I'm stashing this here until I have a chance to come back and fully digest it all and offer more robust thoughts and comments.

I'll say this, though - anyone who wants to reflexively bash the media is welcome to do so, but with the caveat that I'll bet 90% of the stuff that's worked for these guys to access their data would've also worked to access yours. 
The journalists described in the article are stupid, they're untrained, and here's hoping this article helps spur some corrective action.
