@Airboy:  Good to hear from you too and nice game blog by the way.

@Jarhead: I should have checked that thread date - I see the other rig thread now.  You have been busy!  Dang that's a lot of VR sets.  Is there one for each occasion ?

Pretty much. Reverbs are for seated flight sims. Rift and quest for roomscale.

Isn't there an option to use alternate controllers as well as towers for outside in tracking? I'd love to benefit from that great Reverb resolution for shooters like HL:Alyx.

Yes, it is sometimes possible to mix and match headsets and controllers, so long as they are based off of the same technology. For instance, you can use Valve index controllers with any headset that uses Valve tracking tech. However, its not the most simple process, it may require third-party software and a lot of tinkering to get it working right. There are other things you need to consider though too...for a game like HL: Alyx, you might also want a stronger audio experience, or better FOV, optics, comfort, etc. The Reverb has great resolution that makes it ideal for simming, but in my opinion, that is where its strength lies. It really excels at little else. The G2 should drastically expand on this though, with unrivaled resolution and clarity with much better audio, comfort, etc. making it an all around better VR headset/package.

OK. So I've built this and it's in my cart. Price is right around the $3,000 mark.

Quote
Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 9 5900X 3.7GHz 12-Core
Motherboard: MSI B550-A PRO - ATX
Memory: G.SKILL Z Trident Total 64 GB Dual Channel Memory
Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 3080 10GB GDDR6X
Operating System Storage: 1TB Patriot P300 PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe
CPU Liquid Cooling: CLX Quench 240 Closed Liquid Cooler
Secondary Storage: 4TB 3.5in Seagate Barracuda HDD
Chassis Selection: Set Eclipse P400S Mid Tower Black/Red
Chassis Fans: CLX Red Ring Fan
Power Supply: EVGA 850 B3 - 80+ Bronze 850W

I'm not sure about the motherboard though. I really just took a guess. It is definitely compatible with the build, but I'm not sure if I could find better value or performance out of something else and I know very little about MOBOs. I also want to make sure it is upgradeable to an RTX 3090, which is ultimately the goal. I just don't want to spend that kind of money now.. I also need to find out how many USB and display ports this thing will have.

Would like SSD space as secondary storage and a 1000w PSU, but that all puts me over my budget.

Otherwise, I think this will be a killer rig if I get it.

Any thoughts, especially on the MOBO issue???

Is the cost difference between the RTX 3080 and 3090 about 600.00? Or is it more?

More! Closer to $1200.

Wow. Damn. Understood why you would not want to drop that cash right now, then.

You should be fine with a B550A motherboard if that is the price point you're aiming for. The X570 is about $200 more.  If you're not doing crazy overclocking or don't need more pci expansion slots or usb ports, B550A should be fine.  With the Ryzen 9 5900x and liquid cooling, you should be able to overclock normally fine if you're into that.

The B550A is a B450 that is set for the OEM and pre-built market I think (they didnt want to wait for the B550's to come out so wanted something with more appeal).  I believe most of the AMD AM4 motherboard lines have received BIOS updates as well to support the latest Ryzens, even some of the older boards.

You can find another NVMe ssd on sale later and slap that in as well.

Have fun and enjoy with that kickass CPU and GPU combo!

Good choice of case btw (Phanteks Eclipse P400S).  I went with the P600s black.  I really like Phantek's designs.

I went with a x570 board and a and a Ryzen-5 3600 I got on sale before the B550's and came out full force.  Hopefully will update with a GTX 3060 later, and update the CPU if I have to.  Good thing with the AMD AM4 boards is you're able to support all the way through with Ryzen 9 via BIOS updates.

Well, I finally pulled the trigger on the rig. The final specs are the same as those posted above except I cut the secondary storage down to 3TB just to save a few extra bucks.

My primary systems will now be this new rig, which I intend to use exclusively for VR siming. The old i7 10th gen with a 2080ti for most of my traditional highend gaming. Another i7 8th gen with a 1080 for lower-end gaming and a third i7 6th gen with a 1070 for my workshop where I do my 3D printing. My last i7 with a 970 will go to my daughter as her first PC for minecraft, roblox and hopefully some education.

I just got to update my 8yr old 3570k for star citizen.

5800
32gig ram
M.2 500 and 250gig drives
N75 corsair water cooling

To pair with my existing 900w psu and 1080 gpu

Now star citizen does not run my cpu at 100% and is by default now less buggy.
The 5800x however is a heat beast and the temps still scare me. I am going to have to put a lot nore fans in the old case I am using.

I don't usually go amd. But wanted pci4 support and the bang for the buck was undeniable. I absolutely think intel designs for hear sink attachment and the quality of the chip designs are better. But intel prices are not competitive. When I purchased the 5800x they were very hard to come by btw. Gpus are the same. So I am going to try to hold off until prices lower, not that they are looking like they will. Damn you covid and bitcoin miners!

I posted my specs in another forum and some people seem to think I really should have gone with an x570 due to pcie4. I know that the 550A-Pro has pcie4, but according to this one guy, only one slot. I'm not sure how much of a difference this will make in performance, but at $200 more, it really wasn't an option for me. Some people are such snobs!

Hot new rig, JH! Just too bad you went AMD.  :2funny:

Seemed to be the better processor for value. What don't you like about AMD? First time I have gone with them in over a decade.
