Hey guys, I randomly determined turn order and hacendado identity.
Order:
1.) Mike (red)
2.) l'amour (blue)
3.) Me (yellow)
4.) Rex (green)
5.) James (black)
Vassal dice are ridiculous..
We should probably move our Hacendado cards to the board so that our tableaus are always visible on the board. Same goes for the money tracker. The individual player windows will just be for hand cards. Because this is PBEM and people could easily track who has what cards (since they all come from the market and are known), I suggest that we play with open hands. In the handful of games I've played of Pamir and Porfiriana by PBEM, this seems to be how things are typically handled.
Looking forward to playing.

Yes, I agree. I was just being lazy. ::)
Urk. It's been a while. I forgot how crappy the rules are. Ok, hopefully I did this right. Please point out my mistakes and ridicule me for them. It is the only way I learn.
Anyhoo, if I did it right, everybody lost half their gold, suckers!
l'amour should be up.
Done! I think I remember the rules. As with Mike, shout at me if I have done it wrong.
Amarillo/Senor Binkman is next.
FYI, if you need to learn the rules or refresh yourself on the rules, these videos, which I found on BGG, were quite good.
Fear the yellow!
Mike cut Black's/James's gold from 11 to 8 in his turn. Black started with 8 because his hacendado's special ability gave +3 starting gold. I corrected it. With the halved gold, Black has 6 instead of 4.
James/Black is up.

Ahh. I did wonder why that was in my log, but I should have posted too. Thanks for fixing. Although, I don't really think James deserves that much gold.

Wait. It should be 5 gold remaining. It was remove half gold, rounded up.

It depends on what you're rounding up--the amount removed or the amount remaining. I assumed that you round the amount remaining (in favor of the player) as opposed to rounding up the amount subtracted (against the player). I couldn't find a rounding rule in my quick search of the rules.

The card text was something like "Each player discards half his gold(+)", so that way I played it for everyone was I calculated the amount to be removed by dividing by two and rounding up. If we give James 6 gold, we need to give gold back to some others, including me.

+ does mean round up, and the card is referring to the gold to be discarded, so...
Are you sure you did that for everyone? Seems like I checked how someone else who had an odd number was rounded.

Rex: Did I do something to you to tick you off?
I just replayed my log:
Red: 2=>1
Blue: 5 => 2
Yellow: 6 => 3
Green: 7 => 3
Black 8 => 4 (the 8 was wrong, should be 11=>5)
Looks like I always rounded up the discard, no?
We're all sorted aren't we? When will Woodall come back and end this extended quibble?
I have no rancor on my side. Here is a log with Black's gold adjusted to 5.
Unless Rex or anyone else objects, I'd say Woodall should play from this one.

No. It was an honest question. When I saw where the confusion with Black had come from, I did a quick check of the rules and didn't find a rounding rule in the glossary. I then looked at how you handled rounding the others. I thought I followed how you rounded the other odd amounts.

No worries here. You ok with our state now?
Yeah, I think so.
Anyone know where Woodall's at?

Yeah, I think so.
Anyone know where Woodall's at?
I think the arraignment was Friday, I guess the judge didn't set a bail?
Ironically (or maybe not), I was dealing with the Feds all week. And I completely forgot I signed up for this game... give me a bit to digest what the hell it is we're doing here. I'll take my turn tonight so we can get rolling.
Okay, didn't have time tonight - will read the RB tomorrow. Sorry!
I assume the red border means it is face-up? If not... I picked up the federal troops and the lawsuit card. Also, L'amour - you need to flip your cards. And I may need to flip my cards... :D
The music in those videos cracks me up
Ok, Red went and did little. Blue / l'amour is up.
Sorry, just seen this. I'm not getting notifications all of a sudden. I'll get to this at some point in the not too distant future.
In case others are having subscription problems and have missed the 1830 game, here's a link to it: http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=17959.0
Mike, you're up in that, if you haven't seen it.
Hmm.. I thought I had hit notify on the 1830 thread, but maybe I did not.
Done. Binkman next.
Bought some cards, nothing too exciting. Rex up.
I bought a couple of cards. Woodall is up.
Also Woodall, you may have missed it but we're playing with open hands since who has what cards is trackable. It's just easier for everyone to keep their cards shown so people don't have to track it.
Thanks for the heads up, Rex. I'll get my turn in tonight.
My tonight extends into the next night, it turns out.
Also, my character seems really shitty. 3 extra gold once vs half price the whole game? What's the catch?
Your character would've been better had Mike not cut everyone's gold by 1/2 (rounding down) at the start of the game. So basically, you only got 1 of your 3 gold. Often, the 1/2 off is better than it looks. It only applies to one type of card, so it's only helpful if you need that type of card. To really take advantage of it, you have to commit to a strategy to exploit that type of card. So the benefit lasts throughout the game, but it potentially limits your freedom of action.
Just a play order reminder:
1.) Mike (red)
2.) l'amour (blue)
3.) Me (yellow)
4.) Rex (green)
5.) James (black)
l'amour is up.
I think Mike is up. (I'm just reading your nice list there)
Mike is going to a gaming con. Packing like mad tonight. Travelling tomorrow.. Drinking and gaming after that.

Dallas.
Ok, looks like I may have some time to do my turn tonight, packing is going well.
Are we putting played cards on the main table? Has nobody played a card to the table yet?
I believe we're playing cards to the table. No one that I've seen has played one yet. I used to live in Fort Worth, nice place!
Ok, I bought a card and sold a card, then speculated.
Blue / l'amour is up.
Like I said, l'amour is up. :P
Done!
Bought a card; sold some cards. First topple showed up. Rex's turn.
Bought/sold a card. Woodall is up.
Same...
Bought La Europa, played it, speculated. Blue / l'amour is up.
Done. Yellow's turn.
Binkman hasn't responded to TUSCW e-mails either. He's probably dead. Like 63% chance.
Dead? Selfish bastard.
Sorry everyone. Dead isn't far from the truth. I've recovered. And then my wife brought home a puppy.
Pure chaos.
Turn is done.
I played the Train Robbers card on Red and put unrest on the slave plantation--because slavery is wrong. :knuppel2:
Woodall is up.
Just quietly running my little business - pay no attention to the gringo. Mike, you're up!
*sigh*. Paid to remove unrest, took a card, speculated.
Blue / l'amour is up.
I established a lovely theatre in Chihuahua.
On to Binkman.
Bought some cards... SeƱor Madero is up
Sorry...forgot I was up.
Black (Woodall?) is up.
I don't know, do some stuff... make some money

Damn, everybody hates the plantation.
Buy a card, play a card, buy land (special ability to buy land for 1 action). I am so peaceful... why can't people let me have my slaves in peace?
I've got no problem with your plantation. I believe so much in it that I figured I'd invest in shipping and help you protect the thing. We're partners, buddy. Partners!

Ah yes, "protection." All very reasonable.

Sorry for the delay. I set up an ostrich farm, which obivously took longer than expected due to the mischeivous nature of the ostrich.
Binkman next.
Bought a couple of cards for free, sold my interest in a bank.
Woodall is up.
I have no idea what is happening.
Land rush!
L'amour is up, I think.
I took a couple of cards from the market. I don't remember if the owner of an extorting troop gets paid in my turn or as normal in his. I think it's his so I left it..
Also, two logs because I forgot to sort the market cards at the end of my turn.
On to Binkman.
I played it as if it were on the troop owner's turn.

If you're referring to collecting gold for an extorting troop, yes, you collect it on the troop owner's turn. "Ownership" of the card is irrelevant. You always collect gold for your cubes during your turn.
Grabbed a couple cards
Ditto. L'amour is up.
Sorry for the delay.
I've bought the topple card. I'm using the -1 modifier so tripartite is currently:
+2 Diaz
-1 Modifier
+0 for the 2 lowest Loyalty (Red & Black)
Total: 1
Check the log and let me know if I've missed anything and then in order say whether you will flip your Hacendado. After it gets back to me I'll update the log and see where we are..
I'll pass.
I'll pass as well, since I have no loyalty to add. I think Mike will have to flip his Hacendado or else l'amour will win, correct?
If Mike flips his then the two lowest will be Mike (1) and Woodall (0) putting tripartite at 2.
If I flip my hacendado I'll be on 3 so I think I might win anyway, unless I've missed something...

Ah. I was thinking you had to flip your card first, so didn't look to see if you could get a loyalty.
I am very bad at tracking the various win conditions for this game.
Are we done?
Player who buys the topple card flips last! I'll be on 3 to the tripartite 2.
I think it might be over...

I think you're correct (I was working purely from memory). With new players, we should have played with the variant that you use the top 2 opponents instead of the bottom 2. Much less likely for a victory to sneak up on everyone.
Nonetheless, well played.
Yeah, good game!
Cheers!
I'm not sure if Vassal/PBF is the best format for this game. It's nice to get a game in (after quite a break) but the immediacy of face-to-face is, for me, an important part of the game.
I think the biggest problem is the tendency just to review the file immediately preceding your turn, therefore missing out on what the other players have been doing/how they did it.
Yep, I agree.
The open hands and disjointed log format are decidedly terrible for this game. That said, I never regret a game with you fine gentlemen.

Yeah, I agree of both counts. I might be able to make it work if I were not inherently lazy. But, well.
Ah well.
Anyway... 1830 isn't quite the snappy lol-fest none of us were expecting so are there any other games anyone wants to try out whilst that quietly rumbles along?
Is there any interest in any other Winsome titles? I'd throw a module together for any of the games I personally own. I think there are existing modules for a lot of the Age of Steam maps, if that would be of any interest.
The Great Zimbabwe is in Beta testing at Boardgamecore. When they get the module up, I'd like to give it a whirl. There's also an online implementation of Indonesia (the site slips my mind at the moment), which I would be interested in playing.
Well crap, Rex, all of these sound good to me.
Indonesia especially. But all of them.
I wouldn't mind Indonesia.
That said, wouldn't mind not having to sign up for another site either.
I'd lean towards Indonesia too.
Let's go with Indonesia then.
Here's the website: http://www.slothninja.com/
It's up to 5 players, so we can all play. Let me know here if you're in or not, and I'll create the game. (Looks like you have to set the number of players at the beginning).
I should add. Once I create the game, I can put a password on it so only you guys can join.
In. Only played twice before.
I'll play. Traveling this week though so no promises on fast play.
In, if there is a rulebook available...
Ah! The rules are on that site.
I'll read those then..
I can get you a scanned copy if you want.
Got it now! Cheers!
Oh, those are the actual rules. I thought it was some sort of junky word doc.
Since there's been no word from Binkman, I went ahead and created a 4-player game of Indonesia at Slothninja.
Game: "rstites25's game"
Password: "TGB" (all caps)
I've never actually played a game at that website, so I don't know if there's e-mail notifications available or not. So if everyone can post here when they've joined the game, that might help as a reminder when the game's about to start.
It looks like you can go into your account settings at slothninja and turn on e-mail notifications.
I'm in. I might need to look at the rules before we start playing.
I'm here as well
Hi guys,
Super busy here near the end of the semester. Please proceed without me.
Oh, look at me - I have a job! :dreamer:
l'amour has joined the game of Indonesia.
Mike is first to act.
And, without even looking at the rules, a city is placed!
Rules schmooles
