Title: [PBEM]Solium Infernum - Come claim Hell's Throne! (max 6 players)
Post by: Yskonyn on October 24, 2018, 03:24:13 PM
It's been a long time since this little gem was released; 2009 to be exact!
But its a great game and pretty cheap as well if you don't have it (15 bucks).

Solium Infernum is a turn based strategy game that lets you vie for the throne in Hell. Literally!
From Cryptic Comet's features page:

-Customize your Archfiend avatar by selecting your starting attributes, infernal rank, public objective and special perks.

-Level up your Archfiend in 5 different spheres of evil: Wrath, Deception, Prophecy, Destruction and Diabolism.

- Battle for the control of hell across a landscape of beautifully painted hexes on 3 different map sizes.

- Over 50 different unique legions await your orders.

-Legions gain experience and can be augmented with powerful heroes and artifacts

-Over 30 unique Places of Power dot the endless tracks of hell.  Capture them and use them to secure your claim on the Infernal Throne

-Retire to your sinister ritual chamber and call on dark arcane powers and over 30 unholy relics to damage, cripple or hinder your enemies... and allies of convenience.

-Over 30 unique event cards keep the game unpredictable.  Challenge your rivals in the infernal games of Pandemonium, send your finest legion on an expedition against Heaven's ramparts or call an ill-timed cessation of all vendettas and blood feuds.

-Compete against up to 5 other humans or AI's in a PBEM battle royal.

-Games last anywhere from 25 to 50 turns.  A small single player game can be completed in just a few hours.

-Over 150 beautifully painted images can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven, what matter where if I still be the same.

Then again, now that you've suggested it, I'm not sure how players who don't have it already (I do) are going to get it...  ???

It isn't on GoG yet, or on Steam. Nor on Gamersgate (which sometimes has separate games from the other two).

Cryptic Comet has been the only place to get the game and still is as far as I know.
I lost my installer over time and the initial download link isnt active anymore so I've contacted them for help.
I do have my key (ofc), so depending filesize perhaps you could share the installer? Might be quickest.

It isn't large, but I think it's on a CD. I'll have to check.

Thanks!
Vic moved on to cardboard boardgame development and even though he stated that tech support for his electronic games would continue, I wouldn't be surprised if the response is delayed extensively.

I'm fairly sure the SI download is less than 100MB.  It could be easily shared.  I'm sure I have it on CD somewhere myself.

Don't worry guys! Vic just emailed me new download links for SI as well as Armageddon Empires! Nice!

So Huw, would you be interested in joining the Pbem fest here?

Yeah I'll give it a go as long as the turns aren't too quick (my gaming time is heavily budgeted as it is).

I haven't played in a very long time though.  I played a few games when it released and that was it.

Well I think its safe to say Jason and myself (for sure) haven't had much SI exposure either! :)

Turns are quick to play in my experience. You don't have to manage a number of cities, for example. Units on the board are limited to single groups (from one to maybe five at the most), and you don't have to manage the troops under your commanders, or manage your commanders much either.

Bad news... I keep getting 'Object Not Found' errors while doing various parts of the game.
It seems like script error caused by something.  :-\

Forget about this game at times.  Pretty sure I also have it backed up on a disk somewhere, although I'd have to dig after having moved.

Is it not running well on more modern OSes?

I'll try and dig out my copy this weekend and see how it goes.

The problem was me not having created an Avatar yet. Instead of the game telling me that was the problem it just throws a script error.

I am up an running now to my surprise! So a PBEM game is still very much an option if you guys get it to run! Should be fun!

Seems to run just fine for me, Ysk.  I just played a few turns with a couple of AI opponents to jog my memory and I didn't know what the hell I was doing (lol geddit).  I think I'm going to have to read the manual for this one!  I remember printing the manual out a long time ago.

I seem to be on version 1.06b, whereas the latest version is 1.08c which also incorporates a free expansion Rectification (http://si.battlespot.com/wiki/Patches).  I guess we should upgrade to that?

Definately update!

My installer includes the latest.

Good to hear! I'll be diving into the manual as well!

OK all done (first time I've manually patched a game in years).  I will try and at least have a pretender created by the end of the weekend.

Hm. Well, I thought I had it installed somewhere, but apparently I don't. I still have some save files and other auxiliaries including a set of avatars I created for a single-player game (all based on Rogue Agents from my fantasy novels ;) ), but not the actual software.

So I get to go hunting through my bags and stacks and drawers!  :bd: <:-)

(But probably not today. Probably tomorrow.)

Or, just email Vic with your order number and get a new download link saving you potentially a lot of hassle. :)

You mean, the order number on my disc?

yes, as soon as I find it...  :buck2:

(I feel pretty confident about finding it tho -- I've just been away from the house all day, and won't be able to look around until tomorrow afternoon sometime.)

Work (and weather/allergies) has been rather draining recently, and I absolutely crashed when I got home. But I have made some progress at least on the Age of Wonders game! I still feel confident about being able to find this disc and get it running, too. (With the most recent patch, which I've already downloaded.)

After preparing a massive reinforced garbage sack of games for donation to the guys at work (and/or to the dump, since all these games are available on GoG and/or elsewhere, inexpensively, and I already re-bought most of them, or they simply don't work on modern systems, or they're just totally superseded by modern games easily bought elsewhere)...

...I have found the disc I sought!

Testing shall commence soon. But progress has been occurred! (As my late pupil liked to say in Chinglish.)

(Oddly, I have managed to gain not much free space from preparing a 25 gallon bag of games to be moved along! -- so while that progress has also progressed more remains to be done.  :P )

Heh, I've never been to this part of the forum before.

Edit: disregard, I may have found the download link after all.

Alright, I was able to download the game and get it running.  The only reason I found the email was because I bought Six Gun Saga a really long time ago, and that keyword search actually turned up the right email originator (BMT Micro or something like that).

Gimme a bit to re-learn the game; I was never very good at it to begin with, but I remember it being harder than it appeared at first glance.

While we're waiting, I assume Ysk will host the game? If so, how do the pbem mechanics work?

My religious views prevent me from playing to become the king of hell - seriously.  But this reminded me of their other games which I never bought because I lacked the time.  Their other three (six gun; Armageddon empires, the occult one) all appeal.

I'll probably check them out heavily during the Christmas sales and hopefully grab the lot of them.

I have similar qualms in my games; I never play Chaos in Warhammer if I can help it. (Orks maybe but not the CSM.) But when I discovered how sarcastic this game is -- it's basically the Screwtape Letters combined with Milton -- I was okay with it. In small doses. ;)

All the demons in my novels are naturally trying to compete with each other to become the ultimate over-tyrant, which is how they regard God. But they keep tripping over their pride and the various things God does to teach them that their rebellion is both misguided and impossible to achieve. The game has some similar points: the demons are in a constant state of delusion about their chances, and what they think of as a victory would even be like. Their goals are simply pointless and empty, despite their self-serving propaganda -- but the strategy involved makes for a challenging game!  O:-)
