It's looking rather biblical. I'll get my best torah scrolls out for this one.
I remember 1978 and a blizzard going through Northern Virginia that dumped close to five feet of snow.
O noes - a blizzard in winter? I'm going to laugh when only "60 centimeters" gets dropped.
Though, you know I hope you northern peeps and families stay safe. I don't care about the rest of the mouthbreathers up there. O:-)
guys, get the candles (oil lamps, generators) and the Board Games ready :o
They are calling for up to 36" in my area. People are already acting like its friggin Armageddon. I'll be surprised if we get more than 24".
I'm pretty sure the news isn't helping with all that craziness.
Step 1: The news reports SNOWMAGGEDON and people rush to the stores to buy out the place
Step 2: Businesses rake in the cash from easily-manipulated people thanks to the news' propaganda (and I'm sure it's ALLLL a coincidence if those same businesses advertise on the local news channel, too)
Step 3: Profit!
Wow. I'm starting to become a conspiracy nut. (https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.forumopolis.com%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Ftinfoil.gif&hash=33fbbd6cac3f0524ea516d903206ac0f847e399d)
They were calling for 1-2 inches in Columbia, SC back in January of 2000. 17 inches later... it took me almost 3 hours to drive the 4 miles home. I could've walked it faster (and probably should've). We opened the next morning, though!
That was the White Hurricane that dumped 26 inches on Raleigh, 14 inches on Charlotte, and 6 inches on Myrtle Beach. Yes, they were building snowmen on the beach below the Mason-Dixon line

I love a good snow storm. In the northeast it'll probably shut down the cities for a day or two then it'll be back to normal.
Buy a generator. Make sure you have at least one 4x4 in case you need to get out. I always have some extra foodstocks on hand, but it will be a good time to top off the butter and the milk and some bacon.
I always try to have a fireplace in my house - it makes passing these storms so much more cozy. Then kick back and relax. There's nothing anybody can do about it.
Oh, and make sure you're home well before the last nutjobs decide to evacuate wherever it is they're working and start clogging the freeways.
After 12" does it really matter anymore?

^I'll be right over.
Today, Opie was saying how much the news stations are full of shite and was taking bets on the number of inches of snow they'll get tonight. He said 16" but I think they went from 10" to 36". I get the feeling it will be a mediocre snowfall, but the news stations can't go back and admit they're wrong nor pass up the opportunity to get people stuck to their terrible newscasts.

The wind just started groaning here about an hour ago. Two hours ago I slipped and fell in my glacier of a driveway walking my in-laws giant Rottie...we have him until March as the in-laws are in Hawaii. He was not concerned and he was the only one who knew that I fell down. Been snowing lightly for a few hours. They are still saying my area will get at least a foot and a half. That's adequate for me.

Any snowfall would make Comrade de Blasio happy, as it reminds him of Mother Russia.
And this Officially Sucks.
How bad is it up there, mirth?
As advertised. High winds , heavy snow. 11F, windchill is -21.
Dayum. Stay safe and warm. Hope the electricity stays on, though I imagine your system is more robust than ours (our power goes out in broad daylight with nary a breeze).
NY news is now saying 4-9" of snow. Yesterday the asshats were reporting 3' or more...but of course they were. I was thinking that meant the entire storm was a farce but apparently that just meant that the brunt of it missed NYC.
Heaviest snowfall is supposed to be a corridor from the LI forks across the eastern 1/2 of CT and right over Boston all the way up the ME coastline. I'm on the western edge of that corridor and I think W8aminute is smack dab in the middle near Boston. Mirth, how far are you from the coast?

Yep. The top of the 4 is on my house.
Wow thats intense outside. My house is 8 miles north of downtown Boston right about where it says 30 inches and I believe it. Threw the dog outside and for the first time he refused to go he normally loves the weather in the worst elements (he is a 130lb Swiss mountain dog with a double fur coat) but this time he just came immediately right up to the back door and howled to be let back in.
I have set up a drop cam recording the last 24 hours I am going to try a timelapse see how it turns out. Thing is its pointing at the neighbours across the street and the 50mph wind gusts have whipped most of the snow off their house depositing it on mine...winter is a dick!

I've been shoveling for a bit and I've only made a dent (fucking snow thrower is seized up in reverse and I didn't get it to the shop yet). My oldest just had a seizure this morning. He's ok now (it didn't last long and he's sleeping it off) but I was damn worried about what do if the seizure got more serious. The plow trucks left a snow wall at the end of my driveway high enough to create a defensible rampart- great if you're facing a Zulu attack but not so great if you have to get a kid to the doctor or urgent care facility.
I just got a notice from an old employer that I still have pension money there (from 20 years ago) and they want me to take a lump sum rather than wait until I retire. I'm tempted to go for it despite the tax hit since it probably won't be much and a big down payment for a beefy 4X4 is really sounding good right now...
Scary shit Stagger. Hope your son remains okay.
My landlord just plowed, so I could get out if I really had to. No plans for that though. Kids are at their mother's. I have power and internet (knock-on-wood) so I am sorta working.
They're backing off a bit on the snowfall totals here now:

I saw that, too. Maybe it's a matched set (with spangles) for Mirth and Star.
Zircon encrusted even.
I'm pretty jealous of you northerners...I'm with W8 on this. I hate the South. I'd rather it be ball-freezing outside with snow on the ground and a titanic fireplace roaring than deal with 70-degree winters. (I know...waah.)
Move north then. I'm sure Toonces will give you a job shoveling his driveway and walk after he gets settled here.
Getting ready to strap on the winter gear and try the first cleanup. Maybe a lost cause but I have a limited window to do this while the boys are sleeping. Meanwhile the wife is stuck in the hospital for the last 24 hours as they didnt cancel any surgeries so if you need anesthesia for losing some fingers in the snowblower get your ass to Mass General Hosp cause apparently they decided to stay 100% open in a historic storm so they can keep doing money making elective surgeries ....MGH are dicks as well

Damn Mirth. When is it supposed to stop snowing up there? The big stuff is over and we're looking to get just a few intermittent flakes now.

Still pretty gusty here in Halifax but snow has changed over to ice pellets/rain. City pretty much closed down today but really not that bad. I managed to get out today for a meeting and my Civic did ok, although I would have preferred my wife's 4x4 SUV except its driveshaft is splayed out on the floor at our mechanic's garage. :tickedoff:

Supposed to stay steady through 10pm tonight. Then intermittent until at 2am Wednesday morning. We are in one of the heaviest snow bands.
Saying this is going to be a Top 5 storm in snowfall for Portland with potential to be #1 , topping the 32 inches that was dumped on us in Feb. 2013. Yay.
how high is it so far?
Officially we have 19 inches on the ground. It's blowing and drifting all over the place. So some areas are nearly bare while others have drifts several feet high.
I think we topped out at about 16-18 inches with the same pattern of some places being just a few inches and others as much as three feet. The drifts just happened to be on all the places that needed shoveling. :(
Good thing my neighbor helped me finish with his snowblower. I'm beat as it is.
Good that you guys still have power. And heat.
Luckily electricity never went out. The snow was very fine and didn't pile up on the branches over power lines, just got blown all over frakk and back. The local outages that did occur were likely due to the wind blowing down trees and to a dipshit or two running into a pole.

The last snowpocalypse saw a lot of busses and trains get stranded in the middle of the storm in NYC, where they sat for days. That's why the city shut everything down this time, despite the forecast being inaccurate.

Parts of NW Ohio had 14"+ of snow yesterday. We only had about 6-8 I think, but the winds kicked up and is causing bad drifting. All of the schools around here are closed, even some of the colleges.

It is now heading towards us in the NE...started snowing a few hours ago. No school tomorrow and 'work from home' for me. I will start a running list of Shining quotes.
So schools gets closed because of a Little bit of snow ? man I should have been going to school over there :)
You don't seem very awake.
We now have about 2.5 feet total. There's some kind of icy substance falling from the sky now.

^Exactly. The roads still aren't cleared from the last two storms.
There's ice and fire and brimstone coming from the sky right now by me. About a foot of new snow. Good skiing snow. That's on top of the foot of older snow. Not as much as Mirth or 'Wing but we're catching up and there are two more storms coming this week after this one.
Two guys on an ancient orange quad with a plow just rode by my house wearing goggles and leather helmets. Awesome.
was it a steam-powered quad? that'd be even more awesome

Awesome. Keep us posted.
LB. Where are you at.
Stay safe everyone. Staggerwing, glad your son's okay.
Meanwhile, I'm living in the Twilight Zone. For us Minnesotans, January/February has traditionally been equated with the terms "deep freeze" and "fuck-tons of snow". And while there is indeed a few days this week where the temp is only going to reach the upper teen's (and lows in the single digits), that's still not as cold as we're used to. As for snow, there's barely anything on the ground. ???

A new wargamer in the world! Woo-hoo! :D Good luck with that, sir.
And Gus, I keep imagining you outside in your many layers of protective clothing chasing after them yelling "wait up, wait up" like that little brother in A Christmas Movie. Then falling over and not being able to get up.

heh reminds me when one of my friends was studying in georgia many years ago.
at one point they had like a couple cm of snow and everyone freaked out, so when he was driving Down the road with a couple of his friends they got pulled over by the cops WHO told them they should be careful.
The driver told the cop he was from russia, my friend is from Denmark and the last guy was from sweden, so the cop just smiled and let them drive on :)
I'm on a call right now w/ a guy in Boston, obviously working from home. He's got about 5-1/2 feet of snow in his yard right now b/c of snow blowing around in their neighborhood and piling up against his hedges.

The winter before we moved from Boston we had enough snow to cover the chain link fence in the back yard. Not sure how many feet we got in total, but it was sufficient.
Yeah I would call it 'enough.'
My mailbox is on a 3.5 foot pole and from the drifts and plow it is just about buried.
And of course today got really busy with work on my crappy remote connection :/
Looking forward to clearing out the in-laws driveway of snow and ice at this point.
it's been over 90 minutes since we made a pole joke about Gus, and no Starfury sighting :'(
Damn it started snowing again. I thought it was over for today.
We're in the teeth of it right now.
Between the snowfall that started in the early AM and the second round that started about 3pm I think I'll have between a foot and a foot and a half average. Hard to tell for sure because of the drifts are much higher and I'm not averaging in the mini-himalayas that the town plows left at the end of the driveway.

Yeah, our official count is less than 18, but I think I'm being more than fair at 18 - it could be two feet. All I know is that there's snow everywhere and a lot of it.
I think we have about 10 now. Should finish with 15-plus.

There are a few idiots around here who run outside this time of year...I'm not one of them. I use a treadmill until it warms up. I hate it but it keeps the Homer belly away.
My in-laws are in Hawaii until March. I keep up their house while they are away. Part of that is clearing their drive and pathways. Then I go use their treadmill. Did that yesterday and I was about to pass out afterwards.
More snow and ice here tomorrow and possibly another foot+ over the coming weekend. Holy crap.

Why are people such assmunches today? A truck flipped over and blocked a lane this morning and some douchebag would not let me move over. It took more effort for him to be a douche than it woukd have for him to let me in. So I sped up and cut off the car in front of the douche. Jerkoffs.

damn this brutal winter!
Basically going to be light snow for 3 days straight (started Sunday). Total accumulation should be around another foot. Daytime high today should be around 15F. At no point in the 10-day forecast is the daytime high temp expected to go above freezing.
My front door isn't closing all the way now because ice has come down from the roof and warped the frame. Times like these when I am really glad I rent and can call the landlord to deal with it.
Redrum.
The past 2 weeks have been brutal.
No shit. Just had 2 hours of freezing rain and it just turned to snow. More snow on and off through tuesday night. Schools all cancelled again. WTF is this, third Monday in a row now?

I guess y'all don't want to hear about 73 and a light breeze here in Raleigh, eh? I was worried the chocolate bars I had in the back of the car were going to melt before I got them to the office.
^Piss off!
Home again with kids and Wife. Everyone mentally stable right now. I am starting to worry about ice dams on the roof though.
Other than that, working from home affords me the luxury of using Steam and Snipe Elite II and all dlc on sale for the next three hours for 10.00 dollah. So that's pretty cool :)
Sunshine and 10 deg C here today. Almost like spring has sprung!
FWIW, 73 was yesterday. We won't get past 60-62 or so today, and there are clouds everywhere.

Relief is on the way! Above zero temperatures here for the past few days.
Of course, freezing rain and sleet hit tomorrow...
I think winter has gotten bored with the Upper Midwest these last couple years, and that's why it's torturing all you poor SOB's in the Northeast now.
Our oddly mild winter here in MN continues. The temperatures are more or less back where they should be (i.e., freaking freezing out), but all we get for precipitation is an inch or two snow here, some freezing rain & sleet there. They actually had to cancel the last leg of a major snowmobile race last weekend because of there not being enough snow on the ground in my area.
It's weird. I'm torn between relief over the relatively gentle winter, and this bizarre sense of jealousy over what you guys further east are going through. I keep thinking, "Hey, that's *our* snow we're supposed to be getting!" :tickedoff: ::)

At least you apologized to MD. Few, if any, of us actually do that after dropping a pun bomb, which generally explodes messily with little accuracy. We do, however, endeavour to drop a pun that might take a minotaur two to actually 'get.' :)
Thanks, bes, your apology is accepted. Just don't find yourself in the company of those truculent reprobates. They are up to no good and you will only find a bad ending with them.
So, did I see this correctly on the news. The environmental left is blaming on man made climate change. Do to the very high amounts of snow, the city of Boston borrowed machines to melt the snow. What is the GHG out of these machines. Now, because of the new snow fall, they're thinking of dumping it into the ocean. Why isn't this being done already. Why do they need snow melting machines. Is the snow being melted in the machines coming out cleaner than when it went in as snow. If the snow naturally melts, will it go into the oceans cleaner than if they dumped it straight in.
^HA good question.
Con DON'T EAT SULLY!!
About 10 degrees here right now. We got a couple of inches more snow yesterday...we have some 4-5 foot high drifts. Makes for interesting driving.
My in-laws have been in Hawaii for the last month. I've been taking care of their house. Today while checking their boiler and some random rooms the wind began to howl. I could not help but feel like Shelly Duvall.

They need an EPA waiver to dump in the ocean. The waiver apparently isn't difficult to obtain and, by all accounts, Boston has done a terrible job removing snow from city streets. Boston probably should have asked for an ocean dumping waiver sooner, but to be fair there is quite a bit of trash and debris in the removed snow that would be best not dumped into the ocean.
My understanding is that the melting machines catch the trash and what is left is melt water. I think that is all being done on large empty parcels of land that the city refers to as "snow farms".
^Aka parking lots.
This was a near miss for Portland. Coastal towns 30 miles south of here got 2 feet of snow out of this storm. We got maybe 3 inches new snow. Granted we had several feet already, but I'm okay with not dealing with another 2-plus today. The wind is howling though.

I doubt Boston has them to spare for dumping snow.
They've been talking a lot about the snow in Boston on Dennis & Callahan (morning "sports talk"). I think it's being trucked to locations outside the city. D&C has been giving the MBTA a very hard time (the MBTA head resigned this week after a rather pathetic press confernence). Not sure where you are but once upon a time I lived in Boston. Prior to our moving there the Boston Harbor had been a great, polluted cesspool. (Our moving there did not change that - it changed before we arrived.) Once the Harbor was clean they decided to try and keep it that way. Laws were passed against dumping trash and even snow in the Harbor.
Plowed snow is rarely just snow. Typically it has been heavily treated with chemicals and/or salts to make it melt at a lower temperature. It usually also tends to pick up whatever road dirt there is, too (rubber from cars slowly wears off on pavement, oil, exhaust, et al).
So there is good reason for not wanting to dump snow in the Boston Harbor. Clearly, however, these are not normal times. I have no idea what kind of impact doing this will have on the Harbor, but I doubt it will be good for the critters that live there. The only question is, how bad will it be? It might be worth the risk.
It was roughly -10 F when I went outside this morning at 8am. That was the highlight.
Today my older daughter is having a delayed Valentine's party so I am sequestered in my study right now with my in-laws dog, venturing out only to go get pizzas and direct traffic.
Looking forward to 3pm when everyone gets the hell out of my house and then more snow later. If anyone has been deployed for a rescue mission please stop by my house. You know, the one with the snow on the roof, next to the tree.
Why can't Attila: TW be released today instead of tomorrow??

LB, I live in NW Ohio. When our snow melts it hits the storm drains, then the creeks, rivers and finally Lake Erie. The same things are in our melted snow as there is in Boston. So, under normal snowfalls, all of that stuff is in the melted snow in Boston also and getting in the harbor. Or are they treating all of their storm water also.

We're going to break our record low tonight.
Actually, let me clarify - we've
already broken our record low and it's not even 930pm yet. It's going to get colder overnight and we're expected to break the record by double digits.
We're supposed to have record breakers, too. The overnight low is forecast at 8 degrees. Tomorrow's high is 24. In contrast, by Saturday afternoon, it's supposed to be 50 degrees. Then back to the cold next week after the rain finishes moving through this weekend. Which could be snow if the cold air doesn't move out fast enough Friday. A cluster for our region. Nothing like what some of you have had, but, troublesome nonetheless for us.
This Feb is shaping up to be the 2nd coldest ever. Only one of the next 7 days is supposed to be above freezing, and we may be rewarded with freezing rain for it. Tonight and maybe tomorrow night are supposed to set record lows for these dates.

Oh look- is that a palmetto bug in your underwear drawer?
Where in FL, Star? My family all live in Sarasota now.
on side topic, while out on business in Tampa, I visited an old friend down outside of some place called Myakka (outside of Sarasota). First time I tried gator meat (fried), tasted like chicken mcnuggets and went well with beer. His buddy was a part time fireman who caught gators as well (or had caught a few).
I was just in SRQ last weekend but Im living in Palm Beach.
Dad used to go gator poaching as a kid down there (his dad was captain on a tug boat, immigrated from French Canada).
That was back when they were endangered, of course. (Or maybe before then, would've been the 50s.) Would never have believed myself they could be so incredibly un-endangered (and pestilent ;) ) that they'd be offered as relatively cheap food.
(They certainly aren't gormet. Chicken and lots of things are better. Gator isn't bad but :buck2: )
1-2 inches coming down right now, maybe more. They've already shut down most of the city. The problem today was the same thing that happened last year - it came in faster than they thought, and hit right as everyone was on the roads (this time it was morning rush hour) so there was no chance to get the plow trucks out.
The major surface streets were OK where cars were driving over them while it was coming down, and were able to wear tracks through the accumulation OK before anything piled up. But the side streets / neighborhoods were a mess b/c they're the last to get any plow attention and they lacked enough traffic to wear a track through the accumulation.
From Wade Ave to Page Road on I40-W (the main road in/out of RTP) - a stretch of about 6 miles - there were 7 different accidents this morning through 9am, and probably some more since then.
Almost 11am and it's warmed to 8F. It was -11F at 6am.

It was 25F here this morning with wind chill. We were just missed by a storm a county or two to the north, which froze shit over up there. In Huntsville (about 40 minutes north of me), it snowed. It's 36F now, supposed to get in the upper 40s. There will be people out there in parkas and gloves. ::)

Halifax had 60-75 cm of the white stuff yesterday and 25-30 cm on Sunday for a total of about 3 feet of blowing snow in less than a week. :'(
Another snow/rain storm is forecast for Saturday so I really need to get up on the roof and clear off some snow before then...but after I finish shoveling the driveway so that my wife has somewhere to park the car that she abandoned in a parking lot yesterday.
Right now I so envy you guys living in southern climes.
