Title: US WW2 76mm Gun vs. German Armor
Post by: ArizonaTank on August 06, 2020, 04:36:20 PM
Interesting 2018 US Govt. study of the 76mm gun vs. German armor in WW2.  Plenty of math, but also charts where they give you the answers...:)

If you don't want to go through the discussion, go to the chart on page 22.  Big difference between the 75mm and 76mm.

I'm reading Spearhead right now, so your timing is impeccable.

Why the large difference?  Was it the gun or the ammo used in the guns?

I think it had to with velocity. The 76mm had a higher velocity which increased its armor penetrating capability. The 75mm could penetrate 4 to 4.5 inches of armor while the higher velocity of the 76mm permitted penetration of up to 7 inches, important when facing panthers and tigers later in the war.
