The production values could have been higher but it more than covered my gripes.

Funny. Sad but funny. Has it REALLY been 20 years? Damn! I gotta finish one campaign of CMBN at least before I die.

Well I could pull it apart line by line but other than a lot of bitching about not getting everything for nothing couldn't see any point to it. And posted by someone whos agenda is boringly familiar.

FFS its not even funny. there is nothing so unfunny as someone who quite smugly thinks they are being but failing spectacularly.

But its one joke .. Why didn't I get the whole war with every nation and vehicle - even the Brazilian Expeditionary, force for 30 bucks ?
Each to their own I guess.

Just some Saddo whos never produced a game in his life talking a load of crap about those who have.

I wasn't really paying attention to that part. I focused on the part about the ridiculous DRM that has required me to start at least 3 helpdesk tickets since the initial release of CMBN, just to play the games that I paid for. I don't care how friendly they are. I shouldn't have to be talking to them! Certainly not in the age of Steam and plenty of other distribution platforms that are almost as convenient.

Is that the "boringly familiar agenda" you were referring to?

Don't know why you would have to produce a game to have a valid opinion. I'm not involved in building houses or in the making of anything currently in my house. Doesn't mean I shouldn't have an opinion on any of those things. I can't say whether I agree or disagree with his opinion since I only played the original CM but if you want to exclude those not involved in making these games then you should exclude 99% of the critical messages on these forums.

These things take time young mirth

There are traditions to uphold

The gauntlet is thrown, next there should be pricing, drm, graphics, a small company can only do so much, Steve grammont, the forums, updates not been updates and price gouging - then and only then can we move onto the next level

I don't have an issue with the DRM either. I have Shock Force, Normandy, Red Thunder, Fortress Italy, Black Sea and Final Blitzkrieg, all have worked flawlessly for me. That doesn't make me blind to the buzz in the community, though, or unable to find humour in some of the discussions.

Well said. And naturally, if "Zulu1966" likes a game, any critical observation or humorous aside regarding it must also be ruthlessly deleted, since he is obviously right, and everyone else is just as obviously wrong.

To be clear, the video offers no opinion and gives no advice on whether anyone should buy CM. BFC has been very good about providing full-featured demos for their products. I gave up on trying to tell people what flavor of ice cream they are "supposed" to like a long time ago.

Not to worry, you're off the hook. One has to be capable of recognizing humour in order to appreciate it and after years of enduring your dim-sighted commentary here, that is a standard no one would dream of holding you to.

I prefer the hate directed at Rome II.  That was truly baffling.  A high point in pure hate. The hate directed at CM is pretty thin and watery compared to the full-strength hate that Rome II could have sent its way.

Put me down as a fanoi of most games.

There was so much wonderous hate that it was poured out in many a haar-haar-haar-ing video by screamin' Abe and Howling Haar-haar- Howie and so on.  "And look at this...trees!  Those are Trees!  They  look upside down! or are they little clouds?  I can't tell. Haar-haar-haar."

Really, I've never seen anything quite like it.  And I like FOGII and Rome II both, of course.

Mutually exclusive. FoGII has no map campaign but some like the the battles of FoGII better (covers more armies and eras)

Courses entirely for horses, but, as an MP game, the battles in Rome simply aren't capable of giving me the same experience as FoGII.  Their pace, rhythm, and interactions have been poor since Rome I, despite all my attempts to love them.

No one with eyes disputes that Rome's the better looking game, but FoGII is good looking enough for my needs and the wargame it gives is unequaled in the era.  It's the only credible successor to the Great Battles games released by Interactive Magic.

I didn't think of comparing FOGII to RomeII.  I've been mentally tallying it against the Hoplite Board game.  I think FOGII is a more convincing hoplite game.  The campaign I accidently started in FOGII with Umbrian Hoplites is very neato (and the Samnites just joined up with their swordsmen -- unexpected and very neato).

^ In a world where FoGII exists I no longer need R2:TW, but I wonder if anyone's gone so far as to commit its sins, whatever they might be, to video...

It still goes on - for all they did for Rome 2 and all the good work with warhammer if you posted a 'new tw game coming' in certain places you'd still get 'hurrrr hurrrr do they still not climb ladders to get to your settlements'

Well done for that you total war Hermann because one ever fixed rome 2 in the last 10 years

<== Is CM fanboi.

It is a tribute to just how great CM is that a) it's been around for 20 years and b) it inspires this sort of weird.

I'm offended that I wasn't mentioned!

Funny. Sad but funny. Has it REALLY been 20 years? Damn! I gotta finish one campaign of CMBN at least before I die.

No, it hasn't. I remember damned well when Combat Mission came out. I had 3 months off between taking the bar and starting my 1st lawyer job, and praise the lord, my mail-order copy of CM1 was sitting on my doorstep my first morning off! That was approximately June 2000.

That was when the first full version was released to the public. A "public beta" demo was released in the fall of '99. It might have been as long as a year before that when Moon and Fionn made an Alpha AAR with screenshots and descriptions.  That still doesn't get things back to '97 but it's getting close. Dorosh likes to track these kinds of things so he probably remembers earlier stuff than I do.

I played that demo so long ago and immediately fell in love with the game.  :smitten:   And it fell in love with kicking my ass on a regular basis. Twenty years of my being a battered spouse.

I found my CMBB and CMAK disks, strategy guide, manual and companion book yesterday when sifting through my items at the attic.
There is snow outside right now and I am pretty sure there was snow when I first played CM ever. Nostalgia hit me with a sledgehammer there. All those mods I found a few days later, oh my!
The game could be transformed in a complete winter themed version. Awesome!
Looking at CMRT now its awesome to see where the games have come!

I was always very proud that my forum number was <200.

No, that demo shattered my head.  Times and technology change so much, but I find it hard to imagine any game having an effect on me like CM:BO did.

I was there early. I remember that AAR and being completely blown away. 3-D Half tracks traveling down that snow covered road taking evasive action. No other game captivated me like it. So incredibly groundbreaking. I must have played the Beta Demo 300 times before the release.

Sadly though, my enthusiasm has waned and CM no longer is anything that excites me, whatever iteration. These days I prefer Graviteam Tactics. It's realism, beauty, and immersion in this genre is second to none these days imo. When I think of CM, I remember it as a girl I once was crazy about that now does nothing for me. I have grown and she has aged not so good. Memories are all that is left. Good memories but, memories just the same.

I loved Cmbb, however, all the updates for the other games has turned me off.  I'll stay with Steam and Matrix games.

I thought CMBB was the pick of that litter too. My all time favorite late East Front game with so many great battles included. A superb effort.

Say what you will about Battlefront and the current state of things, CMBB is one of the greatest computer wargames of all time.

Loved the first two.  I got the demo from the PC Gamer disk and played it 300 times.  And then my interest waned.  I hardly played the last one I bought.

I moved on but I still have fond memories.

The original with the scenarios, especially meeting engagements was wonderful.

And Cracker Jack is evil.  Nothing is harder to extract from your back teeth.  That stuff is a combo of superglue and cement between your teeth.

Absolutely. Those guys redefined the genre. I have no animosity towards Battlefront unlike others here. I just never got into the CM2 engine and today I'm just not sure I like to micromanage as much as I used to. GT:MF, while a completely different beast with its own shortcomings, has done some unique and groundbreaking things themselves.

I think I was #64 or somefink like that.  It was what I'd always dreamed of....ASL without needing to consult the rule book.......

Me too. And I'll never forget nearly peeing my pants laughing the first time I heard the Americans yell, "Let's get the hell outta here" as a Tiger tank approaches.  :DD

Joined in late 99, but had been keeping an eye on it since the "Computer ASL" days. The demo blew my mind. Bought multiple copies of all three of the original Combat Mission games and gave them to my wargaming buddies. Haven't bought a thing since they went to the DRM scheme.

Just for kicks you should download the 3 WW2 demos.  They're free, you don't need the DRM and you can get a lot of replay out of them. Hours and hours of game play without spending a penny. Play'em until you feel you've had your fill or decide you don't like the engine and then move along.

I was a late comer, my forum number had 4 or 5 digits IIRC. I heard about the game from someone posting at my canadiansoldiers.com website's forum, and downloaded the demo to take a look. I was too dense to 'get' what I had to do in the demo, and actually deleted it. Something possessed me to go back and try a second time a few months later and I was hooked. The original games were extremely elegant, and you could get a great deal out of the engine (random maps, random battles, decent equipment and force matchups with array of different equipment etc.) with amazingly little work.

The new engine - they're trying hard, and some of that original magic is there. I'm very impressed with the number of quick battle maps that ship with new titles; they're consistently interesting and of high quality. Just seems like they're chasing a bunch of different directions at once now - upgrade the engine, incorporate old features that never made it into the new code, introduce new theatres (families), bring all the original nationalities from the World War II titles into those families. It's certainly ambitious. It's much harder for the fan community to contribute, though because the scenario building process is more labour intensive (you could select a random map in CMX1 and then tweak it and have something perfectly usable - in CMX2, you have to literally place every tree, shrub and rock on the map).

Always going to be hard for a sequel to outdo the original. CM probably comes the closest of any of the games I was familiar with - the oldies like M1TP, Red Baron, etc., all suffered when rebooted.
