Being a Project Lead/Designer on John Tiller's team, we use historical 'reasonableness'.

My last (only?) hypothetical scenario/campaign was 'Fall Kreml' (Operation Kremlin) that was included in Tiller's Panzer Campaigns Moscow '42.

That scenario was based off the German planned second attempt to take Moscow in summer 1942. This planned operation was a ruse used by the German's to mask the actual Fall Blau operation slatted for Southern Russia. The ruse appeared to work as Stalin placed nearly 60% of his forces near Moscow and nearly all the available Tank Corps.

This hypothetical operation assumed that forces used for the northern arm of Fall Blau were used with Army Group Centre to attack towards Moscow. We began the hypothetical operation on June 28th - the same day as Fall Blau did.

Essentially we used all the actual units that were present in Army Group Centre as well as the Fall Blau northern forces that historically went on to capture Voronezh. Essentially these forces were assumed to attack North East instead of East. All the Soviets were setup as they actually were on June 28th.

So this hypothetical attack is based off the actual starting positions of the combatants with only two changes; Army Group Centre attacks rather than standing on the defense as it did historically and that forces that were part of Fall Blau attacked toward Moscow rather than Voronezh.

So in summary, I believe hypothetical scenarios should be plausible and a solid basis for 'alternate history' - that's what we do every time we debate and play a historical situation.

That seems a reasonable way to go, and it keeps it "believable".
The most shocking fact about war is that its victims and its instruments are individual human beings, and that these individual beings are condemned by the monstrous conventions of politics to murder or be murdered in quarrels not their own. Aldous Huxley

It's kind of silly to investigate whether or not a Clinton is lying. That's sort of like investigating why the sky is blue. Banzai_Cat
