I continue to wonder if something that floats is really stabilized enough for landings.
Toonces - Don't ask me, I just close my eyes and take it.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

Here is a video of the full launch and "launch vehicle failure".  Glad this was an unmanned mission...

The failure starts around the 2:44 mark.  Note the dark object around 2:48...some are speculating that may be the Dragon capsule.

Watched it on Nasa TV today.  The launch was streamed live to the ISS.  I can only imagine how they must feel right now.
Glad no one was on board, but we are still far from reliable space travel.

This is being suggested as the reason : Over pressure in the liquid oxygen tank caused the explosion.

The Space X launch of a Falcon 9 rocket with 11 Orbcomm Inc. communications satellites scheduled for today has been pushed to 8:33 p.m. ET Monday.  Hope they nail the landing this time! O0   ...and looks like they're going to try to land the booster back at Cape Canaveral instead of a barge.

Trying to do what Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin did last month by landing a launched rocket.

Glad to hear they nailed it this time.  Space X probably should have had a few land landings before they attempted the barge landing...and I think this trumps Blue Origin's landing since Space X actually put up some satellites O0

Wow. I wasn't expecting them to pull that off so quickly.

OJsDad

Steve, I agree that having launched satellites first did make the SpaceX landing more impressive.

The Falcon 9 first stage that was recovered a couple of weeks back is ready to go again:

Amazing turn around when you consider the apparent wear and tear shown in this picture:

OJsDad

I wonder if Space X is helping develop this or has their own program going.  I would think they would want a propulsion system than what we currently have.

Believe that propulsion system would only be suitable for spacecraft, not launch vehicles. Third stage maybe? but doubt that would ever be cost effective except for missions going way beyond earth orbit.

OJsDad

I don't know Rekim, reading A Sword Into Darkness, they used these engines to for both launch and space flight.  I know its a book, but it seems plausible.

I just finished A Sword into Darkness. I wonder how much of that was based on plausible tech. If the author (a physicist) wasn't making things up then there is a lot of promise in non-combustion engines.
