OK. I've taken the liberty to create a Steam group. I'll promote the Old Guard to officers within the group. Right now I've left it open as a public group so you all can join without issue. We can change this later if we want too.
We need an avatar. What's the concensus?

I have had my problems with Steam. When Steam works, I barely notice. When it doesn't, it is a huge pain in the @$$. So I respect the Steam Recalcitrants.

Empire Total War. It's the only Steam game I own...and will almost certainly be the last.

Ok joined. I do ETW as well as Shogun2 TW. ;)
I'm in, my Steam name is Number 41
Just joined up. I don't do alot of online game play but that might change now that I have people to play against. That is if my internet connection does not keeping dropping :)
Just a reminder that we do have a Steam group up and running. I plan to start looking at doing some scheduled events around late April when I have time to organize events.
Right now I'm thinking things like L4D2 groups. Perhaps a CIV V game. Things like that. What games with an online mode would you all like to play with other community members?
WH40K. There is an FPS, Space Marine, and also the RTS game. I think we have fans of both.
I personally enjoy playing Team Fortress 2 and could be easily persuaded to jump into a game of that.
I'm open for some MP gaming. Give me a day's notice to install it if needed, and I'm good.
As I've only got three games on Steam, I would say, HOI3: Semper Fi (courtesy of our very own Bison).
Joined up but I only have CiV on Steam.
The only multiplayer games I have on steam right now are CivV and Shogun 2 both of which I've never even tried to play multiplayer with.
I am open to some Left4Dead 2 or Borderlands multiplayer gaming Friday evening.
Space Marine for sure. Maybe some Shogun 2?
Put me down for Dawn of War II, CiV, Shogun 2, and Empire: Total War. Message me in advance for making a play date.
MetalDog and I already have a Friday night gaming session scheduled in which we match wits in Civ IV. We've been very active with that game so if anyone wants to join in on the fun let one of us know. This is a non Steam version though of the game.
Sweet.
I've got some family stuff going on this weekend so don't sit around waiting for me to respond. Next week will hopefully work better.
I just loaded Civ IV and loaded the 1862 scenario to live out my Chinese fantasies. W8, 'Phro, and anyone else...let me know if you're interested.
^Sounds good Gus. Let's see what MetalDog ('Phro) says. Whether he's available or not I would certainly love to start up a game with you.
Btw, I highly, highly, highly recommend the mod called Realism: Invictus - http://www.realism-invictus.com/ (http://www.realism-invictus.com/)
I'd be up for trying a Civ IV game as well. Never played it MP.
Thanks for the mod link W8taminute, I'll try it out tonight if a get a chance..... just need to remember how Civ IV works after so much Civ V lately... :o
Full disclosure - I am a Civ n00b. Before Civ IV the last Civ game I played was Civ II on the original Playstation. W8 can that mod be used in conjunction with others?
I had played a few times with 'Phro last year. We tried to get into Fall from Heaven II. We started playing regularly on weekends but then I lost my job and chaos ensued.
I can typically play most Friday/Saturday nights. I get the vibe that a true MP game with 3+ more guys would be great.

Can ETW be played online in campaign mode? I never was clear as to whether they worked that out.
^I don't think so...not sure.
iirc you can drop into the tactical battles to replace the AI controlled army. I don't believe there is a joint campaign.
^Can you do that in ETW? I didn't think that was available until NTW.
I don't remember. I haven't played ETW in over a year.
Me neither.
It has a multiplayer part and I'm pretty sure that is it.
Or it's a set battle piece that you and an opponent pick sides to battle.

Hi Barthheart, it's good to see you here. I would love to play Civ IV online with you as well. I learned a lot during our Advanced Tactics Gold PBEM's. You're gonna love Realism Invictus, it truly makes the game more realistic but it only works with Beyond the Sword. Gus that might mean you would not be able to experience the mods' awesomeness.
So here is my schedule atm: Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings are spent with MetalDog on Civ IV online. Maybe we can expand our game to include others and make it a great experience. We tend to play for an hour so nothing heavy duty here. We're flexible and accommodating. Saturday evenings would work for me too Gus.
In general I'm free for online play at 9:30PM East Coast Time.

I thought I saw a section in the main menu for multiplayer, but now that I think of it you might be right. Online Campaign mode might not exist for E:TW, just those historic battles scenarios. Let me check that tonight. I do have Napolean Total War though and that does indeed have an online campaign mode.
Sounds good W8. I should be around this Saturday night. Just let me know. I have Civ IV Complete btw...including BTS.

My schedule is normally Mon-Thu 7 EST to 9 EST, but this can be altered with enough notice.
Fri and Sat can usually play later... unless it's a date night then I'm busy all evening. ;)
Good to know Barthheart thanks for the times your available. I'll look for you on Steam, that is of course if your not out carousing!
Gus, I'll look for you on Steam Saturday night around 9:30. Let me just double check with my commanding officer (aka The WifeTM) to make sure she hasn't planned any last minute activities. LOL
Realism Invictus will work great with Civ IV Complete!
Downloading it now and the manual. Is it mod foldered? Do I have to disable other mods?
I am VERY much interested in a Civ IV MP with you fellows. Friday is better than Saturday for right now. Once the girlfriend and I get into a routine, Saturday nights will free up. On a related note, I'm going to introduce her to Civ. I'm HOPING she'll dig it and we can add another player, but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't think you have to disable other mods but keep that in mind if you have trouble running Invictus. As a side note, this is the only mod I have installed since I had to reformat my hard drive a while back.
The download is a self installing file. Double click and follow it's instructions. Here is the section from the manual for requirements:
Before installing
Requirements
Since this is a mod for Civilization 4, all the requirements that apply to the game itself
apply to the mod too, of course. Still, due to the advanced nature of the mod, its
requirements are a bit higher than these of vanilla* game. While the game itself can run
on videocards not supporting 2.0 shaders, you will need a SM2.0-capable videocard to
run our mod without trouble. This means that we can't guarantee that our mod will run
on Intel onboard videocards (often found on laptops).
Also, due to much more content and functionality compared to vanilla game, it is more
hungry for RAM, VRAM and CPU performance. This is especially true for larger maps
and for the bundled World Map.
Our mod is designed to be run on Beyond the Sword or Civ 4 Complete patched to
latest available version (3.19). Its installer is designed to be compatible with Steam
version of the game as well. Be sure to clean your CustomAssets folder before (or after)
installing – it is a common source of troubles with mods in general.
OK. I will check these boards come Saturday to make sure you're not..."exhausted."
Thanks for the above W8...sounds like I can just install without worries.
Just lost my first Shogun 2 campaign btw...the AI in this TW is by far the best of any of the prior games, kniving and sneaky. Awesome game though, gonna go back for more tomorrow :)
Did you really spell conniving, "kniving"?!

IIRC, CA was going to beta-test an online campaign mode for Empire. However, I'm not sure if they ever got around to actually doing so.
I knew about the online battles, but then every TW title has had them.

This one is fast moving, like a comet, but I think I've got it right.
^SWEET!
Yes I did actually spell it 'kniving'...don't tell anyone.
Got Invictus installed last night before bed, didn't fire it up though.
I play Invictus for about an hour last night. Really nice graphics overhaul, lots of game changes. Runs slow though 'cause there's 54 civs in play!!! I didn't get very far into the game, playing as Rome, so I'll try to get some more in tonight.
I could be available for a MP game tomorrow night...
54 civs to play??? Holy frijoles.
Awesome (Gus) and double awesome (Barthheart)!
Let's try to look for each other on Steam then saturday night around 9:30ish then. Try running a random game with a large or medium sized map with fewer civs. The manual says that with the World Scenario that comes with the mod many will experience lag because of the 54 civs in it.
And if you check under game options "set ai player to win" or something like that, prepare to be smoked really badly unless you are a Civilization god. I can't tell you how many times I shook my fists in rage and yelled at the monitor as the AI meticulously slaughtered my pathetic backside. Good stuff really...
I don't know if what's left of my fragile ego can handle another spanking in another game by another AI in the same week.
I hear ya, which is why I haven't been playing much computer games lately. But when I discovered this mod I couldn't believe how fun it was. The ai is really good and when there are no humans to play against, this mod is a pretty decent substitute.
^Those are the magic words for me, since 99.99% of the time I hate people.
^+1
I'm finding that as I get older I'm liking people in general less. Don't know why, but there it is. Good thing we have Grogheads were there still exists civilized folk.
I don't know...since we spend time here virtually and not physically it may be a lot easier. Usually I want to kill people I am forced to share the same space with, like in a train for 90 minutes.
It's because people who sit next to you on the train think they're the only one on board. They hog your personal space, give no consideration to you when you need to get out of your seat, etc. Then they look at you like you're violating the Geneva Convention when you pardon yourself politely whilst trying to exit.
No one has courtesy or consideration of others anymore.
^Man it's like you're inside my head!
Maybe we here really are all one collective hive mind and not separate people as we think we are.
Does the Realism-Invictus mod work with the Steam version of the game?
I think it does...I think its mentioned earlier in this thread. I fired it up and it is working for me btw.
15 achievements and counting in Team Fortress 2 over the past 24 hours. W00T!!!
Gus, W8 and Barthheart, what are the parameters for the game tonight? Mods or vanilla? If mods, which one(s)?

MP live is real easy. When you load BtS, choose Multiplayer Games. You will be asked to login with your Gamespy ID, so if you don't already have one, go get one. Once you have done so, you will be in the Lobby. You willl look for the name of the game you will be playing, for instance, I host and when W8 and I play, he is looking for Chris's Game. You double click it, enter the password and you will be taken to the Staging Rooom. Once there, you can choose your Civ and your Leader and your Difficulty level. The host can set everything from map size to victory conditions to, well, anything you can do in a single player game. Once everybody clicks the Ready box, the host launches and you are brought to your game. You take your turn, hit Enter and once everyone has hit Enter, you go to the next turn. Simple as all that.
As long as there is no objections, I will host. If you have any preferences as to map size or type, number of civs, victory conditions, game options (No Tech Trading, Always War, Always Peace, etc), please make them known. Once we can all agree, we'll launch. I have PM'd you the password.
I second to have MetalDog host. The only mod I have installed in Realism Invictus but if everyone doesn't have it let's play vanilla BtS.

The only thing that will keep me from making it tonight is if my family dinner runs long. If I am not there by 9:35pm don't wait for me. I will however try to make it every week if it's always at 9:30pm EST Saturday. That time should usually work for me. Hope to see you guys later.

Ok got into the MP lobby. Got the password you sent. What's the name of the game we are going to be looking for?
I'm good with MetalDog hosting. I'd say lets try vanilla for this first outting, I'm willing to try anything.
I should have no problem showing up at 9:30 pm (EST?) tonight.
See ya then. 8)
Chris's Game. It will be password protected. I sent you the password already and it's all lowercase. Start time is 9:30 Eastern. I, too, would prefer vanilla as Gus is a Civ IV noob and it's easier to answer questions for me that way. And it's going to be Beyond the Sword.
Do you fellas have any preferences? Number of Civ's? Map size? Victory conditions? Game play restrictions? Let's get'em all out in the open now. We'll have more time to play tonight.
YOu and w8taminute should choose that stuff as I have no idea how it affects a game that we are only playing for an hour.... or can we save an MP game and play again later??
Quote from: MetalDog on February 18, 2012, 01:35:54 PM

o'really? Well, I've never been a serious fanatic about any sports to be honest with you. Except for this years superbowl, and a couple of world series in past years. :D
I usually like to play on continents or I like archipelagos. But ever since I started playing with MetalDog I think my new map favorite is fractal. I vote for temperate climate, and medium aged planet. If we have 3 or 4 human players let's have 7 or 6 ai players.
Barthheart, these MP sessions can indeed be saved and resumed later on. No need to kill ourselves trying to finish a game in an hour.
My question is, if Gus can't make it tonight, can he join our game next time by subbing in as one of the ai players?
Oh and yes, I'm talking about 9:30pm Eastern Time.
Barring any disaster I will be able to make it. We can play for an hour and then pick up the same game next week can't we?
Reminder for the newest members who are not Steam adverse that we have a group.
The hope is to start scheduling some Groghead events later next month. However I encourage everyone to schedule their own events. I'm pretty sure that if you schedule it someone will come and join you in your gaming adventures.
Also I tried to create an abbreviation to use as tag for those who want too, but "grog" and "gh" were both taken. So any recommendations for an abbreviation for grogheads? Hell I don't even know if we want one, but it seems as if we should have one.
What's the character limit?
grghds ?
I'm good with grogz but will leave it open to discussion for awhile longer. So in theory, you could be Longblade (Grogz) or some such thing. You see it alot on FPS servers to identify the various clans.
Anyone know how dedicated servers work? I know that some games like L4D2 for example you can load onto Steam servers without the requirement of a dedicated server.
I guess what I'd like to look into is how can we setup a game like Team Fortress 2 so that it's a Grog on Grog battle.

And can I get a sticky? In a few weeks, I'm going to start testing out setting up some events for the Steam group. If it gets traction and the it brings the community together for some weekend gaming, I'd like to expand out so that games like European Escalation and others that are better online against a human. And I think that if you can play against someone you know from here as opposed to a complete random stranger the fun level goes up too.

Indeed. I sold mine to GOG some time ago.

Hmmm...I'm honestly not sure how one would go about setting up a password or private server in TF2. Don't entirely know if it's possible.

Hmmm...I'm honestly not sure how one would go about setting up a password or private server in TF2. Don't entirely know if it's possible.
I suspect that if we paid for our own server we could easily password protect it. That or simply advise folks that when folks from our clan arrive we'll boot non-members to make room. I've had it happen to me. Never liked it, but it's understandable. :)
OK. Did some preliminary research on server rental today. The rental fee itself is not too bad per person around $1/player slot. So a 12 person server is around $12/month and there is a discount of like 10-15% if you do a like a 6 or 12 month rental. Of course there are serveral dozen games that have server rentals, Team Fortress and all the value shooters, Bad Company, Modern Warfare, Red Orchastra, etc...the game does not determine the rental fee.
So I guess there are some basic questions that would need to be asked and responded to by the groghead clan/community.
1. Do we even want to look at a groghead game server?
2. What game would we initial look at hosting a clan server?
3. How many folks would be interested in participating in organized game events?
4. Public or Private Server?
5. Long term funding of the server?
So I'll throw it out to the community to discuss. Here is one of the rental sites that I was researching.

1. Do we even want to look at a groghead game server?
If we can get enough interest I say why not? I would be interested in our own server.
2. What game would we initial look at hosting a clan server?
My input is, Red Orchestra 2, Battlefied 3, Call of Duty Spec Ops.
3. How many folks would be interested in participating in organized game events?
I would (+1)
4. Public or Private Server? Doesn't matter to me, or whichever is less expensive.
5. Long term funding of the server? I would be willing to pay for my share if the per anum is no more than say 20 dollars.

I have always enjoyed it when my site hosted a server.
Here's the deal.
We need to get Grogheads incorporated so we have a legal, working body with which to play with money.
At that point folks who wish to donate toward a server will at least have something to aim at.
Probably the server will be open to all, but if it gets crowded the guys who pay get the first slot, followed by those who hang with us in the group.
So if you're some general dude who finds the server you're welcome but will get bumped if someone from the forums/Steam group appears, and those folks might get bumped from play to make room for anyone who has donated.
How does that sound?

BTW, typically servers I've used in the past are happy to change the game on it, but usually hint that they'd prefer you didn't swap out three games a night.
Typically we'd pick something like Call of Duty vXYZ and play it for three months. Then we'd select something else.
The cool thing is that most of the multiplayer games offer consoles that let us administer the game: we can choose which maps to play, what types of games, how long they last, bump up the realism, and kick a$$h0l3s when they get out of line and/or cheat.
But I wouldn't expect us to play games and constantly rotate them.
I'm all for this. Now to answer your specific questions:
1. Do we even want to look at a groghead game server? Yes
2. What game would we initial look at hosting a clan server? WH40K Space Marine
3. How many folks would be interested in participating in organized game events? I would, but I am not so good.
4. Public or Private Server? Private
5. Long term funding of the server? I am for that.

Well to answer my own questions.
1. Yes
2. Here I certainly think there is some room for discussion. I will say that the real attraction of Team Fortress 2 is that is not only fun, but it is FREE. Also the computer specs are not too high so it allows for more folks with not top of the line rigs to play. And given the economic times the might be something to consider. Other than that I think if the host site is ok with swapping out games, then we can schedule events and change the server to meet the event.
3. The organization piece I'm good with now if we can all get on at the same time that's another issue seperately. However, I think most of us with a week or two notice can arrange to be have an open slot at some point during the week or weekend.
4. Although private is appealling. Public would be the way to go. That way folks passing through the site can join in too and perhaps build up both site and steam community.
5. Long term I think a paypal system will need to be implemented. However I'm prepared to cover an initial cost to get it up and running with the expectation that the community will come together with a donation system to keep it running.
I like the idea of a public server for two reasons:
First, you get more chances to get people playing. Nothing sucks more than having three guys from the forums looking around on a Thursday night wondering WTF happened to everyone.
Second, it is a kind of marketing. It won't be particularly helpful in getting millions of people to find the website, but it does offer the opportunity to pimp GrogHeads if someone randomly stumbles upon it. It also fosters the community. We're gamers, we like to game, and oh-by-the-way here's our server. If someday in the next couple of years we start making some reliable coin, I can foresee a day when we might host a couple of servers.
As for what to play, that's up to the community. My guess is that in slack periods where there haven't been any big releases for a couple of months, Space Marine or Team Fortress 2 would be perfect. I will say that I love TF2, but it is hyper frenetic. It's an over-the-top FPS where the idea is just live as long as you can until the next spawn.
But that is all subject to change.
For now, we're working as fast as reasonably possible to get our company set up. From there we will be able to do a great many more things.
Yeah strategery is not a strong suit of TF2, but the guns blazing, straight ahead approach is a good time.
I'd also recommend any of the other source engine games. Day of Defeat is actually pretty fun and can be had for like $10 and many times for much less.
Also L4D2 could lead to some fun evenings. Especially if you did a versus game. Zombie players against Survivor players.

Day of Defeat is a great suggestion.
L4D2 is a great one also. Playing the Zombies has something of a learning curve and a lot of guys out there have zero tolerance for screwing up. Playing amongst ourselves would give us the opportunity to learn without having some dolt chewing us out if we screw it up.
I would be all for it. I find that alot of games especially FPS types are alot more fun playing with people you know.
Now I don't own alot of multi-player games via STEAM but if we were to stick to one game for a while I am sure I could be easily convinced to purchase it. ;D

I like the way this sounds.
Made some updates to the Steam page nothing fancy. Just some quotes I stole off the main page and a site link.
^Can you link it here?
Yeah. That's what I did. If you look at the main group page there is now a grogheads link to the forums. Maybe I should have directed it to the main page instead?
No I mean can you put a link to it in this thread...unless you already did that on another page that I missed?
As far as linking the Steam page to Grogheads, users can figure it out, no sweat.
Oh. I'm not sure. I'll try later.
Grogheads Steam page. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/grogheads (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/grogheads)
Eventually I'd like to start posting announcements. Things new reviews or articles from the site.
Also as we've been discussing start up using the schedule events to remind folks of a TF2 or CIV gaming night. I don't know how well it'll work out, but I honestly think that there are a number of guys here who want to game online with each other.
Huh I guess I did link to the main page and not the forums. And there is also a link that I'd put in the first post of the thread when I started the group.
For some reason I missed the whole TF2 being free. Yes I know shame on me. :-\ Well Im dld it now and should have it by the time we schedule something.
Looking forward to some MP madness. TF2's a good choice. Never played Day of Defeat, but I'd pick it up. And Left 4 Dead 2 is just fun. BF3 is awesome, but that's getting away from Steam and costs a Hell of a lot more than any of those. ;D
Reminder to all the new folks that there is a Steam group up.
I'd encourage all of you who want to play multiplayer on one of your Steam games to post a challenge here and if you request it I can add to the announcement/schedule on Steam.
The plan is to still have a MP server of some sort not sure when this will happen, but it will happen.
Forgot to do it before - but on it now.

^I'm really not worthy. And rarely am I worthy of a game as deep as Warlock either. I am even going to try to re-gear my OCD brain again so I can play both Diablo III and Warlock in the same week.

Complete weak sauce if you cannot play two games over the course of one week!
^Not weak I am just wired that way, mofo. I am attempting to unwire.
I'm going the opposite direction and limiting the number of games I bounce between each week or month. Right now I'm doing pretty good with the Diablo 3/NWN2 (RPG Fix) and Conflict of Heroes (Counter and Hex). I've not played any other games in about a week, which is good for me.
My thing is that I usually read about something loosely related to what I am playing. Easier to do with history based strategy/tactical games. With fantasy games as long as it's creepy/spooky/ out there my OCD mind is happy.

I'm reading the Diablo 3 strategy guide on the crapper. It's about as deep as I want to deal with these days outside of work stuff.
The shitter is my throne.
With the house empty except for my dog this past week I have gotten used to reading with the door open and singing along to the music in the background.
Dog is not pleased but whatever...I have to stand out with him in the damned rain while he empties his colon. All is fair.
Sure, but who's the one cleaning up the mess at the end of the day? Who owns who?
Since I live in my own woods, I shovel it all into a wheelbarrow monthly and literally use it to fertilize the lawn and garden. He pulls the wheelbarrow. HA!
Ha! Round one to Gus, methinks!
Fallen Earth is pretty decent. It's quirky and definitely different to the standard MMORPG, however it's definitely not to everyone's taste. I love how the crafting works.
^I could not have scripted it better with our own New Poo coming in after that last post. Well done, Sir.

I wish you would have video taped and posted to youtube.

I noticed that fell off the radar. If it recorded my Diablo 3 time, I may have single handedly surpassed the time spent on Warlock by the entire group.
I was in rare form last night Bison, I must have turned a really bright Diablo red. Rare for me at 37 with a game, but there you have it.
I was there when I started Hell difficulty. I swore. A lot.
Thing is I am not hardcore with D3 at all and I was still all PO'd. The game does something to people, mentally.

I own Warlock, along with all the DLC except the last one,.. Armageddon. I haven't played it very much, none at all multiplayer, but I am willing to give it a try soon.
If you send Metaldog a PM here or a message on Steam, I'm sure he'll be willing to setup a game with you.

Heh, yeah. He's a whore for the Warlock MP!
Its gonna be a bit. I haven't played in awhile, and never MP. I need a little time to refine my gameplay.

MP is mostly co-op play, until there are spoils to be had
