As you said, games like Flashpoint are a niche market.  Given the time and expense in developing these games, they have to do stuff like this, if games of this quality are to be produced and maintained.  The only alternative is to do what Command Modern Operations does: Make a government version, and use the some of the funds and development related to it to maintain the commercial version.

Flashpoint: Cold War - "a new baseline" for the series. Damn, I thought I've heard this already with Southern Storm. According to Erik Rutins, owners of the Southern Storm will be able to "easy and inexpensively" upgrade to Cold War. Well, call me not fully convinced.

Sins2 got a go but just me in single player. Still really enjoying it. Just wish it was more tactical. A patch just came down fixing some of the movement bugs. I was getting some fleets just jumping a few types of ships and the rest sitting their going "nah,, we don't wanna fight" :)

Tried Total War divide et impera and the battles are somewhat enjoyable but everything still seems too much like slidey stick figures with washed out colours and too much detail removed at a distance. They make great stills though. I mean I zoom out a little way and my troops turn a totally different colour as I zoom away.
