I tried playing again and maybe it is just me, but I like everything about this game..... however, I get bored pretty quickly and totally lose interest.  The factions are cool, UI, etc.... but maybe I am going about it wrong, I just lose interest.

Every game appeals to some and not others. There isn't always a "why"....sometimes it just doesn't blow your skirt up.

Personally, I love this game. It is important to note that MANY of the options and things to do become available only after your progress through the tech tree. By the end you have dozens of building choices for a system, planet choices, tons of weapons for ships, tanks, political issues and many more laws to pass. I have not done it yet but apparently you can open up trade lines as different trade corporations pop up. You can make contract with them for different materials and they bring them to you if you establish a route for the I have not done it yet but apparently you can open up trade lines as different trade corporations pop up. You can make contract with them for different materials and they deliver it. I know you can blockade planets but I'm not sure if you can attack these "merchant fleets "
When you start out, first 25 turns is really just exploring, identifying good systems and getting basic tech

I really like the politics and the "probes" I like that I can l launch a probe in any direction and get a "feed" about what is there...they don't have to follow hyperspace lines either. Cool way to search for annoying pirates; launch 4-5 probed around an area.

I think there is definitely a whole lot more going on here than most 4xs

I think you are referring to Endless Space.... we are actually talking about Endless Legend  ;)

Maybe he's just got a REALLY advanced Vaulter faction?   ;D

The upgrade from Magic Sword to Destroyer is a son-of-a-bit_ch. Poor blacksmiths.

After buying this back in October for 79% off, I finally booted it up 4 days ago (since I found NOTHING in the winter sale to buy, other than a couple of titles over at Matrix). I am really impressed. This game is almost perfect - interface, graphics, AI seems good. I have been up until 3 AM to 5 AM four days in a row (great being retired). I am sure problems will arise, but rarely has a game performed like this for me. A contrast would be Civ6...dead AI makes it pretty much a sandbox.

Yeah.

I'd also add that the City-building, while it uses similar conventions to other titles, combines them in a way that is simply brilliant.  They just get the "organic city building" feeling just right, as that's always felt constrained in other games.

  • Each population (and you only start out with 1) is an automatic specialist (in Farming, Research, Production, etc.) and the bonuses they get there depend on both structures you've built and general Empire-wide bonuses you've invested in.
  • A city starts out also getting resources from its base and all adjacent tiles.
  • You can geographically expand your city to cover more hexes by building additional Boroughs (limited by population), but each time you do so it creates a bigger hit to your Approval.
  • You can "snake" to get scarce resources outside your initial city limits, but your City Center (and other Boroughs and Wonders) grow much more powerful (and happier!) when they are adjacent to 4 other City Centers or Boroughs.

This creates some delightful trade-off situations, where you have to figure out whether you want to "snake" to get a valuable resource or keep an integrated city structure that will maximize the actual production values and approval of your city center and boroughs.

I'm not sure these concepts are new to this title, but I've never seen it before.

I like the unit customization.

At the same time, there doesn't look like there will be much variety in opposing units to fight.  Each faction has.. what?  Five unit types?  And some minor factions, each with one unit type, of which you can optionally recruit a few with a research unlock.

Then you just build weapons/armor/trinkets to juggle the bonuses for a few stats on each.  *shrug*  They all still seem to work similarly in battles no matter how different they look.

Also enjoy the missions & such, but they seem very linear other than which specific hex you have to go to for some stages.

I dunno... it's theme is different enough to make it interesting, as with the other Endless games.  But I'm in doubt regarding the variety of experiences available throughout a campaign in Endless Legend.  Have tried starting a few campaigns and they always start feeling very samey in a short time.

Have I become too spoiled on the varieties in games like the Dominions/CoE series, Age Of Wonders 2, etc?  I want more mechanical differentiation between the factions' units in EL, but maybe I just need to carry on much much further into my campaigns to find it?

Your critique around a lack of individuality for each faction's combat units is fair.  It's about the only wart I've found in the game.

However, in other terms, the different factions play very differently.  Vaulters play like the Zakharov faction in SMAC but with a "Holy" resource that gives them extra bonuses, while the Wild Walkers are your traditional Green Party/tree-hugger faction.  Other groups play a lot differently (e.g., The Broken Lords gain population with Dust rather than Food, the Ardent Mages can spend Dust to cast spells, Cultists are limited to one (huge) city in the game but spawn villages, etc.).

I almost pulled the trigger on this Grand Collection thing for ten bucks tonight, but something told me to check 'Can You Run It' first. It's telling me my video card can't handle it, but everything else is fine. :(

In fact it's reporting that I have 128MB of dedicated video RAM. W. T. F.

I have Endless Space already in Steam, but am installing it now to see if I can run that or not. (Can You Run It tells me I cannot, in fact, run this one either. :( )
