel flashy graphics are what's needed, just higher detailed textures, more detailed terrain mesh and improved 3D models.

That would certainly be nice. I have no idea what they have in store for Engine 5. A graphical touch-up, or maybe just a few new animations and higher res ground textures would go a long way to giving the games a nice facelift. We can certainly hope.

I don't know whether combat missions maps would be large enough to suspend my disbelief in cold war scenarios. I guess I am just used to games like wargame: red dragon, I know it's not a proper wargame but it has just about as many stats and realistic features as we all wanted back in the 90s. Armored Brigade and those sort of games. The maps are huge and you feel like the size of the engagements that the fulda gap would probably have.

Some things I would love updated:

- Trenches that are below ground
- Briefing screens that adjust according to your screen resolution
- Curved surfaces such as properly cornered roads
- Co-op or at least more than two player multiplayer. (I know about the work arounds)
- Do Helicopters and aircraft appear on map now when called? Are the maps still too small for this?
- Will it be on steam off the bat?

Number one on my list would be the ability to place water at different elevations.

The campaigns in the game really give you a sense of scale and maneuver, at least to me. And by maneuver I mean tactical maneuver, not road marching for 25km before hitting the line of departure. I understand the knife fight in a phonebooth opinion with the modern CM titles, but I do think that this title does a good job of alleviating that to a great degree. A lot of the battles are pretty large.

It will be on Steam off the bat upon release.

It's a combat mission game, so my expectations are already low.

A map that is bigger than the max effective range of an M829 round would be a great start.

DPICM/cluster munitions for artillery and aircraft respectively comes to mind. Its been a requested feature for a long time and I'm glad we are finally getting it.

There are a bunch of new vehicles unique to Combat Mission, such as the M60 series, the T-64 series and the T-80 series tanks, plus some new variants of the M113. There is also the M48 Chaparral which is cool.

As others have mentioned, it takes place in the Cold War, 1979-1982 which is also unique, but can be understandably underwhelming for someone not interested in that time period. I personally am extremely interested in the time period, and I also really like Combat Mission, so I am a bit biased.

That said, I definitely get your complaints. I share them to a degree as well. I wish we could have essentially double the map size (and double the optimization to boot) as well as a few other quality of life improvements to reduce the admin burden on the player. The biggest thing I am hoping for is an optimization improvement. They have announced that there will be an engine 5 upgrade. No details on that yet, but I really hope at least part of it includes optimization.

This still hurts my eyes after over 10yrs... I am still using a 1080 screen as well. My previous of a different wider resolution died and to keep my FPS up in high end games I kept the same res. I should go up to a 1440 res monitor but I think that would make the text even smaller.

I understand the comment - but I remember reading somewhere that research by the US army after WWII found the actual average opening engagement range in NWE was about 600 yards - Even the shermans 75 had a range of over 2,300 yds. Estimates that - given line of sight and terrain - it wouldn't have been much different in any cold war engagement - especially given things were a lot more built up. Bigger maps be nice - but short of being in the desert - not sure theoretical ranges play too badly against what CM is trying to simulate. Still - bigger anything is better.

Not sure you can stand in a lot of places in germany in 1985 and fire at something 2-3 miles away in a straight line wihthout something getting in the way.

It's not about engagement ranges - its about maneuver space.

There's nothing more frustrating than playing CMSF or CMBS and being IMMEDIATELY engaged with direct and indirect weapons. Your first move was doomed to fail and you've already blundered by making contact with the enemy. The player gets punished.

BUT, the National Training Center is as flat desert-like terrain that you will ever see. Lines of sight for 20+ miles in some areas. How is CMCW going to depict that with its current engine limitations? The entire combat center also revolves around a massive mountain (Tiefort Mountain). It should be interesting to see how the dev's pull that one off.

Do you mean aside from the completely new setting and a TO&E for 1979-82?

Yes. Is there anything innovative with this release?

There were defense terrain surveys done in Germany that found that the average sightline was not more than 1500m. This is mostly due to the nature of the terrain (terrain dictates) with the rolling hills and forests present in Germany and the rest of Western Europe.

Apocalype does bring up a good point though, and posted some great pictures as well! Again, we are in agreement here. I am really hoping that we continue to see larger maps possible in the CMx2 engine. There is hope for this. When CMSF1 first came out I think the max map size was something like 1.5x1.5km. The current engine supports maps that can be more than twice as large now. I really do hope that we continue to see the maximum map size increase.
Concerning the NTC terrain, I can say that the guy developing the maps and campaign is a prior serviceman who spent a fair bit of time at the NTC. A lot of love has gone into his maps and scenarios. He has picked terrain that certainly allows for very interesting and tense tactical actions, even given CMs map size limitations. I think anyone who has been to NTC will recognize some of the terrain right away, and those that have not been will quickly learn why OPFOR has the reputation it does.

Whether you are talking about map size in regards to engagement or maneuver, you must remember that a person's computer has to be able to comfortably manage the system requirements.

Not everyone has a computer capable of handling large maps with the all the troops and terrain at a quality where the game would be enjoyable.

Battlefront is a business and I presume they craft the requirements in as much of a balance as is possible to ensure reaching as large an interested market as possible.

As I recall, originally the game was advertised as best played at Company level.

Yeah - and I think this is partly the point. Company level and 16KM squared seems room for manoeuvre at that scale - try to put a battalion in there and yes the maps are a limit - guess that is down to scenario makers. In any event - not saying it wouldn't be good to have much larger maps - just saying in Germany I dont think it makes a difference given the right force size. Not much interested in the NTC stuff myself.

Not sure if the maps limit is a hardcoded one on one they have set to stop people trying. Seems a desert or terrain like NTC would have much less requirements given the sparseness of terrain - so could be done with those. Not sure the coding that good to allow memory measurement.

QuoteAs I recall, originally the game was advertised as best played at Company level.

And what is the typical size of an armored company area of operations?

Hint - Bigger than a Combat Mission map can run within reason (without a super computer).

To caveat your statement - the game was designed WW2 combat, focused on light infantry engagements with some armor support.

So bearing in mind the difficulty of keeping the game in the realm of possibility for a reasonable spectrum of customers with different computer specs, what do you suggest?

I also wonder how manageable and enjoyable CM would become with much larger maps.  As Apocalypse points out, the game-system started out as a way of depicting WW2 tactical encounters.  I think it does a great job at that, but maybe getting more modern is pushing its envelope too far.

Battlefront obviously have to keep developing and selling new products, and going forward in time seems logical, but will it necessarily make for a good gaming experience?

Someone above joked (?) about a WW1 game, and I think there is scope for a tactical treatment of early WW1 stuff and also even the later trench fighting.

Can a WW1-themed scenario be created in any of the current CM modules? It's been so long since I played my copy of CM:BfN I can't remember how customizable the unit load outs were. I don't even know if I have the install file anymore since I've changed my computer since last I played.

If the editor allows simulating trenches (maybe by raising the terrain on either side?) and there are options for barbwire and lots of shell holes you could do an 'over the top' scenario using only troops w/ bolt action rifles. The only issue would be how to decrease the ROF of the WW2 MGs to simulate the ones of WW1 types such as the Maxim.

The original terrain editor w/ CB:AK was good enough for making steep, hilly maps so maybe CM2 might allow for creating scenarios, set in Italy and even the Balkans along the Adriatic, such as depicting Rommel's WW1 exploits as a unit commander in the Alpenkorps.

Visually I think that still won't work - you can place trench objects, but the models are only 2d.  Using the editor to "dig" a 3d trench would mean that such a feature is a tile's width (40m?) wide I think.

I use a 3440 x 1440 monitor and CM looks great on it. I don't have a problem reading the text................but I do have glasses.

A small part in the center. The text is about the same size as you might see in a phone text message. It is easy for me to read, but as I have said I wear glasses and I know that helps.

Although in today's modern games they should auto adjust for different screen resolutions and provide in-game UI scaling options, you can change the Windows setting to scale your display (i.e. 150% etc.) and the game/text will more fill the screen.  Again, you shouldn't have to do it and requires extra step but at least helps for now.

It seems BFC is still planning on releasing Combat Mission Cold War in April.  However the Slitherine /Steam release will be delayed until June in order to add multiplayer support.  Steve at the BFC forum posted about the multiplayer support. Below is part of what he posted.

We are jointly publishing Cold War with Slitherine.  Until the Slitherine launches there is no Steam version and Slitherine isn't planning on launching until June.

So why is Cold War going to take a few more months to come out for Slitherine?  Because they asked us to put in some multiplayer support that no Combat Mission has (so far).  And it needs to be extensively tested.  Which is why an otherwise nearly complete Combat Mission game with traditional features isn't being released by Slitherine sooner.

In the same thread Steve implied other CM titles that have and/or will be released on Slitherine / Steam will also get this same multiplayer support.   :)

I have not used Slitherine /Steam multi-player so I'm not sure how it works.  I suspect for CM it would handle the turns between two players.  Multiple players per side just sounds to good to be true.

So what are we talking about in terms of time?  F&R = days, Cold War = a week, maybe two.

Those are the best estimates I can give at this point.  More exact than that is only possible after we've put the URLs into the store.

So Combat Mission Red Thunder module Fire & Rubble may be out in days.

Combat Mission Cold War game family may be out in a week or two.

I'm already wondering what might be a first module for CMCW.  :)

The definition of several is more than 2 but less than many. So if you settle on 3 for several, and of course there is your own hat, that is 4 eats to be eaten.

I am unsure which wine goes with hats, but I would recommend at least one bottle per hat.

Yes it's an M-60 Patton on the MGB.  There are seven versions of the M-60, an M48A5 Patton and a 105mm Abrams.  Below are some screenshots of the Cold War US tanks in NTC terrain.  Back row are three of the M60s.  Front row is M48 and M1.  I hope a future module brings in the M551 Sheridan and others.

I just reread Red Storm Rising a few months ago.  Man, was that a fun read, even if Clancy's technology usually worked a bit more reliably than IRL!

Did we ever figure out how effective TOWs or Apaches were against T72s?  Or whether the M1A1's stabilization technology really put it in a different class than anything the Russians could field in terms of shooting on the move?

I remember a ton of weapons systems that all looked good on paper but never ended up being deployed in combat until 1991, against an undertrained and overbombed Iraqi army that melted like butter in the desert.  After all these years, I can't even remember when the Bradleys finally replaced the M113s, when the F16s replaced the F4s, when the Leopards rolled out en masse, or when the M1A1 got its teething problems worked out.

So what is the status of CM Cold War?  I look at the Battlefront page and it is apparently still in beta...with PBEM coming with the full release. The web page mentions July 21 (it is now October 21), so wondering...is it finished? or still waiting that final patch?

The game has been fully released for a while, but Battlefront are absolutely atrocious at updating their website and keeping their communications consistent.

That July thing is the patch with PBEM++. That patch is heavily delayed. The currently released version works just fine, with normal PBEM.

I do remember, by 1990s, the Danes had at least one tank.  I saw it on a railroad siding once!

I wonder if they tested all this after the curtain came down and they got access to some Ruskintech. Even the Iraqi tanks were only export versions iirc.

There is a discount right now for the 3 modern CM games, on Steam.

Note that the Steam version doesn't work on Win11 right now.

Gus, if you have never played CM before, you many want to consider starting off with one of the WWII CM titles.  My reason for this suggestion are as follows:
1) IMHO, CM map sizes work best with WWII-era weapon ranges.  I believe the modern games have too little space for the modern systems. (having said that, I'll be buying CM Cold War.  Its just I wouldn't recommend it for a first-time CM player)
2) There are more WWII scenarios available

Yes, they go on sale on Steam, and during Matrix sales (which come with Steam keys).  Given the Steam release is new, I would not expect much, if any, discount this year.  However, the days of having to pay full price for Battlefront games, even if they were released a decade ago, are hopefully ending.  (Yes, I know Cold War is not that old, but anyone familiar with Battlefront knows what I am talking about.)

Definitely do not start with Black Sea. The hardware in that game is brutal and if you are unfamiliar with how CM works it will be a senseless endeavor in frustration.

I'll echo Tripoli's advise to start with WW2. Or, if you want modern stuff, go with CW or SF2.

I've played all the WWII CM games all the way back to the demo for CMBO. When Shockforce came out I tried out the demo and was baffled by the newer weapon systems. CM Has always been a system that doesn't have Hit Points that fill-up before something is destroyed or some other way of scoring kills. In these games, if it sees you, it can probably kill you, or disable, rout, suppress, or damage with one hit.

If a Russian 45mm AT Gun could kill my Panzer 3's from 600 meters in 1941, you can imagine what the weapons of 1970-80 can do. I agree with others here, start with something less lethal to try to manage first.  But other than the price, this game does look very, 'Loin-Moistening'.

IMO all the Combat Mission games are good and come with an editor.  Given the choice between CM Black Sea and CM Cold War my personal bias would be for CM Cold War.  In CM Cold War you will see the technology evolving from late WW2.  You can command a US force composed of M48 tanks and M113 APCs in one scenario or M1 Abrams and M2 Bradleys in another scenario.  The Soviet Motorized Rifle Battalions (MRB) can have BTRs or BMPs.  In the CMCW base game timeframe, 1979 to 1982, the technology between NATO and the Warsaw Pact is competitive.  CMCW also tends to have big maps with many of the stock scenarios.

If you have both on Steam, you should have the discount on Steam.  Go to the actual Cold War store page.  The game itself will show full price.  Right below it should be a "Combat Mission Collection" which includes all three CM games that have been released on Steam with a 20% discount.  If you already have the other two, this leaves Cold War at 20% off.  This is on the US page... I don't know if the bundle discount is offered in other countries.

My understanding is that Cold War strikes a nice balance between the modern titles and the WWII titles.  The combat and weapons systems portrayed are not quite as hyper precise and ultra deadly as Black Sea, but it's also not quite as fiddly and archaic as the weapons systems portrayed in the WWII titles.  That said I bought the game a while ago and only just now installed it through Steam so I have yet to give it a go.

Title: Re: Combat Mission: Cold War

You'll probably dig CM:CW then, you can do custom battles where you spend points to build a force out of companies/platoons/squads, vehicles, specialist teams, air/arty support, and so on.  You can spend a ton of time fiddling with their positioning and orders, but the UI is very clean and easy to learn.  There's a good bit of micro, but you can choose to play WEGO turn-based which mitigates that quite a bit.  I would strongly recommend it based on my experience with the previous titles.

Also, I just fired up a battle and am awe-struck at the size of a Medium map.  It's at least as big as the largest maps in the previous titles.
Title: Re: Combat Mission: Cold War
Post by: IICptMillerII on November 17, 2021, 09:19:17 PM
Gus, I would highly recommend Cold War. Not that I am biased at all...

Anyways, the reason is that Cold War, in my opinion, hits all of the best parts of the CM engine. It features maps that are large enough to maneuver given the weapon ranges and lethality. This was a conscious design decision we went with. The US, NTC, and Soviet campaigns all feature large map with realistic forces for the sides and contexts. There are a bunch of scenarios, a lot of which are great as well.

Arguably the best part is the fact that it covers a pivotal period of technology. You can have M48s going up against T-55s, which essentially features WW2 era tank gunnery. And then at the other extreme, you can roll with the original M1 Abrams going up against the T-80B, with modern fire control computers, laser range finders, and exceptional armor. You quite literally get the best of both worlds, and everything in between. Kinda hard to go wrong with it!

Yikes thanks for the guidance.  The older I get the dumber I get.  I was told it was going to be the opposite
but since I hit 70 it's been pretty much downhill.

Anyway since I'm here I'll put my 2 cents into the discussion.  Get the CW game.  If that's the time period you're interested in I'd go for it.  These CM titles are just astonishing as far as I'm concerned.  Nothing else quite like them.

Don't know about hinds as aircrafts are not rendered on the map, but rather act as "off map artillery" unfortunately.

It is quite a bit more. They will find targets without their designated attack zone on their own (as opposed to artillery that falls randomly in the zone).

And AA units (AAA and missiles) fire back and can shoot down aircraft. I can be a nice battle in a battle. If you brought AA equipment. If not you are screwed.

I haven't had a Help Desk ticket from anyone saying they can't run it on Windows 11 or gotten feedback from the Slitherine/Matrix people saying that they are getting reports of it not running.

If anyone seeing this has had a problem running the game on Windows 11 open a Help Desk ticket and we'll figure out what's happening. I suspect the issue is something that doesn't have anything to do with Windows 11. None of my 3 computers can run Windows 11, so I can only go but what my kid sees.
