Kinda surprised this has never happened before. A massive container ship has put a cork in the Suez Canal (https://finance.yahoo.com/news/suez-canal-blockage-ease-tomorrow-112737155.html). Hopefully they can get things moving again quickly. Thanks again Slo Joe for shutting down the Keystone XL. :idiot2:

Canal might be blocked for weeks. :o
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-56522178
A lot of shipping goes through the canal. I wonder how this will affect world wide supply chains?
Bitcoin has tanked because of it and oil is skyrocketing.
Lots of spicy memes about the ship captain being a (hot) woman. I thought they used local pilots in the canal though.
I was going to post a link to a YouTube shitpost about it but on second thought, probably best not to.
Welp. Wonder how this is going to work it's way into conflict planning by nations from here forward.
-positive that Iran sees this and is like, "Aw shit! Awesome! We got any large ships we can use to do this? How 'bout enough explosives? Nice."
The ship captain is a hot woman???
Possibly. Might just be the 4chan nerds jumping to conclusions.
NSFW video
If that is her then I can verify that she is indeed hot (hawt).
But possibly a not very good ship's captain.
Still, gotta wonder at whomever was driving the thing thinking that taking a right turn in what is arguably one of the longest straightaways out there was a good idea.
Blaming the GPS, I bet.
"I swear, it said there was a turn here!"

Two days agoin, I read on Zero Hedge that the accident was caused by a steering casualty (NFI) while while there were high winds in the area. I can't confirm that, but I could see that such a sequence of events could cause an accident. The question in my mind is if the ship had a standby/emergency steering station, and whether it was operating and manned. These are stations that have a direct hydraulic connection to the rudder and are typically located far aft and below the waterline. In USN ships, we did, and we had them manned during evolutions such as this.
Addendum: Apparently the wind was gusting as much as 30 mph at the time. While that is significant, especially given the sail area of the M/V
Ever Given, those winds are not so high as to be the sole cause of the accident. So, I'm guessing either a steering casualty, and/or negligence in addition to the wind.
FWIW, USN ships always had a canal pilot onboard for the entire length of the transit. I assume merchant traffic must similarly have a qualified pilot onboard.

Jeez. Can't even imagine the complexity involved with steering such a huge beast not to mention just how much room is needed to do so.
While searching for more info on this incident, I've come across some websites that show all kinds of marine traffic. Don't think military traffic shows up, but, damn, there are a hell of a lot of ships floating around.
You can search for the Ever Given and zoom in...even shows the support ships trying to refloat her. Very cool.
https://www.radar-tracker.com/marine_traffic/
https://www.marinevesseltraffic.com/
They showed the steering track as reported by GPS on that video I posted. It starts at around the 3 minute mark. I readily admit to knowing nothing about how these ships usually manoeuvre but the track looks very odd to me. I wonder if the system was buggered because some of the turns seem like they'd just be wasting fuel. (and seem very, very tight. Not sure what the map scale is though so that might just be an illusion)
The ship could have been in a "holding pattern" waiting its turn to enter the canal. I'm guessing ships just can't enter/leave the canal willy nilly. There must be some kind of traffic control similar to air traffic.
...still, an interesting pattern ::)

She is definitely hot (and I wouldn't mind serving under her :-"), but she is not the captain of the
Ever Given.

Whenever I have transited the canal, it is done in "convoys" of ships. Everyone going south anchors off Port Said, and everyone going North anchors in the Red Sea. At the appropriate time, the "convoys" all enter the canal. If I recall correctly, the North-bound convoy anchors in the Great Bitter Lake to allow the southbound convoy to pass through (although I may have that backwards). I haven't seen the video of the "rapid swings" that Silent Disapproval Robot mentions, but if it is occurring in the Red Sea, it may be the ship swinging at anchor.
from what Ive read it would seem that the ship did have pilots on board. besides the high wind there are also reports of a sandstorm of whatever strength. all around just a giant cluster....

That is Nuts, literally. ;D
The ship was in a holding pattern (was in a zone with no anchoring allowed).
They wanted to make a four leaf clover figure but were allowed to enter the canal just before starting the fourth leaf.
Or the third, I guess. :DD
...and she's a floating. Traffic is resuming.

Might want to hang on to those for a bit longer SirSlash. While the Suez is opened back up, apparently there is a shipping container shortage that may cause another TP shortage (https://www.rt.com/business/519274-world-toilet-paper-shortage/). #:-)

Egypt's bill for refloating the Ever Given comes due. (https://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/ny-egypt-wants-one-billion-ever-given-ship-blocked-suez-canal-20210401-bp33jgdm6vgopp6p3oxegrci2q-story.html)
...and it seems the ship was "speeding" (https://www.businessinsider.nl/the-ever-given-container-ship-was-reportedly-travelling-faster-than-suez-canal-speed-limit-before-running-aground/) when the accident happened.
:wow: :hide:
Man. I'm now glad I just owed a couple of hundred in taxes to the Man.
As Steve58 posted before they blamed the wrong person. Now she gave an interview to the BBC.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-56615521
Marwa Elselehdar: 'I was blamed for blocking the Suez Canal'
News had broken about a huge container ship, the Ever Given, that had become wedged across the Suez Canal, bringing one of world's major shipping routes to a halt.
But as she checked her phone, online rumours were saying she was to blame.
"I was shocked," says Marwa, Egypt's first female ship's captain.
At the time of the Suez blockage, Ms Elselehdar was working as a first mate, in command of the Aida IV, hundreds of miles away in Alexandria.
Rumours about Marwa Elselehdar's role on the Ever Given were largely spurred by screenshots of a fake news headline - supposedly published by Arab News - which said she was involved in the Suez incident.
The doctored image appears to be from a genuine Arab News story, released on 22 March, which profiles Marwa's success as Egypt's first female ship captain. The picture has been shared dozens of times on Twitter and Facebook.
Several Twitter accounts under her name have also spread false claims that she was in involved with the Ever Given.
Marwa Elselehdar, 29, told the BBC she has no idea who first spread the story or why they did it.
"I felt that I might be targeted maybe because I'm a successful female in this field or because I'm Egyptian, but I'm not sure," she said.
Though the academy only accepted men at the time, she applied anyway and was granted permission to join after a legal review by Egypt's then-President Hosni Mubarak.
During her studies, Ms Elselehdar says she faced sexism at every turn.
Now why would anybody in the Middle East prefer to blame a women L:-) :uglystupid2: ?
So...who's the actual captain?

So...who's the actual captain?
Possibly someone named "Chris Cillard" as mentioned in this article:
Quote
According to USA Today, Rabei said that the captain of the Ever Given, Chris Cillard, has not cooperated with the investigation into how the ship became stuck while passing through the canal last week.
https://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/ny-egypt-wants-one-billion-ever-given-ship-blocked-suez-canal-20210401-bp33jgdm6vgopp6p3oxegrci2q-story.html
Odd thing is, every other article I've seen says the captain has yet to be identified, but most are saying the captain is not being cooperative or answering questions, etc.
Nothing quite like making things worse for yourself by not cooperating :/
So, posted news stories can be just.... made-up?!? :o Good thing that kind of stuff can't be pulled around here. ::)

You did notice that it took less than a day to discover ?
You did notice that the 'news' was spread on social media (mostly Twitter & FB) and not on mainstream media ?
Oh well then. That makes it OK then, I suppose. ::)
The Ever Given has finally left the Suez Canal (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/ever-given-leaves-suez-canal-more-3-months-after-blockage-n1273200). I can bet the next time she sails/tries to sail through the canal, it'll be a major sphincter tightening moment for her captain.
What is it with this shipping line that their ships keep getting stuck? L:-)

Pilots with drinking problems?
Gorgo? ???
These days, it's more likely that they're trying to text while they're piloting the ship. Or playing Wordle.
