The Flames of War minis are right about that scale. You can find 2" plastic bases to glue them on at any gaming store that sells minis.

The hardest part is finding a chess/checker board that fits the style and size you want.

Knowing you, you could probably make one yourself that's ten times better than anything you could buy.

The only improvement I might add would be to put some kind of label on the bottom of those so you can remember that the grille is the rook, etc.

One on one Soviet equipment would have more parity. But I do like seeing the US forces in the mix.

Another thought might be aircraft, though in the late war the US would certainly dominate. Still, an Me 262 as the queen would be quite cool.

I wouldnt make the board.  Id get that etching done at a glass shop or maybe put together at a marble shop.
