  The theory here is that if the Germans had figured out that the Imperial forces were going to escape south from Suda, they could have shoved them to the east instead of doing the six or eight other things they did instead.  I'm also supposing that the bicycle recon forces got ashore with more panache to do the more shoving sooner as needed:

  Okay...11 am...not looking wonderful for Ramke, the mountain troops and the parachute pioneers.  The problem with attacking on a wide front is that when things go wrong here and there, even the slightly less motivated defenders of the New Zealand Division can counterattack and do a lot of damage.  Or to look at it another way, the Germans really might not have had the option of shoving the Imperial forces east, but only of unhinging the Imperial line leaving it up to the defenders to withdraw without completely disintegrating:
