Too many characters, too many locations. Lots and lots of moving parts. Best move Peter Jackson did was to wipe out the Tom Bombadil sideshow.

I liked it - it pioneered too much for me not to appreciate it. Compare it to The Hobbit. There's a lot of difference.

The whole thing worked brilliantly. If I'm going to reach for some Tolkien to read, there's no contest as to which one comes off the shelf.
