Title: Important Weather News
Post by: solops on September 12, 2022, 11:02:46 PM
We are FINALLY getting some temps below 71 deg F on a regular basis. Now maybe the tomatoes will set fruit. It was 64 last night.

It's raining here after about 10 weeks with almost no measureable rain. Low of 49 degrees forecast a few days from now 🥳

Same here! -- but probably too late for tomatoes.

Weirdly, we had a crazy number of 'volunteer' tomatoes in one part of our garden all last year (down to pretty late in the fall), but not a single solitary one showed up this year despite all the seeds which must have been dropped last year. Premerge got them I guess...? (In effect, they were Dad's last gift to us before he died: the day before, we had been out trying to get some tomato planters operational, although they didn't do nearly as well as the 'wild' ones which sprang up all over the place nearby!)

Anyway: this year's snowpocalypse thread can't be very far behind! Supposedly, West TN will have more than average snow this year thanks to the fourth El Nina in a row. (And also be drier this winter than average...??)

Central Texas 100 miles West of Austin.  93 at noon, 64 that night. Common this time of year. In July it was 101 at 2 PM and 72 at night pretty much all the time. The real icing is the 25 to 35% humidity. Feels great in the shade all the time. I hated Houston, which is why we retired here. And with Amazon delivery, my wife does not even miss the shopping! You just have to get used to all plant life dying in the summer.

Except the cactus. And my teeny garden. The deer eat anything that tries to live. I knew there was trouble when they ate all of my serranos and jalapenos...peppers, leaves and stems.

Fall is here in Fla. as well. It's noon and hasn't reached 90 degrees yet.  :o  On a really good note, the Hummingbirds have come back right on time.

Ooooooo! Interesting. I track the hummingbirds here each year. Our annual "residents" left a few weeks ago and the follow-up migration groups ended this week. We have hardly any left now. It is interesting that the ruby-throats always seem to be the first each year and the last through in the fall. The other get along well enough for six or seven to feed at the same time on one feeder with only the occasional homicidal flurry. But when the ruby throats show up, that is all over. The meanest always appoints himself as the Nazi feeder guard, allowing none to feed. The scene changes from 20  or 30  jostling to feed to one or two attempting a quick sip before they get dive-bombed.

I have never been able to get them to get along well enough to share feeders, so I'm very jealous. It's the same here, the Ruby-Throats show-up first followed by others. They always leave at the same time as well, first part of March. Each year I resolve to get a couple of good pics of them but, damn, they are fast.  :o

There's a guy named, 'Ian' out in the gulf that's causing a lot of trouble for people in Fla. The latest advisory has him headed right for my house tomorrow. We are boarded-up, battened-down, and laid-in lots of milk, bread, and ass-wipe. And...Bourbon. So we're as ready as can be.

Will probably be without power for some time but will try to let everyone know how we are doing ASAP. But if you don't hear from me...I will see you all on the, 'Other Side' Grogheads.  O0

I live up in the Southern Panhandle and 25 to 35% humidity is a sultry day here.  Of course most days the wind blows 25 to 35.  LOL

I have several families in my family (on both sides) living in and around Tampa (and eastward into central FL below Orlando) -- plus at least three customers whom my family knows from work, in Tampa. So we're keeping an eye on things as the eye approaches. Flooding could be epic.

None of my family have moved out of the area for various reasons -- one family (of cousins) because they have a working beef farm and shouldn't abandon the cattle, the others because... well, Florida natives. ;) (2nd generation immigrants from Quebec. I'm 3rd gen on my father's side.)

Alas, one of my (late) father's sisters just learned that her oldest son, who lives north of New Orleans with his wife and kids, had a stroke yesterday morning (he's a few months younger than me); so naturally she (and her husband) are anxious to get there to see him, and now can't move until whenever.

To quote Egg Shen from Big Trouble in Little China: "Now for the bad news: ready?!"  As bad as those wipes look, it's likely to be MUCH worse -- as far as I can tell, that's 'only' the storm surge.

If so, those water wipe images don't count the flooding from 10 to 24 inches of rain being dumped on the area over the next two days.

Nor the 10 to 24 inches of rain being dumped inland running back to the coast over the next two days.

Nor the 6 to 10 inches of rain being dumped inland north and south of the area, some of which will run back to this area of the coast over the next two days.

(None of my family live in the downflood + storm-surge areas, btw. Though my grandfather tried to farm the area now covered by Tampa International Airport. Being bought out, all those decades ago, was the best thing that ever happened to him...!)

Kind of weird that instead of being in his truck on a dark and stormy night as the last scene (and last lines) of the film, the background shot comes from his attempt at infiltrating a brothel as a dweeby customer...

Though admittedly, soon afterward in that scene, the earth quakes, poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake!

(.....not for the obvious reason. ;) )

Didn't this same kind of phenomenon occur just before the tsunami hit indonesia a few years ago?  I hope this time it's just the hurricane sucking out all the water from the local area and it will eventually just come back on it's own.

I talking about the actual drainage of water that was dumped on Florida.
it helps that the southern half of the country is a swamp and that the areas affected have a intricate canal system.

OK, I'm back.  :)  Everyone's OK here, no fatalities just some very, 'scared-shitless' people. Minor damage to the house, the screen porch ended up in the pool, and some big trees piled-up like Pick-Up-Sticks. Power's back on as of this morning but I been busy with the clean-up and helping with a whole lot of tarps on roofs.

This is my 4th major hurricane, the first was Hurricane Donna back in 1960. I was 4 years old and never thought I would be that scared again. I was wrong. What was supposed to be a storm passing to our west turned and pretty much hit us direct. Instead of about 4 hours of hurricane force wind turned into almost 10 hours of it, from about 4:30 pm to around 2:30 the next morning. But the storm panels held and the Wife and I made it through.

However a lot of people didn't. There is a massive amount of damage from Ft. Myers north to the Tampa area and east across the whole state. I hadn't been able to see any of the videos you guys posted here and all I can say is, "DAMN"!

Anyway with the help of the Almighty and family, friends, and some great neighbors we pulled through OK. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. It's good to be back, I was afraid you all would have the Drunken Orgy without me.

I grew up in SE Texas about 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. And I spent 48 years working in and around Houston. As I watched the whole gulf coast over the years I have come to the conclusion that the whole thing has become so intensely developed and populated that any serious hurricane that hits will be a HUGE disaster. It's like, they can't miss.

Because this is obviously the first wet weather system to exist since EV's have come en vogue.  Clearly, none of the manufacturers thought to simply make them 'waterproof' before now.  I'm sure that will be fixed post haste.

I've always wanted Water Front Property. For several days last week I had it.

Country artists might be clairvoyant.

I got some ocean front property in Arizona
From my front porch you can see the sea

Arizona and other points around the quad-point have certainly been getting floody rains for a while now!

A little bit of rain that comes down in torrents for a short time (an hour or two), causes a flood then dries up.

Interesting WWII Arizona story with the weather thrown in; There was a POW camp near Phoenix that held a bunch of U-boat crewmen. They managed to find a map of Arizona that showed the Gila river that flows from Phoenix to the Colorado River, then to Mexico. So the POWs spent several weeks building a secret boat, and several of them managed to break out one night and carry the boat down to the river. All they found was a dry river bed. Basically, the river only has water after heavy rains, and even then not very much. Disheartened, the U-boatmen dropped their boat and returned to the POW camp.

But the big weather story in Arizona is a very long, very bad drought on one hand, and crazy urban sprawl and increasing water demands on the other.

Hey, wait, did I see a news story pop up about that boat being found recently?? {checking}

Ah, no, it was at Shasta Lake, but it's a great piece of WW2 history: https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/mystery-surrounds-wwii-ghost-boat-found-in-california-lake-amid-low-water-revels/ar-AA12O8KJ?ocid=entnewsntp&cvid=035b229eb2584262bb18dce187a87bac

This Higgens boat was used by Patton as his front-line HQ during the Allied invasion of Sicily.

A lot better now thanks Star. There are a lot of volunteer organizations out and about giving assistance, almost everyone has power and there's plenty of gas stations open. Longer term, a lot of businesses are going to close or relocate and you can bet many insurance companies are going to stop writing new policies or jack-up their rates hugely. But since Ian left, the weather has been near perfect with very low humidity and cool temps. The best businesses to be in right now are Roofing, Aluminum Contractor, and Tire Repair because everybody's got flats from all the damned screws, bolts, and especially roofing nails all over.  :pullhair:

buy some of these:

you can also get crafty and fix a few of them to the bumper of your car.  we did this last year during a quarry shoot in South Miami and it was surprisingly effective.

Damn, that's pretty cool. The locals would probably think I was hunting for buried treasure and follow me all over too so, bonus points for punking as well. Thanks man.  :bd:
