Osprey's two-volume Medieval Tactics sheds new light on the role of infantry vs cavalry. Calvery was not as supreme as earlier authors indicate while infantry wasn't an ill-disciplined secondary element. The book also puts paid to Hanson's claims of decisive battles and continuous Western supremacy.

Oh, I love Oman; I've an original of his Art of War in the Middle Ages, the two-volume re-write and all of his Peninsular War. Other historians are not as good.
