I had not heard of this find.  From the article, it sounds like Spartacus attempted to break out.

One version I heard was Spartacus scaled the wall by piling his dead against it. Don't know if that's accurate.
"Take a look at that". Sgt. Wilkerson-- CMBN. His last words after spotting a German tank on the other side of a hedgerow.
