I suspect that I have a problem with Internet Explorer, especially when it comes to downloading Windows updates and drivers - although I'm by no means an expert on the system.

Anyway, quite often, my system hangs up and fails to download and install widows updates (I'm running W7 btw and explorer 11). Once or twice I've had to run start-up repair in order to get the system up and running, and ran a full systems scan, which took about 15 hours. Also did reg scans and such via AVG tune-up. It never seems find any problems though.

The latest issue is that I brought an external portable HD with 1 Tb capacity so that Mrs.B and I could back stuff up. It loaded the drivers and works fine on her PC, (she also has W7) but on mine, it does not even detect it as new hardware' let alone install the drivers.

I know the USB ports are ok because it detects other hardware, phone, digi-cam and kindle without any fuss, so I'm now totally baffled.

Can any of you techie guys offer me any advice please?

So it doesn't even acknowledge the usb connection?

Have you tried another sub port or manually adding a device?

Do you actually have admin rights on your username?

I've tried different USB ports - same result. Not sure how you manually add devices, unless its via device manager?

Yep - and again, I have had no issues with other devices.

Hmm. Maybe this is a Windows problem. I followed the directions, but when I right-clicked the 'manage' bit, not only did it not open, but now the START menu is frozen.

yup - I had to shut down via task manager to un-freeze the start menu
