Title: Jomni's No Man Sky Diary
Post by: jomni on August 17, 2016, 08:13:40 PM
I think I will start a diary / captian's log sort of thing.  I will write down what I'm up to in the game. But no promises on how detailed it may be. Depends on my mood. And I won't commit to a frequency of update as I don't play this every time.

My primary goal is to add immersion to my gameplay. As well as show you guys what NMS has in store.  It may also prove how varied or boring the experiences are in NMS.  I have come to the conclusion that plant life is repetitive and animals look the same.  The procedurally generated life forms are nothing great and overhyped. You get superficial variations but their core features are essentially the same.

I'm in. But only if you name a planet after me. A big one with lots of those rings around it. Slash-terrium or something like that.

I'll name a pug after you if you don't mind.  I actually haven't seen a planet with rings so far.

OK. The Pug Home World then.  ;D  This one looks like one I should stay away from lest I get lost wandering the Cosmos forever looking for the next great screenshot.

Subscribed!

And perhaps I'll start catching up with how things are going in Fortresscraft...  :))

So here I am in this world I call the "Frosty Hostile Land" in Jomni III System (I claim all the systems I come across).  It's a cold place.  And things are out there to kill me.  The drones here are pretty aggressive and they attack me even when I do nothing.  So I must always keep moving around.  I was attacked by one type of fauna which I call "Rabid Turtle Bunny".  Occasionally, there are storms which uses up the heating energy of my suit so I have to use metals to activate the reserve heating if I'm far from shelter.

I found this ship which has one more slot than my old one so I decided to make this mine.  But I have to repair the parts.  I repaired the Jet Propulsion and the Launch Thruster and Pulse Engine so that my ship is ready to go.  I wanted to fix the Shields and Jump Drive too but I have mined the last Heridium in the vicinity.  Since walking around on foot and gathering resources is very dangerous with all the active droids, I decided to fly my new ship that's not completely repaired.

I stumbled across a comms terminal in an abandoned observatory.  Solving the puzzle, I was informed of a place of interest in some part of this planet.

Flying around, I saw some ships landing in a clearing.  I went to investigate and was delighted to see a trading post.  I couldn't talk to the pilot of the ship for long as those droids will start shooting at me when I keep still so I went indoors.

Inside, I found a better Multitool (Mining and Combat weapon) with a grenade launcher.  So I bought it to replace my standard one.  I also sold loot and bought some resources to fix my ship but it's still not enough.

The trading post was manned by a Vy'keen named Beaushan.  The Vy'keen are a pretty intimidating race of warriors.  So far, the only thing I understand from him is 'interloper'.  I guess he's referring to me.  They're generally friendly though constant interaction.

Walking around, I found a new creature and I call this the "Iron Eating Iguana".  Because it eats iron and it looks like an iguana.

I figured, I really need to get back to the space port to obtain the materials that I need to fix the ship instead of scouring Frosty Hostile Land.  So I took my new ship to space for the first time.

The ship is fixed now and I'm ready to go back to the planet to get some "valuable resource" for trade.

Sorry about the big pictures.  I will try to resize them before uploading next time.

Visiting Frosty Hostile Land is a lucrative endeavour.  These glowing balls are scattered all around the planet.  They are called Gravitino Balls and could fetch around 25,000 to 30,000 Units each when sold in the market.  But each time you pick one up, Elite Sentinels appear and chase you.  But the risks are worth it.  My routine is to land in an area and scout for these balls.  Once I have figured out how many are in the vicinity of the ship. I plan my route and pick up sequence so that I am able to get to my ship quickly once the Sentinels come.

I found plans for some breathing apparatus.   This would be useful in another planet in the system with large bodies of water.  The Gravitino Balls are put to good use.  I was also able to upgrade my jetpack.

With loads of cash due to Gravitino Ball harvesting, I was able to talk to some Vy'keen trader and buy his ship for 700k units.  This left my wallet almost empty so I chose to stick around this planet to earn more cash.  I'll probably leave this planet alone once I get 2 million bucks.  I just hope I don't get tempted into buying another ship.

New fauna was discovered.  I call this the Cruel Ram.  It can be very dangerous carnivore and will attack you when provoked.  Luckily, I haven't done something to provoke it so far.

I bought another upgraded multitool in a Trading Port.  I couldn't figure out how to refill the Plasma Launcer so I'm not too bothered that this new one doesn't have one.  With 10 slots, I could load up more upgrades.  With this new weapon, I was able to actually fight off the droids that spawn when Gravitino Balls are picked up.

Same here. I even tried quoting to extract the actual url of one of the pix and paste it into a new tab. Still no dice. Do you have your storage account set to private by any chance?

Damn Google!  It's not privacy.  Looks like the url gets changed.  What's a better hosting site?

I've been using photobucket.com for a while but I know some folks have other sites they prefer.

I put them on my free DropBox account under Public, then put the public link into the image brackets. Way easy  :)

I'll do photobucket next time.  Or just directly use Steam but can these be resized?
Title: Re: Jomni's No Man Sky Diary

I think the resizing is a forum tool, certainly it's a forum BBCode command (like width=800 inside the brackets with the url command), and so not dependent on the source. I've used the forum resize command occasionally with plenty of sources, though not yet with a Steam source.

Good suggestion.  This one is hosted by Steam resized using the forum code.

Today's update:

New Gun...
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.akamai.steamusercontent.com%2Fugc%2F261594144874165499%2F0E23A016DAD524752C6B87D166CBE6681FC18F82%2F&hash=e81d48345fbabb323f5cdd35540aff3f82d468d2)

New Suit slot and I placed a life support booster module.  Also built and anti radiation module. I'm waisting slots by building tech I don't use in the current planet (respirator and anti-radiation) but I would rather do than than look for resources to build the modules when I really need them.
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.akamai.steamusercontent.com%2Fugc%2F261594144874165045%2FC507F055955EE6F8ABD0C287468BD7E4B3A4A57E%2F&hash=f473f161e2c35d6aa9848acc744942f636296606)

Note: As someone mentioned in the main forums, the game becomes too easy the more a get these upgrades.  The enemies stay the same, so far.  It's not like an RPG where enemies become harder.   Which bring us to the philosophical question:  Why am I doing this grind, what am I supposed to do in this universe?  My current goal is to earn money. But for what purpose? Another ship?  Should I be moving along and explore new worlds and systems instead? Should I go to the centre of the universe that everyone is talking about (though some say it is futile).

Got a bigger gun. :)

I want to install Impact Damage Theta upgrade but I can't seem to find Iridium.  I checked all the traders and trading post but can't seem to source the element in Frosty Hostile Land.
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.akamai.steamusercontent.com%2Fugc%2F254839631180232986%2FC6CED9CA7AD7D5C62C977A9BB54A74F768386486%2F&hash=67fab34cc3103f6272405f42ec78781b04089d4b)

I decided to fly over to Desolate Islands to see if I can get Iridium there.  There's a lot of swimming involved but the planet is pretty uninteresting.

I went to a new planet which I haven't named yet.  It's a pretty hot planet.  But I can't seem to find that Iridium.  Nice landing.

I had this idea of feeding these Turtlebeaks some stuff so that they can poop some other stuff out.  I did get a few Iridium but a lot of other elements I don't need as well.  This is a tedious process.
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.akamai.steamusercontent.com%2Fugc%2F254839631180056617%2FB6CEAD1D9A074DF99FFFF4ADFED436C0CFE242D2%2F&hash=1836777ac4c059878ee015a5eed9c8485113680b)

Also fed these bug-eyed goats to get some random minerals.  But they fill up my stash so fast with some unwanted stuff.
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.akamai.steamusercontent.com%2Fugc%2F254839631180057036%2F35DA49B2C153E2F9ED300CC1C9BC82CA5EBF5209%2F&hash=b054249a4524826ac82030a953eb3ea65239d407)

Ok.  So the planet is still unnamed.  Please reply with your suggestions.

Yep, I can see those!  O0

From my experiments, a width of 1024, seems the largest the pix can get on standard 1080 screen resolutions (nowadays) without being so big that scrolling or a manual resize is required for most people. Maybe the related height of 768 would work similarly...?

Okay, the top image was height=768, and the bottom was width=1024.

Edited to add, height of 768 didn't work so well. I haven't tried ticking up the width resize yet, since I'm sticking with standard imageshack resize options.

Have mine set at height 400 so far. Too small? Clicking the pic would go to normal size.

Some of the font is a little small for my squinty eyes.  :2funny:

That's sometimes true for width=1024, too, but it does seem cleaner for this game's pix.

Of course, right clicking on a posted image and choosing "view image" solves all problems, instantly resizing that image to the monitor.  :crazy2: So a manual resize isn't hard; it's just a little harder to check the image and also read commentary that way.
