Part of the good MTV did for me was putting songs in front of me that I otherwise wouldn't have listened to. Doing so, I found a lot of stuff I liked. ABC was one of them.

That's true, though early on you didn't have much in the way of choices. I remember very clearly those first few weeks when it came on and I'd watch every music video multiple times, even the awful ones.

We had just landed in Dover AFB (Delaware), late at night, rented a crappy Chevy Corsica to drive over the Philly to catch a flight to New Orleans to spend the summer with family in '87. I didn't see the video for maybe another 2 years, but I remember exactly where I was when I first heard it.
