Title: Holiday Damage Thread
Post by: -budd- on November 27, 2015, 04:17:12 PM
Since the sales started a bit early this year. Might as well start the damage thread early. Besides I don't want to appear to be the only one lacking impulse control, misery loves company.

Lets see
CO2- knock on all doors. Technically not part of a holiday sale, but i did have loyal customer discount coupon. $24.00

DCB-yea i folded,somehow i always knew i would.Better yet i ordered the hard copy,haven't done that in about a decade.Manual does look nice though.$70.00  :uglystupid2:

GG World at War- a world divided-just couldn't pass up the $9.99 price[finding time is another matter] in fact i just got done installing and adding the mod. Rushed over here to confess my weakness.

Kotor2- supposed to be a good RPG-$2.49
The Survivalist- $2.50

My first actually Steam purchases were a few for my daughter
Costume Quest 1&2 -$4.00
Chicken Invaders 4 + the holiday DLC- $7.00
Crayon Physics Deluxe- $5.50

Ok, grabbed Attila plus all of the culture DLC and Charlemagne, and a game called SanctuaryRPG Black Edition: http://store.steampowered.com/app/328760/

Edit:  And picked up something called Depths of Fear that I placed in my Wishlist a while ago.  While it has mixed reviews, for about $1 I figure it's worth a shot.  The soft pretzel I got a Wawa today was more than that.

SanctuaryRPG Black Edition.

I can't wait for the long-promised Linux port.  It reminds me of the very old 8-bit game Dungeon which I absolutely loved as a nipper.

They just finished pouring the foundation on my new home. Won't be finished until mid March or so. Gaming dollars will be scarce as hell for the forseeable future. Looks like a couple of print-n-play solitaire games for the holiday season. I will try to spend under $50 for the next three months on games...total. Normally, my budget would be in the several hundreds.   :(

Yeah but what would be worse- just a few games and a brand new cozy house to play them in... or lots and lots of games and no home to play them in?

I am largely on the fence over a few titles. Over the last decade I have become a Steam Whore of sorts, building a gaming library off of deeply discounted titles that I thought I was interested in, only to wind up with dozens not installed and many others never played.  :o

My wish list on Steam had over 20 titles in it and each time I got an itchy trigger finger on the buy button I forced myself to go watch YouTube videos of gameplay which ended up thinning the heard.
The five games I have left on the wish list I cannot bring myself to purchase yet.

One big factor in my hesitance is that I know the Steam sale ends Dec. 1, and later in the same month they will launch their massive end of year sale. I would hate to buy something now at 50% off if it will be available three weeks from now at 75-90% off (even if I never install or play it).  :idiot2:

The Matrix sale is somewhat interesting; however the only thing that stands out for the moment is War Plan Orange at a nice $9.99 price point.  :D

Hey JD, what do you think of F1 2015 for 50% off?

I only finished half of 2014 and don't know that I need a whole new season.  Price is still a bit high for a maybe...Steam reviews are really bad.  I seem to remember you grooved on it though...

OMG! I am NOT ALONE! :2funny:

Recently got Fortress Craft, Stranded Deep, Anti Squad, Skyrim Leg'y ed, and goat simulator on Steam for my son and daughter. I thought about the Attila TW series, but there were tons of BAD reviews, which put me off and anyway I have Rome 2 TW, and apparently that is better? If Attila is as good as I was hoping it would be then someone please let me know ASAP before the sale is over. Thanks.  O0

You know the damage is bad when you have actually lost track of all that you have bought.

That I know of, there is:

War Plan Orange and Eapana 1936 from matrix.

Revised list

ARK Survival, MXGP, ARM Planetary Prospectors, Age of Empires III complete, stronghold crusaders II ultimate collection, Masterplan, Lego Star Wars Saga, Hegemony III, Omnipresent, Skyshine's Bedlam, Sky Rogue and Transcendence Part I...Steam makes it too damn easy. :(

Star Trek Fleet Command on Gog.

Destiny Taken King legendary edition on PS4.

Whelp, my total damage was:

Total War: Attila plus Culture Packs (but not Charlemagne it turns out)
SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition
Depths of Fear
CK2 DLCs: Charlemagne, Early Western Clothing Pack, Dynasty Shields Charlemagne
Mount and Blade: Warband Viking Conquest Reforged DLC

Overall spending was about $40 so not too bad.  I'm holding out for the Attila Charlemagne DLC until Xmas time I think.

I eyeballed a few other games, but I think I've got enough here to keep me occupied for a while....at least until the next sale kicks in.

I bought Fleets of Sol for $2.62CDN after Steam wallet deductions.  I don't get it.  It doesn't seem like you really do anything as the player other than launch and recover fighters and decide when to jump out of a system.  It's still early access so hopefully they flesh it out but it seems really passive at the moment.

I've been watching this one for awhile from my wishlist and even at that price, I just didn't feel like making the commitment. I too hope it gets developed into something worthwhile, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Seems like it has been awhile since there has been any real development.

DC: Barbarossa (that count?  So, f-ing great...hard to oversell...)

Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings (boy wanted it)

Rocket League (ditto, but this is a truly remarkable product)

Five Nights at Freddy's (also ditto)

Graviteam Tactics: Operation Star and all the DLC (finally took the plunge, but the lack of MP has me crabby)

IL-2 Sturmovik: BoS (say what you will, but it's worth the price of admission to buzz the tractor factory...seriously)

JTS Kharkov '43 (NOT on sale.  I told Doug I wanted to try the "backhand blow", he sent me a turn, I was not sober, and so the least it seemed I should do was purchase the game, download it, patch it, update the graphics, and send him a turn).

Trying to gauge how much Attila differs from Rome II -- and especially, if it's better than Rome II.  Thoughts, anyone?

I like Rome II but wouldn't say I love it -- which is probably my view of most Total War games -- I think there's lots that they do that's very impressive, but for some reason, they never hold my attention for very long (probably because I find the strategic and diplomatic layers a little disappointing, and the games tend to devolve into repetitive battles that play out very similarly).

Anyway, if anyone here is of the mind that "Attila is similar to Rome II but better in some significant ways," I'd love to hear it (as I'll likely pick it up on sale if that's the case).  If the consensus is "Attila is good, but mostly more of the same re: Rome II" then I think I'll skip it....
Title: Re: Holiday Damage Thread
Post by: Gusington on November 30, 2015, 11:42:57 AM
Attila's dynamics are very different. To simplify it, in Rome II, the player is charged with building a large empire. In Attila, the player is charged with survival. And it's damned difficult!

On Attila: difficult to keep me playing repeatedly to try to finally score a victory. Fun enough to have me stare at the monitor like a drooling idiot as I tech up my units and cities. Exciting enough to have me play night after night and frustrating enough that I throw beer cans at the same monitor when almost every in game faction jumps on top of me and ransacks what's left of my one province.

So, in closing, Attila is like a hot bitchy girlfriend.

Rome II is more accessible and easier to win, but I keep going back to Attila a. because I like the time period more & b. the game is the PC gaming version of a sultry minx.

Plus with Age of Charlemagne coming out and the game dynamics changing again, I may have a renewed chance to win a campaign in a newer Total War game.

So far, the damage is:

Middle Earth: Shadows of Mordor and all DLC for 13.50
Strategy Heroes Bundle off of BundleStars for 2.70 or so
(contains Prime World: Defenders, Heroes of Annihilated Empires, Knights and Merchants, Runespell: Overture, Eador: Genesis, Hoard Complete Pack, Puzzle Kingdoms, and Frozen Synapse Prime)
Command Ops 2 Commander Pack for 60

I will also probably pull the trigger on Endless Legends bundle ($20), AJE: Parthian Wars ($10), and Hannibal: Rome and Carthage in the Second Punic War ($10).

I still also might get Combat Mission Battle for Normandy Big Bundle ($105), but am waiting to see if there's any kind of Holiday sale first.

Now the question is -- Witcher 3 for $30? Very much tempted although I'm just not sure I'm going to actually play it...  Plus, potential for highly impressionable 5-year-old daughter wandering by at the most inopportune moment is high with this one...

Alea Jacta Est DLC - Parthian War and Hannibal
Age Of Wonders 3 DLC - Eternal Lords
Endless Legend DLC - all of it

@Jarhead Destiny Taken King Legendary collection is a great improvement to the original, I was bored with the original after 15hrs but have sunk a couple of hundred hours into Destiny since I bought Taken King, my username there is the same as here if you ever need an extra hand on your fireteam.

Amazon also had some amazing deals on boardgames so I picked up a few.

So, in closing, Attila is like a hot bitchy girlfriend.

Rome II is more accessible and easier to win

So what sort of girlfriend is Rome II, or was that indeed a continued analogy?

What do folks think of Convoy?  At $7.50 hard to go wrong, but wondering if it has any Grog devotees...

(would also be curious to hear Gus's answer to Father Ted's question   ;))

Being somewhat conversant with the Warhammer Fantasy world via the 2nd edition rpg and completely dense regarding Mordheim's offerings, I wonder if you are given the thrills-n-chills of random chargen (from all of the glorious tables) that WHFRPG offered up when it comes to making characters up for the computer game.

If so, then this is one game I need to pick up at some point in the future.

Rome II is more accessible, easier to win and much more traditional in its victory conditions. A better all around girlfriend.

Emotionally or physically?  Actually, perhaps we shouldn't take this any further...

Also, what do people think of Convoy?   :P

I finally went with the Steam DC Bundle - Warsaw to Paris and Case Blue for $29.99 and I picked up a campaign DLC pack for Space Hulk for $1.59.

There are still some Matrix only titles that I have my eye on but I am waiting to see what rolls out with the Steam Christmas sale at the end of the year before I fork out anymore credit card debt.

Not bad, but I never have understood the Kris Kristofferson liking; Ernest Borgnine as, "Dirty Lyle," I can see, but otherwise, those dudes were just cashing in on the whole "trucker," thing of the late 70's.

Anyhoo, this is Dammit Carl and I got wall-to-wall bears in my rear-view with a bear in the air at my 12; we're gonna hit that toll gate doing 98, so boys let them trucks roll and I'll catch you on the flip side.

Rome 2 is the girlfriend with the slightly large thighs and smallish boobs that's a great cook and doesn't bitch when you go out with friends. Attila is the dumb, hot chick you cheat on her with. And then feel guilty about it the next day. But you know she will forgive you for it once you've told her how beautiful she is. Tough choice.  :coolsmiley:

Ooh, I'm gonna be famous!  What's this "Mordheim" stuff then?

Convoy - I haven't put a great deal of time into it but I do think it's rather good.  Everyone compares it to FTL which is a fair comparison, but Convoy gives you more control in battles.  Combined with the ability to pause while issuing orders, frankly I'd give the edge to Convoy.  The interface is intuitive and also immersive, and the RNG doesn't seem quite so harsh in Convoy.  It definitely gets a thumbs-up from me.

So far, I've picked up

Train Valley, this is really fun quick puzzle game.
The DLC's for Endless Legend I didn't already have.
Colonial Conquest for nostalgia's sake, haven't tried it yet though.

I'm think about getting Star Hammer, anyone have any opinions on this?

Lastly, Jarhead, have you tried SFC yet?  I have the disks and it locks up after a few seconds on Windows 8, haven't tried it on 10 yet.  I've also read some messages on GOG that their version may have the same issue. Thanks.

I've tried multiple different titles in the SFC series on Win7-64.

The only one that has worked perfectly, with no crashes or freezes, has been the digital version of SFC2 Orion Pirates.  Even the newly modified version of SFC2 EAW has problems which haven't been fixed yet.  I suspect picking up an old physical copy of OP, or any others, will still cause problems due to any disk-check DRM + modern OSes.  But good news!  You can get a d/l and key on the cheap.

I picked it up at Dynaverse for $6:

http://www.dynaverse.net/market/5-star-trek-starfleet-command-orion-pirates.html

Been running just fine on my Win7 notebook and a desktop PC, both with Nvidia cards.   O0

There's no telling now long GOG will milk the original SFC Gold for, before they put up EAW & OP.  So I didn't wait.  Orion Pirates is pretty much the same as EAW but used a slightly newer DirectX IIRC (probably why it still works okay), has slightly improved ship textures & effects, and has additional pirate cartel campaigns along with the old dynamic campaigns for the EAW races.   I think they tweaked the random missions in the campaigns and the AI to be better, too, because I've found the computer-controlled opponents to be deadlier in OP.

I bought GalCiv3 a short time back, on sale, despite telling myself I'd never buy another GalCiv game after the previous two.

Started it twice.  Froze and/or crashed both times shortly after getting into the game.  Uninstalled.

Lessee...

Total War ATTILA plus DLC (minus Charlegmagne)
Witcher 3
Borderlands 2
FTL

For a tidy $75 or so...

Was very tempted by CMANO for $40 but still not quite in the sweet zone price-wise where I can't resist. Also haven't yet picked up DC Barbarossa although will at some point I'm sure....

Mostly thought I"m still spending all my time with Fallout 4. Amazing if flawed game...

There are tons of crash reports with the same M.O.  on the forum.  Definitely a known issue.

I will start it up again, eventually.  Not in any hurry until it's had more updates.   I'm just afraid that it's gameplay will end up being as shallow as the previous iterations though.

If gog has a big sale, I'll probably buy 4-5 things.

Gog Sale is upon us:
I bought:
Call of Cthulhu - both Adventure Games
Rebel Galaxy
Pacific General
all on sale

plus
Toonstruck which was in my cart

For another almost $30

This puts me at +$55 for the sale season!
