Can you play Vassal games via PBEM or do all parties need to be online at once to resolve their turns?

Yup, you can pbem. The program has the option of letting you record a log file that you then send off and your opponent will load that log and play it back. It will show you all the moves that were made, dice rolls, card draws and any text that was entered in to the chat window. It works quite well depending on the game (some are better suited for pbem than others).

Excellent.  I think you mentioned you'd be up for playing ETO a few posts above.  I wouldn't mind giving that game a whirl.  I'll have to read up on the rules, both new and old to refamiliarize myself with the game.

I'll start doing the same.  I think that would be an excellent game to pbem.  Could/would take a while, but a few turns per week over a period of time is fine by me.

^Sounds good!  I need to re-download the vassal engine and the gamebox for ETO tonight.  I've got my rule book on my nightstand for some light reading before I turn in as well.   ;)

This sounds interesting. Been a while since I've done VASSAL. Let me know if you guys need someone else.

Just realized there are two eto games out there.  One by SPI from 1973 and the one I'm talking about and have is: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2447/world-war-ii-european-theater-of-operations

That's the one that I have and here's the rules that I'm starting to go over:

This would be a good game to have a number of sides/players with I would think.  Let's see if I can get through these rules though!

I'm interested if you need another player.

I can't seem to find the vassal module...  what is it called?

Oh, forgot.  vassalengine.org pulled all of the SPI modules per request from hexwar.com.  I grabbed a copy of the module before they got yanked.  It's a fairly well done module though it was made several years ago and so it isn't quite "full" featured.  It's about 6.5 gb in size.  I can try emailing it or if you've joined my dropbox ASL folder, I can throw a copy of it up there.

Well as jazzed as I am to play ETO because I heard that it is simply the best war in Europe game to play because it is approachable and a very fine game - it isn't going to work via pbem it appears:

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/601864/playing-by-email-using-vassal
And organizing live play is always so hit or miss, especially in a large game like this where it would take many sessions to complete.

BUT - I'm still going to go through the rules and see if it could work.  ASL is a very interactive game and yet it can be played via email.

Another option is to look at The Supreme Commander.  GMT is fixing the game (I'm awaiting my replacement kit) but I believe that the fixed rulebook is available and the fixed VASSAL module should be ready fairly soon.

It's a pity that PBEM is not compatible with this game.  Well if we can find a way to make it work I say let's go for it, but if not it's ok.  We'll find something else I'm sure.
