Post by: Rayfer on June 10, 2022, 01:13:07 PM
For those of us who enjoy the WDS/Tiller games, their summer sales is from June 17th through July 4th.  25% off all titles, exclusing any new releases within the past 12 months.

I need to finally pick up one of the Civil War or Napoleonic games...  I wonder if there's any consensus on the best title for versus AI play.

Unfortunately the Tiller/ WDS games are notorious for their poor AI, especially in the bigger scenarios.

There is however a very active MP scene on "The Blitz" forum and also the " Wargaming Society" run a Tiller Ladder and tournaments for all the Tiller/WDS games.

I agree-If you are wanting to play solo, the Tiller games are pretty much a waste of time, as the AI is not very challenging, even for new players.  However, if you want to play MP, they are pretty good.  They are simple, quick and reasonably accurate.  They also have a very wide variety of battles to choose from.  Further, I use them to teach myself some of the history of a battle.  For instance, I will frequently read an article or two about a battle I know little of.  Then, I'll  playing a scenario on the battle in the WDS series.  This gives me a pretty good idea of how the battle was and could have been fought, and gives me a good jumping off point for more in depth research.

+1

Historically the research in the games and orders of battle are usually spot on.

You can also hotseat them.  Might play one side one day and one side the next.  If that isn't fitting your gaming time then start two different scenarios and play one side of each and then flip them the next time you sit down

I've got them all except for two of the Naval Campaigns and the Modern Air Power Middle East.  So I may pick up Guadacanal as I had a lot of fun doing some testing on Kriegsmarine.  Any questions feel free to ask.  They are right though I wouldn't pick them up for playing the AI in the big campaigns but the AI will give you a good fight in the smaller scenarios.  Just got done playing a medium sized scenario in the upcoming Panzer Campaign and the AI did a credible job on the attack, rotated worn troops out and fresh troops in, etc.  Ended up with just a draw and glad to get it.

The strength (or lack of) of the AI doesn't bother me much as I am sure my own ability is worse than the AI itself.  Always has presented me a reasonable challenge.  Lot of different topics to choose from so I'll probably procrastinate for a few days before deciding.

+1 My experience exactly.  I can only conclude that my wargaming intelligence is artificial as well.

I rate my military tactics skills somewhere between a lobotimized circus seal and a civilian cow puncher.

Good one! When guys here post coments like 'WDS/Tiller game AI's are braindead', I cringe, curl up in the corner of the room and suck my thumb in humiliations.

Thank you sir. The support is really, really appreciated. We are seeing players filling out their libraries currently. The reason we are looking to release demos for all twelve of our game series is to allow players to 'try before they buy' in areas that may not have been top of mind. Just as importantly, we are seeing a nice inflow of first time WDS/JTS consumers who are either playing the demos or hearing positive word of mouth as we upgrade the various series.

We only currently have four free demos, so adding another eight can only help. With over 100 tiles currently for sale and another 20+ in development we have been fortunate to have had very solid support from the community  ;)

I hope someone replies to your question.  I don't own any of their naval games and was looking at Wolfpack and/or Guadalcanal...?

I'm a HUGE JTS/WDS fanboy. I won't list all of their titles I own, suffice it to say it's well into the double digits. John Tiller was such a thoughtful and creative war game designer, I would have been happy with his content alone.

Along comes WDS and elevates his/their games to a level that's nearly unsurpassable. Their creativity is next level. Their customer service should be emulated by all gaming outlets. The breadth and width of their titles scratch nearly every gaming itch out there.

Whew!  That felt good getting that off my chest.

Anyway As far as their naval titles go I have Jutland and Midway, two of the most significant naval battles in the last 100 or so years. That said I didn't play them much as it was like looking at little gnats moving around on a bland field of blue. The overall system itself was fine, I just couldn't get past the visuals (or lack thereof). Now with the updates to Wolfpack and the newly released Kriegsmarine I'm about to jump out of my skin I'm so excited! The games finally look like what I'd originally wanted!

I'm taking WDS's advice and I'm going to purchase Guadalcanal at 25% off as they've stated updates to the rest of the naval series is just around the corner!! So I say take the plunge. The games play great and now they look great.

On another note. I just purchased Japan 46 to partner with my copy of Japan 45. If you can find a copy of David Westheimer's fictional account of Operation Olympic - "Lighter than a Feather" to go along with D.M. Giangreco's "Hell to Pay" a non-fictional account of the entirety of Operation Downfall (Ops Olympic & Coronette) you'll have the perfect combination of excellent reading and excellent gaming. I'm particularly interested in this "what if" campaign as my grandfather was a combat infantryman in the "Sightseeing" 6th Infantry Division which was slated to take part in Operation Coronette.

This business model was initiated by John Tiller many years ago...not just a couple of maintenance updates and then dropping support for a game - but regular enhancements to port new features, updated graphics and often completely new scenarios and campaigns to titles, year after year. A purchase of a WDS (John Tiller) game is an investment that will keep paying dividends for years to come!
