Due to the difficulties with the AI nations this game has ended.

Host:PBEM Llamaserver. All_Hail_Grogdom (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=All_Hail_Grogdom)
Age: MA
Map: Cradle of Dominion (stock map) (199 land + 22 sea, random start locations)
How Often on Turns: start with 24h interval. Adjust as needed.
Number of Players: the more the merrier! (5 confirmed)
Mods: None (Worthy Heroes might be fun though; it offers a large set of more useful heroes)

Non-Standard Settings: Hall of Fame entries 15, Renaming is allowed, Graphs ON as this is co-op.
Victory Conditions: Disciple team win, players against AI, do we want a last man standing or shall we play with Victory Points (for ex. 2/3rd of the VPs needed of claimed Thrones?)
Diplomacy Policy: I recommend using email to engage in diplomacy. The in-game messaging system does not keep a logfile, so after a message has been read in-game it will be gone forever. Trades should be fulfilled. No further house rules as this is a co-op game.
Cheesy Tricks: New players won't know them and won't be ready for them. This is things like sending 50 bad items to someone right as they put up forge of the ancients to make them waste gems; using scouts to constantly siege someone's fortress; and there are probably a few others I historically read about but have since forgotten. (just noted for good measure)

Note1: The hosting time limits are slightly indicative, but we are pressed to make them whenever possible. In other words; if you can't make the turn limit, be sure to post in this thread to let me know in advance so I can extend the time in the llamaserver, otherwise Llamaserver will push the next turn and you will not have given any orders.
Better yet is sending me an email, which you have gotten in a PM.
I have an irregular working schedule with stops abroad sometimes, so I might put in the odd request for a few more hours/days as well. I hope we can all be flexible about this. If not, then please say so up front, this game might not be suited for you.

Note2:Stay fair, people. If you cannot swallow a defeat, then you will be a newbie forever. In spirit of my previous sentence, please do not go AI after a single major battle lost

Note3: Remember to keep an eye on the turn interval. I will update changes in interval in this thread.
Be sure to report EARLY if you will not be able to send in a turn in time.

Note 4:
I want to put a very good project into the spotlight made by a player called momfreak.
Mod Inspector to read up to date unit and magic data from the game files. Very handy! (https://larzm42.github.io/dom4inspector/)

This webpage enables you to select some mods that you will be using for the game and then display accurate information about all the spells and items in the game.
You can also view the stock vanilla game data with this webpage.
Super handy as reference.

Note 5: When the game is setup you will all need to send your pretender to Llamaserver.
You can send your pretender file as an attachment to: (Put in the name of the game in the title, leave the body empty)

pretenders@llamaserver.net

You can find your pretender file in your Dominions 3\savegames\newlords folder.
it has a file format <era>_<nation>_0.2h

It will overwrite and old pretenders for the same era/nation.

After all the pretenders have been sent in the game can be kicked off and you will receive your turns in the mail.
Just send your turn back to turns@llamaserver.net (probably just reply to sender)

Only send in the .2h file. The .trn file is only sent by Llama to YOU.

I picked up Dom 4 during a sale some time back, at Gamersgate, but haven't installed it yet. I will always feel bad about us western clowns deciding to abandon the previous forum game (of Dom3) while the eastern players were still having fun doing their things; for which I share partial responsibility as one of the admins.  :-[ :'(

(Note that this is not to be confused with the other game we ran concurrently with fewer players where in my last dozen turns I summoned King Ghidora and ran him in raids all over my lizardman neighbor to the west. I think that game went to the full end.  O0 )

As another of the western powers who regrets stopping please count me in as well, just need a smaller map this time. I was unsure about this but just noticed that Dominions 4 is currently dirt cheap on Gamersgate (£4.05) I'll post it in the sale section of the main site and see if anyone else is interested.

I don't even know that we need a smaller map. Although on the question of teams, does Dom4 do teams now? -- can the AI players be grouped into teams (or ally themselves)? Even if teams aren't a thing formally, we can all agree to work with each other, allowing for the occasional widespread effect which may not be conducive to everyone.

I meant Disciple mode. That was players can team up. I am not sure wether the AI handles Disciple mode though. And I am fairly sure the AI nations cannot be put into an artificial group like you see often with skirmish matches in RTS games.
Alternatively human players can just agree upon alliances like always. Again, in this form every AI is free for all.

I'll see wether Disciple mode can be leveraged to create AI teams though.

And whats the verdict on mods? Perhaps WorthyHeroes is nice, but I cant see any other must haves.

I have tested and good news!

Human players as well as AI can be put into teams;every player runs his own nation, but the teams have one nation with a Pretender God and all other nations in that team are Disciples.
I am not really sure about what this means, but the technical possibility to divide all participating rules into teams/alliances enforced by the game instead of diplomacy is definately there!  O0

Thought the last one I participated in (Dom 3) ended too prematurely.   :'(  Was the only one I'd been in, so I'm curious to see how an MP game ultimately turns out.

I'd be fine with compstomp as well. I mean all human team vs equal size AI team.
But I'm fine with any of the aforementioned suggestions, if they are the preferred options.

The main problem with a random nation is that players often design pretenders to work with a specific faction.

Not that this will bother me; just pointing it out to remind players of implications: if you choose to go random, build a pretender who can work with anything.

Okay, are we going with Disciples to a king-pretender, or are we all basically teaming independently (so that we may accidentally incur friendly-fire effects)?

This makes a difference in what kind of pretender we need to make: a pretender; a pretender who will have disciples; or a disciple.

We are talking about teaming up and the only way to enforce it in-game is by going Disciple mode.
We can, however, all take a seperate team and all have full-Pretender Gods, but this will mean that the game will treat us as enemies no matter what kind of agreement we make with eachother here on the forum.
If people are new to this, perhaps its best to just team up in-game to avoid fraticide. :)

That's fine with me (and I agree about it being safest and less annoying for people new to the game), but this has to be settled before we can send in our pretenders.

Also, someone will have to be appointed king (or appoint themselves  :D ), or whatever the terminology is, because that also makes a difference in what category of pretender is designed: the king has to tell the game he's setting up that kind of pretender, and the disciples have to tell the game they're setting up disciple pretenders.


....um, also, if you're like me (and I know I am), you may have no idea what distinctions are involved in being a disciple and being a king-or-whatever-it's-called. AM I GOING TO HAVE TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT THIS?!?

Apologies for the slackness, I think I rolled death +5 in the Christmas stakes. Anyway I should shortly  be back to having a functioning brain but in the meantime I'll take Ulm (if free) on the basis of its not Ermor and I notice a big section on how to play it well in the manual. Thus well informed I will be able to decide that I know better and do something totally different.

As to Lord I'll pass and vote for whoever tops the poll thus increasing their majority and securing myself first dibs on the kickbacks.

Game is accepting your pretenders!

Use game name All_Hail_Grogdom (with underscores) in your subject and leave the body of the email text empty.

It seems like I need to add AI nations as if it were players, so that involves making pretenders. I would appreciate it if you could all create some more pretenders so we can use those. That way players will not know exactly which pretender Gods will be in the game.

 :o Ummmm.... granted, I haven't played Dom 4 before, but going back to Dom 2 through Dom 3 I don't recall ever having to manually make pretenders for the AI.

But then again, I don't think I've played a Llamaserver game before with AI players, much less on teams. So maybe that's the difference?

Regardless, I shall take advantage of this situation to bring forth my Cabal of Rogues. (Originally created to feature in sequels to Cry of Justice, after hell freezes over at this rate.)

I may poke around the interwebz to see if Dom4 fan sites are hosting any interesting pretenders for importing.

I am not entirely sure either yet. I don't know if the system adds in AI nations for open slots after players are all in.

It occurred to me last night (and then I went to play MechWO) that there's no point creating AI pretenders until we know: (a) which factions won't be played by the human team (since a pretender must be connected to a faction, thus excluding or duplicating that faction); and (b) what the planned setup is for regular AI pretenders or Master/disciple teams.

I suppose (a) could be gotten around by just accepting that there could be faction repeats. But (b) has to be settled and specified first or the process can't even be started.

Lets just get our player pretenders in first. Then Ill try to start and see if the game adds AI factions. Its quickest and the worst thing that can happen is needing a quick restart.

I found it through the game - it'll take you to the default save folder.

But yes...it's not easy to find.

Umm.. on second thought.. this is purely Co-op versus the AI?  Think I'll duck out on this one.   I'm certainly no Dom veteran, but I'll wait for a future PvP one.

I dont think it works.
Llamaserver only reports 6 players. And we are all in one team. I highly doubt the system fills in the rest with AI nations.
Lets see what the first turn gives, but otherwise I am not sure how we could make this work in the format we want.
The only way is to upload pretenders for all AI nations as I suspected earlier and make those players AI controlled.

Let's continue the experiment. I'm feel pretty confident there are AI pretender builds around in the last and easiest resort; in the other last resort, I'll build some, once I get a list of excluded factions for sure (because we've already chosen ours).

There is only one pretender nation (you can check in the Pretenders Overview menu), that's Nefaro's abandoned nation.
There is no use continueing this game I am afraid, so I'll end it.

Please let me know what you guys want.

a)everybody uploads two pretenders, one for his played nation and one for an AI nation.

b)we restart as a PvP game and try to get Nef back in.

c)we quit altogether.

Jason, the pretender sending is exactly the same as you would normally do, the only caveat I can think of is that Llamaserver might force you to use a seperate email address for each pretender, to fool the system in thinking its a seperate player. But I haven't checked.
I mean, I did revert Nefaro's nation to my email address as well, so the system might be ok with one player playing more nations effectively.

The way it works is that we upload pretenders for as many AI nations as we want, just like we would be human players.
When the first turn gets sent out, you load the game with your AI nation and in the game menu (while in game with the turn loaded) you have the option to revert the nation to AI.

This will make the game have several AI nations, which the admins can group into a team if need be.

Hm, seems to be a bug: I received the expected email that Ys had called an end to the game, and then a twelve hour alert about 40 minutes later that the next turn was coming up -- and then fifteen minutes after that a notice for Turn 3!  :o

(For what it's worth, alerts from this forum often come late or not at all; possibly the problem is some quirk in my email system.)

All right, I'm about to try sending in all Pretenders, including Pangaea (originally Nef's), except for of course the human player factions (besides myself) and the C'tis (since Ysk tested sending them in to revert them to AI).

Presumably what I'll do is start the turn for each of them and resign to them to AI manually? Or should that be done from the admin board? (And, um, how do I get to the admin board again? I've slept several times since the last time I admin'd.) I should probably do it manually, since doing it from the admin board might risk nixing my email address from the game?

Problem #2: After I sent the Bandar Log pretender, the slots were closed. Is there a maximum of twelve slots?! I haven't verified, but I feel like I remember we had more (indeed a full roster) in our first forum game...?

Okay, I have put on a larger map (Glory of the Gods, which is a normal large map), and increased pretenders beyond 24 (100 being the next option up -- but don't worry, we'll only have 30 total).

Okay, all AI pretenders submitted (but if someone wants to put in their own AI pretender for a faction, you can still do so -- it'll just overwrite the pretender already there for that faction).

All the pretenders have been accepted.

I've also emailed and pmailed Beowulf to see if he's still going to do the game, and if so it's time for him to re-upload his pretender. We'll give that a couple of days.

I'm perfectly fine with setting the interval to a week or longer. That doesn't mean we have to take a week -- we could take three hours! It's just a safety backstop in case an emergency happens and emails / pmails / thread posts don't get sent out to the admins in time to put a hold on the gameclock.

I've set the game interval to 7 days, to be safe. Note that IT ISN'T NECESSARY TO TAKE THE WHOLE TIME PERIOD! The clock will advance when all players send in their turns; and once we set most of the players to AI, that'll leave only the 5 of us to move the clock forward with our turns.

I'm worried that somehow the patch has screwed up the game creation, tho...

Yes cheers for your efforts on this Jason. The good news is that my turn (Steam) opens fine. I do get messages telling me that most of the AI players are cheating as they have Pretenders who are more powerful than is allowed but the AI probably needs all the help it can get against such a highly skilled and deadly grogheads team  (Or maybe they will just wipe us in three turns, either why is cool.)

I think the reason for the 'more-powerful-than-allowed' is because I created all the AI pretenders as PRETENDERS, not most of them as disciples. I just didn't know how that was going to work, and in fact had no teams in mind when I made them. (Ditto Ysk for the C'Tis, no doubt!)

Also, I think part of the problem is that even after patching I'm still on version 4.27 instead of 4.29. But I think I inadvertently re-downloaded the 4.27 installer from GG instead of 4.29.

This theory turns out to be at least somewhat correct: I can now get into the game! I'm somewhat worried that there aren't enough "AI" teams listed, but I suspect this is because they're the only ones deemed "too powerful" under "current Dom4 rules". Since I recognize both pretenders and disciples in that list (Ys and Xibalba for example), I'm going to guess this is a leftover artifact to their characters being generated in 4.27.

Okay, I'm turning those AI teams over to the computer (while looking as little as possible at their situations before I do so, and shaking my head like an etch-a-sketch  :D ), and then saving and exiting. All AIs are set to random. I'll email those back to the server eventually. This might mean that the AI won't actually do a first turn, just an automatic collection of any gems and things like that.

Update: I went back and made sure to "End Turn" (with each of them set to AI) which also saved and quitted -- I noticed the description said that if the file was sent to a network it would register as an incomplete turn otherwise, and I didn't want to take chances.

Each save warned me, after going to AI, that when I "End Turn"'d I hadn't really done anything including moving my two commanders. So we should probably have a house rule, which I'll mention in the next post to ensure everyone sees it.

Going back to make sure I "End Turn"'d on each AI player, I received a warning that I hadn't really done anything especially with my two commanders. (Everyone gets a 'commander' pretender plus one stock commander to start with.)

So we should have a house rule, I think: don't expand toward any enemy pretender you can see (if any) on your first turn. They'll all be running one turn behind, and some of them have smaller teams than we do.

Interestingly, Abyssia (the first in the group of course) has listed as received but nothing else yet. (Also Jotenheim, which is Jamus's faction.) I suspect this means only Ab got registered, and I'll have to send everything else separately.

Yeah its a bit laborous to kickstart all the AIs.
Some mails don't come through and you need to manually request a resend in the admin options over at Llama.
All nations need to be submitted seperately indeed.

Oh, you too?! Huh. I noticed mine was inactive, and then wondered if I had set mine to dormant (surely not imprisoned, although three of the AIs I created are imprisoned; four or five are dormant.)

Also, I got into family TV time last night and forgot I was supposed to send photos of my starting position. Consequently when I got upstairs, I ended up studying for my new AAR project instead.  :-[

I should pull up my Caelum pretender's original file and check his status.

Is anyone else having this problem?! Jamus, you sent your move in first: was your disciple on deck?

We have ground to be concerned, since we know that the new update has at least slightly changed the coding for what counts as legal pretenders. Although I don't recall seeing "Caelum" on the "cheating" list. (I also don't recall seeing whether any of the non-dorm-prisoned AIs were characters available for action with their first general and scout, but I was trying my best not to pay attention to their starting detail and that information would have been on the left of the screen when I was trying not to even see much on the right side. Consequently, my lack of remembering there means nothing.)

I think the circles on those adjacent territories mean I can't march things there on foot across the river; but most of my faction troops can fly so that's no big whoop. I'm hiring some melee and archers this turn (all of whom can fly and carry magical weapons), plus starting up my group of most-cost-effective researchers. I'm sending my initial scout to the area with the arrow-path (over the river), to the only adjacent territory with any fields. (And also mountains, so the two bonuses and maluses average out I guess.)

I don't think we set up the game for the thrones on the map to mean anything, but they're there anyway: I haven't played Dom 4 before, so I don't know whether they confer benefits beyond a special scoring criteria to be set up before gamestart.

Okay, good, Ysk's dormancy (not to be confused with Ys' dormancy! -- since Ys is an AI team in this game ;) ) is making us half-dormant. That answers that problem.

I've set the C'Tis to my email address as requested and resent the turn. It arrived no problem, but it'll be another 45 minutes at least before I'm home from work and in a position to set them to AI, end their turn, and send their turn back. (Don't know why Ysk's email wasn't working...?)

I noticed the new turns this morning when I logged in -- but I got sent new turns for all the characters I thought I set to AI, too.

Haven't been back home where I could open them yet. I really wasn't expecting to get a Turn 2 about them, though...  :o ???

Bad news. I downloaded Abyssia's turn, and read this message:

"CD key violation: Your CD key (23060-....) has been used on multiple installations (Abysia and Agartha). Your orders have not been executed."

Curiously, Agartha's turn was not sent back. Don't know what that means. (Factions sometimes have different names based on their earliest existing version, but Agartha existed and was called Agartha in the Early Age. And I can account for the identity of all the factions I did get back.)

Going to the next AI on the list, Asphodel, I got the same error, except pairing Asphodel and Caelum -- and except I did get Caelum's 2nd turn.

Going to the Llama page for the game, I notice that Agartha isn't on the list as waiting for the turn to be sent.

My current theory is that Agartha did get set to AI, but for some reason the game flagged all my other turns as being a violation of CD keys on multiple computers; which would be fair except I'm not using multiple computers. (Nor am I using a Steam copy, but a Gamersgate copy with a CD key that has to be entered manually.)

If so, the game is borked.  :-\ I don't even know what to do differently for a restart, since all I did was, in effect, what the Llamaserver instructions themselves say to do for turning pretenders to the AI. The only difference between any of them (other than I may have sent Agartha's turn in first before Abyssia by accident, explaining why it got accounted as legal and so switched to AI) is that Ysk was technically playing C'tis (having designed them), and I went into Llama to set its email to mine since the server wasn't sending the first game turn to Ysk for unknown reasons. And that difference made no difference!  -- C'tis was sent back as a CD violation, too.

Maybe because you are using a GG copy instead of steam?

Is so, what if you just email the AI pretenders you made to Ysk or myself and we add them?

But try 2 might be borked.

Ysk couldn't get the server to send him C'tis' turn 1, and it ended up on the CD violation list. I'm dubious that sending him back all my AI turns will work any better than C'tis did for him, and it would still leave C'tis left over.

I feel pretty strongly that the update which happened between making the pretenders and generating their first turn, is what has botched everything. I can't prove that for certain.

I'm sorry to say that at this point I'd rather just be playing other games and not worrying about Dom4.  :pullhair:  :'(

No reason any number of us couldn't restart the game vs each other I guess, and to hell with the AI pretenders.

Yeah I feel the same at this point.
Lots of games to play.
Lets call it quits for now. Perhaps when morale has risen again we can try to restart a vs game.

Chortle... I thought Ysk was going to 'end' or otherwise stop the game, so I didn't bother doing it myself. This morning I come to work and find a huge batch of 12 hour warnings and 3rd turn files for Caelum and all the AIs.  ::) :buck2:

Note to self: kill the game after brunch...

Lol, it's still sending turns out!  ::) :P

I went in a minute ago and declared the game finished with admin powers. Twice. (It asks twice with the password just to be sure.) We'll see if that takes. It should send out one more email alerting to the game ending.

Heh, well at least I am not crazy then and now I can be sure I did press that Game End button in Llama. :D
