Not unsurprising. I'm fine with the choice, as long as they tell good stories.

I'll be disappointed if they continue pandering with a lesbian love affair between her and whomever (Missy and/or companion), but those doors have already been opened -- way, way open -- so I might as well get ready for disappointment. Many other fans will be disappointed if they don't, so.  ::)

Can Timelords really change their sex during regenerations?
I always thought that was one of the things that were pre-set for them.
The Doctor so far has always been male and so has the Master, while River Song for an example was always female.

The only time I saw the Doctor turning female was in that awesome parody of Doctor Who (with Rowan Atkinson in the lead role!).

The Master has been female for awhile now as Missy (Mistress).

River Song isn't a Time Lord. She is human, but was born on the TARDIS while it was traveling so due to it's effects she has some of the Time Lords' powers (or something like that).

Michelle Gomez played a great part and brought the character to life. Sadly, that was also her last appearance.

Alex Kingston ( as River Song) has also played a great character - I'd like to see more of her in future episodes.

I think it was established by the writers some time before it was mentioned (much less shown) on-show that Time Lords could change genders. The first time I recall them mentioning it on-show was back in 11's run (or maybe early in 10... one of the Doctors referenced a fellow TL who had changed gender).

The Big Finish Audio plays, while semi-canon, have had it for longer.

They already pretty much did away with the idea of a limited number of regenerations.
