There is a bonus feature on Platoon of the making of the movie. They went through a simulated infantry training in the Phillipines. Oliver Stone wrote the script based on his experience in vietnam. He pushed the actors into a situation where they become like the characters. Anyway, Dafoe is very relaxed and likeable in this movie. He is totally at ease in front of the camera. There is no sign of the 'angry man', he actually smiles a lot.
