Title: Aliens: Fireteam
Post by: al_infierno on March 02, 2021, 03:40:28 PM

Looks like a Left 4 Dead style third person shooter set in the Aliens universe.  I'm a total sucker for anything Alien related, especially something that lets me irreverantly throw out quotes as they apply to my current situation.  (Can they cut the power and come out of the goddamn walls?  Time will tell!)  I'll almost certainly grab this at some point.

I too am usually a sucker for Aliens stuff. I played aliens colonial marines when it came out and stuck with it even though it was pretty broken.
I will probably get Aliens on 4k disc when it arrives.
But for some reason I cannot get excited about this title. I don't like FPS as much anymore and this game looks to be multi-platform third person. In it's favour it's coop and the subject matter is aliens.
I tried to like space hulk deathwing, but it just gets boring fighting waves. Left for dead games just bore me these days. This is why I am also not that excited about the new 40k wave based game, Dark Tide. Because the bots just look like zombies under a different name with no real new experience or learning to be had. Vermintide 1 & 2 I think were the ones that kinda put me off, the whole ring the bell for a wave of enemy seemed kinda disingenuous.

I have fireteam on my wishlist now. Hope it works out.

I friggin' knew it. Why I would have expected anything otherwise...I dunno?

This game has Aliens...."and that's about it."

If you can round up a pair of Alien-loving friends and don't mind replaying a samey collection of missions, then Aliens: Fireteam Elite can be fun in bursts. If you're embarking on this bug hunt solo, then I'd suggest reconsidering.

https://www.pcgamer.com/aliens-fireteam-elite-review/

A fun and flexible swarm shooter that's a little too reliant on being played alongside friends.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021-08-23-aliens-fireteam-elite-review-throwaway-thrills

Aliens: Fireteam Elite is exactly what it says on the tin. Stuffed with guns, gadgets, and plentiful alien goo, it's a frenetic cooperative firefight against some of sci-fi's most iconic monsters in an all-new tale that takes us beyond the original trilogy. No, it's not the most sophisticated shooter, and no, its truncated runtime is unlikely to occupy you for more than a couple of nights, but it's an unashamedly good romp that'll hopefully satisfy your Ripley power fantasies, too.

https://www.pcinvasion.com/aliens-fireteam-elite-review/

Entertaining to play, but light on content and too repetitive in spots, Aliens: Fireteam Elite isn't without its charms. But the purchase price is a little high for what you get.

Recurring statement in the reviews : only for co-op.

Ouch...

At least Space Beast Terror Fright is still a pretty good Aliens style shooter.

Good news is that it appears to be on MS game pass, so I'll probably check it out.

Sorry fellas...this is NOT on MS game pass.  :'(

Steam reviews are...mostly positive!

By and large, most content reviewers are describing it as dull, repetitive, and lacking in content, yet still rating it overall above average. I keep coming back to videos of gameplay and come away convinced that I'll play this for 10 minutes and then never play it again...but then I look at the steam reviews and on average, they are "very positive". It either says that my gaming habits and expectations have changed, or the average steam reviewer is of very below average intelligence and is very easily entertained.

^Both, most definitely.

That said I am still going to pick this up, when it's on sale for 5.00.

Yesterday I watched a few streams on Twitch and I got the idea that when 4 people, who know each other, played together they were having fun.
But watching the streams for more than a few minutes was boring.
For me as a single player guy this game is a definitive no.   It has non of the tension and atmosphere a game like Alien Isolation had.

And about Steam reviews : this player gave it a positive score and just mentioned one thing : 'At least it's not Colonial Marines'.
If you have low standards it is easier to be pleased.

I thought it was only 3 players, which is actually one of the major criticisms, even from some of those who claim to like it....

You are correct :

Q: Can this game be played and completed via solo play?
A: Each mission and mode can be played with two teammates or AI partners.

I didn't catch that from watching those streams.  There was so much chaos it must have looked like 4 players to me.

My buddy bought it and started playing on release.  He's already finished the story campaign.  He was a massive fan of the WWZ game by the same company.  His takeaway is, if you love the level grind and weapon customization of WWZ (which he does), you'll like this one a lot.  If you want a good, single player story experience, avoid it.  If you are looking for tonnes of variety in terms of maps and battles, wait for a sale.  He says it's bug free, runs well (but with a few frame rate drops), and the sound is good.  Says controls are a bit sloppy and he doesn't like that there's only one movement speed (he's one of those bastards who sprints halfway across the map as soon as you spawn because he's memorized the location of every loot box).  He also doesn't like how slow you move when you are aiming-down-sights.

Bottom line is: if you love grindy progression games and like Aliens, buy it now.  If you like squad based co-op shooters, wait for a sale.  If you're single player and want a good story, skip it.

Guess I'll skip it.

For now! I'll pay 5.00 for a less than stellar SP campaign and the off chance we can start a squad here  :dreamer:

There's isn't really a SP campaign according to him.  You go through the same missions as you would in the MP game but you get two of the discount androids from the Alien: Isolation game as teammates and they aren't really up to the task.  He also said the alien spawn points need work because they always show up at the same spot on the maps so it's too predictable once you've been through the levels a few times.  Needs more uncertainty in terms of when and where they come from.

We'll see if this is the game that turns me onto grindy progression system based 3rd person shooters, then.  :buck2:

Also, worth mentioning according to Steam reviews there's no ultrawide resolution support, which is a bummer.

First demerit for this game:  No Apone stache in the character customization.   >:(

What does he mean by this?  I assumed it meant no sprint button, but there is one.  Does he mean no abilities/mods/etc. to boost your speed?

I have to say I'm enjoying this a good bit in my first couple hours, and don't plan on refunding it.  It's on the janky budget side but the basic shooting and scooting and Aliens atmosphere is all quite fun.  It could use with a good bit of polish though.  The player models and animations are pretty wonky.   The aliens seem to follow fairly predictable paths most of the time.  The devs need to take a note from the Killing Floor playbook and have the enemies move in weird ways to distract and disorient you and occasionally sneak up behind you.  Sometimes I get "got" by an alien jumping out of a spawn-vent or something, but that's not as fun as getting startled by a bug that just danced around your peripheral until it was suddenly in murder range.

I can see how someone who's big on modern 3rd person shooters wouldn't like this game for being janky and not bringing anything particularly new to the table beyond the IP, but I'm digging it for its simplistic fun and Aliens references.  I like that you can swap out the shotgun for the old Ithaca that Hicks uses in the movie.  For that matter, I appreciate that the default shotgun is just a regular-ass modern military shotgun and not some fancy stupid futuristic looking shotgun like most of these games use (including Alien: Isolation).  These devs get that shotgun technology does not exactly have anywhere to go with regards to aesthetic.

Overall, I'm fairly happy with it but if they don't implement some polish and more interesting enemy AI, I don't see it being more than a "kill a couple hours with some beers" type of game.

I'll follow up my last post by saying it definitely feels like a mediocre game overall carried by its IP.  That said, for what it is, I'm digging it and I think if they polish it up and add more, it could be a solid KF/L4D style game.

Oh, as a pretty casual gamer it's keeping me satisfied difficulty-wise, and I like the challenge cards you can use, like removing the HUD or adding an overlay that makes it look like the camera feed screens in the APC.

I wrote a steam review that sums up my thoughts:

QuoteI can't recommend this game to anyone who's not a die-hard fan of Alien/s. Even if you are, I would recommend checking out Space Beast Terror Fright before you get this game.

SBTF is janky and low budget, but at least it provides everything I'd expect from a genuinely terrifying Aliens experience. You navigate dimly lit randomly generated space ships in search of power breakers (in case they cut the power) and map rooms (so a teammate can guide you through the labyrinth to your objective like Lt. Gorman in Aliens) and coolants to disable the power core, which you need to shut down and then escape the ship before it blows up. There are breaches that increase in number as the game goes on, and if you slip up, the Xenos kill you instantly with permadeath to your consistent gear and achievements. The basic gameplay loop really nails the feeling of being a fire team in the Aliens universe.

Fireteam Elite does nothing like that. It's a generic team shooter carried by its IP, and while it's not a bad game by any means, it's disappointing in comparison to lower budget indie projects. I'll be playing it more as it's a fun game, but it'd be generous to simply call it "unimaginative" beyond the implementation of the IP. The best I can say for it is that it's not terrible like Colonial Marines.
