the Doctors shoes say quite a bit about the character.
That is well done.
sweet!
We enjoyed it :)
I was really concerned with how this would play out. having now watched the episode I can say I like this riff. I like it a lot.
...and Clara is, indeed, a tasty bit of crumpet.
A bit of 'Who' trivia for y'all. The actress who plays Madam Vastra, Neve McIntosh, played the part of Fuchsia Groan in the BBC adaptation of Gormenghast.
More trivia: the opening credit for nu-Season 8 were designed by a fan and picked up for production by Matt Smith.
so far so good!
really fucking good!
Im finding that the brilliance of Capaldis Doctor is that hes the Doctor you would be. you want to be a Smith or a Tennent because theyre fun and light. but this guy.... he's my Monday morning with no coffee, no filter and heres a sandwich of STFU.
Watched episode 2 yesterday, and thought it was pretty good.
New series is heck of a lot darker and reminds me of the classic series - but with better SFX.

Well, if his regenerations restarted then he's kind of in 1st Doctor mode, so that makes sense. O0

Looks interesting. There's a UNIT add-on for it as well. Anyone played this? Reports?
Late to the party, I finally watched episodes 1 & 2 and all I can say is...meh. I had such high hopes for Capaldi but so far I'm not seeing a big difference in Doctor Who overall. Maybe it will get better, I certainly hope so. Moffat had a real chance to change Doctor Who here but so far I'm just not seeing it. :(

Oh man. I haven't done a Dr Who RPG since the FASA game in the 80s.

Well, whatever. I think Capaldi has potential but is being held back by bad writing. There's nothing about special about these first two episodes. Eccleston, Tennant or Smith could have played the Doctor in them. Like I said I hope it gets better.
Just be glad it isn't this guy

I didn't think he was that bad. I thought he was great in some parts of that 80's run, and it looked like the BBC execs weren't big fans of the series at this point, which did not help. Wasn't a fan of whoever designed his costume, and I think he made the most of what he was given at that point.
Interesting note, I think he was in Montreal last weekend for ComicCon.
I think the writing is fine. in the last 2 months Ive seen every episode since 2005 and these are well done. the catch is that hes pretty much a dick in a way that I would be a dick if I had a TARDIS and a 3000 IQ. :2funny:

Me too.
The first two episodes didn't convince me either but you really have to watch up to the latest episode to start to 'get' Capaldi. He's not as approachable as Smith or Tennant but there are scenes in
Robot of Sherwood and
Listen that start to define his character in a much deeper way. He is though, a grumpy old bastard.

I played that too, but FASA was a tactical system shoehorned into the show that didn't really fit the genre for many people. The current game is
much better.

I just watched
Robot of Sherwood and agree. I still think the writing is sloppy but the character of the Doctor is noticeably different in a good way. Being a grumpy old bastard is good. They need to move far away from the 10 & 11 Doctors.
I'm looking forward to the next episode!
Listen will go down as an all time classic Who episode.

I totally agree. As a long time fan of the show (since 1968, one of my earliest memories are of a Patrick Troughton episode) there was that moment in the barn that was a real WTF moment and turned the whole continuity on it's head, in a good way.
Whatever it is (I haven't caught up yet), it couldn't possibly be
The Macra Terror (which I just got finished watching as a Loose Cannon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyHPfgr3eIo&list=UU3qTp6GEW_GxR81Fez4ynug) reconstruction).
I don't mean that as a compliment to TMT. :uglystupid2: Some good ideas batted around a little too long...
(For those who don't know, "Loose Cannon" was a group who with BBC's unofficial blessing eventually reconstructed all missing eps from telesnaps and scattered captured footage + sound captures. BBC has started doing sort-of the same thing officially now to fill out missing stories in their catalog, sometime with computer animation instead of telesnaps. Per their agreement, LC takes down videos when BBC releases them officially.)

True; also he had practically no experience as an actor at the time, if I recall correctly. But he gamely tried to take the Doctor in a VERY different direction per the writers: they wrote him to be a schizo coward a'hole (to start with), and that's how he faithfully and competently played him. >:D But characterization marched on, and so did he as his run continued. The Trial of a Time Lord was about the most ambitious thing they ever tried aside from The Key to Time back in TBaker's run. (Well, obviously they've been more ambitious since modern Who started, but in the classical era. The Cartman Plan for 7 was supposed to be ambitious but the plug got pulled before he had done more than hint at it; I hear Big Finish eventually played that out in audio dramas...?)
I just watched Listen and all I can say is please, please let the rest of stories be as good as this! Capaldi is excellent as the Doctor in this episode. O0
Im liking the development through the last episode.
It would seem the first episode of the season is the worst of the lot and I didnt think it was so bad. Tonights is lots if fun!
I'm dying. I cant watch this season online.

Yeah, we caught it last night on catch-up. Very good episode, I like the way Capaldi is shaping the part.
Daughter #1 got me hooked on the doc this summer. Been catching up with past episodes.
I like this new guy.

Not trying to turn this into a gun debate, but has anyone noticed how these episodes could be quickly shortened if the doctor just carried a weapon?
The bank one was the first I've seen where that solution wouldn't work.
:(
are you all caught up to this season Biggs?
yes. Amazon has the bluray of season 8 releasing Dec.
the quality varies but there seem to be episodes around if you google Dr Who season 8.
Thanks Star, I found it on the Space channel. My quality of life just went up a notch.

Currently watching the LC reconstruction of 2nd Doctor's "Evil of the Daleks" (my theory being to finish one early Doctor before doing a modern Doctor).

Ok.
I can soooooo identify with this version of the Doctor.
do watch tonights episode in HD. the backround and sets are tweaked to hell and beyond.
the moonscapes are spectacular!
Half way through now. Martok will need to watch it with Metaldog.
respond with a pm if you like but where did you find the episodes and were they of decent quality?
fuck it.... Space Channel.... ::) its been a very fraking long week.
Wow, Clara has a meltdown. Not impressed. It does not fit her prior character.
you didnt see that coming after the end of the last episode?
I've only seen 4 episodes now on Space. They are a bit scattered so I have not tried to follow it as a series. The last I watched was robin hood.
this season is fairly sequential.
Do you think she leaves the show?
sure. all companions have a 2 season lifespan more or less. its just part of the show and how it works. when you get a new Doctor the current companion sticks around to get the audience through the transition by providing consistency. when you get down to it the only constant is the Doctor.
A good summary. I will go with that.
Too bad, she is a pleasure to watch.
Karen Gillan as Amy Pond was better.
IMHO
its hard to define. all of the new Doctors have had really strong female companions. Id go as far as to say that theyve all been stronger and better Sarah Janes ( who redefined the role of companion).
I liked Gillan at the beginning, then she seemed to develop an attitude like she was too cool for it. She should have left sooner.
and thats exactly why theres a shelf life.
theres only so many times you can dip and hammer a piece of metal before it becomes a sword.
Rose Tyler, (Billie Piper) was in for quite a while and played a good part.
it would seem that Gus is the baddie tonight.
awesome episode tonight.

Yes, I started watching TV
at all during the 4th Doctor's run. I'm working back up to him.
The 1st Doctor managed to keep the series going and established maybe half the ground lore, but the reason the series didn't fold early was definitely the 2nd Doctor and the directions taken by the writing team and the directors -- especially in his second season. Lots of inventive camerawork (not for sfx so much as for keeping visual interest in what's happening on screen).
Apparently a decision was made, temporarily, to have the TARDIS flying more normally rather than to be materializing and dematerializing: in "The Tomb of the Cybermen" the excavation team sees it land from space, and "The Fury from the Deep" actually shows it landing in the ocean from space. Though it also materializes and dematerializes, too. Whichever is more convenient to the plot: it didn't get down into the London subway in "The Web of Fear" from space! (...well, it kind of did, as the Great Intelligence catches it there first and drags it to Earth.)
Anyway, with the 2nd Doctor's 2nd season I've finally reached stories that I don't mind watching all the way through without mentally marking where they could stand to be edited down a lot. ;)
Also, with "Fury" (which I started this weekend), the first appearance of the sonic screwdriver. Back then it only did what it says on the tin, of course. :coolsmiley:
Most of the semi-legal reconstructions (including "Fury") can be found http://www.dailymotion.com/playlists/user/dwrecons/1 (//http://). (Semi-legal because the channel also contains completely illegal non-reconstructed eps from the "Lost in Time" DVDs.)
Eldoctorio's YouTube channel is more legal, since the BBC gives Loose Cannon a gentlemen's agreement to post them so long as LC takes them off when the BBC finds the eps, or does its own official recon or animation for an episode. http://www.youtube.com/user/ElDoctorio/videos?shelf_id=0&view=0&sort=dd

Question: Is Clara interfacing with the 'good' Dalek a bit of retconning back to 'Asylum of the Daleks'? Or has that earlier anomaly not been touched on yet?
Or should I just wait and find out what you guys already know? :))
Clara being in all those places in answered in the season finale of last years Matt Smith Doctor when she jumps into his raw timestream.
Except that the Dalek in the 'Asylum' who thought it was Clara and human still turned out to be just a Dalek.
yes but the scene I posted makes it happen. that Clara, among thousands, was in that place and time to effect that moment in the DOctors life.
think of it as a retroactive occurrence and interaction. the core of the show is about manipulating time after all.

Question: Is Clara interfacing with the 'good' Dalek a bit of retconning back to 'Asylum of the Daleks'?
I can answer this like this.
its two different Clara's.
Hm. If that is based on events in an episode to come I guess I'll just need to wait and see to understand.
if your already through the Matt Smith episodes its been explained.
I suggest you watch them again and drink more.
Dude, I don't get much TV time so watching the eps all over again is not likely. Otherwise I wouldn't have asked about the connection. Maybe google will be my friend on this.
but I answered your question.
I knew about all the Clara Oswalds everywhere, I just didn't remember until googling just now that the Asylum Dalek in question was actually a transplanted Human mind. I thought it was just a delusional machine since it used a different name, Oswin. That's why I wondered if there was a connection with the recent interface between the now Clara and the 'Good' Dalek.
The final episode of the current series is in two parts, and we have just watched the first part. I have to say that Peter Capaldi has turned out to be an excellent choice for the Doctor, but Jenna has just got better and better as the series has gone on.
200% agree. To bad shes going to be replaced.
Yeah, bad news that is. :(
FWIW I don't see another Donna on the horizon. not with this Doctor.
its been an excellent season overall I think.

That will never happen, a fact which will become obvious when you see the first half of the last episode!
IMO Clara was stealing the show from Matt Smith. Not that he was bad, just that all eyes were on her. Capaldi has the gravitas to be a strong Doctor beside her. This series feels far more like they are in a partnership than in the past. It always used to be the Doctor hero with the supportive sidekick. Even the jungle girl with Tim Baker had the Doctor knowing what to do to save the day. It was always the brains of the timelord instead of the traditional fighting hero.
How exactly do they get rid of such a strong character that they have presented as being with him all through time? They can't bump her off. There is still a risk she steals the show, which makes the Doctor un-necessary, therefore has the potential to kill the series.
my take on that theory is that your partially right but for the wrong reasons. Smiths Doctor had the wind taken out of his sails when the Ponds were taken away. he played this emotional hit pretty well. its Claras character and enthusiasm that was dragging the Doctor back into his normal state. thats why it felt that she was overpowering him in the show.
That would be a good theory if he was human. Supposedly he has ended alien races. It's tough to be squishy after that. If you look into the abyss, the abyss looks into you.

I did indeed. However, I though I would insert an oblique spoiler reference, so.... >:D >:D
On an almost completely unrelated topic: my birthday present for myself this year arrived today, namely the (North American version of) the collected Blu-Ray 1080p sets for series 1-7 of nuWho.
This is all very well and whatever, but it comes with some tchotchkes I couldn't give less of a hoot about and wished I didn't have to pay for: three collectors cards of Doctors 9-11 (yawn), a collector's comic (also yawn), a Blu of three fairly brief promotional videos one of which is on another blu of the set anyway (ditto yawn)...
...and a fairly solid universal remote control forged in the shape of the (current series) sonic screwdriver.
I can't imagine anyone but the die-hardest fans wanting the other mehs; but someone might feasibly want that remote control -- and I don't care for it.
So, I'd like to give it a good home. I'll probably put it up on ebay, but in case any Grogs here wanted to make some preliminary bids on it I thought I'd give y'all a shot first. :)
can I see a picture of it please?
Sure; will post next week.
I haven't take it out of its strappings yet, and probably won't (just to be safe).
This is the official site for the screwdriver: http://www.thewandcompany.com/sonic/
The site code there is too chunky for my old browser at work to run, so I can't tell you if there's any difference between "10th" and "11th" Doctor models (because I can't toggle the switch on the page); but visually comparing the page's default 11th model with what I've got, if I don't have 11 then there isn't any noticeable difference. Comparison with ebay sellers indicates this is 11th. (10 has a blue light.)
The official photo on that site doesn't quite do justice to how some of the parts actually look -- in real life the most plasticy parts don't look so plastic. But otherwise that's a good place to start.
The photo attached below was the best one I could get under the circumstances of the item in its packaging. (Click to embiggen I think.) It is SUPER SECURELY packaged, clearly for sale in stores not as part of a special mailing pack unavailable in stores. (The mailing pack was obviously not intended for retail, because anyone could easily pull off a few parts and get to the blus inside.) Some of the backing of the 'stand' it's lying on has a molded "wiring" texture, especially at the top and the bottom of the screwdriver, but in this photo it looks like some kind of damage so I thought I had better account for it. Embiggening the photo below by clicking on it will show the molded wiring of the box very clearly.
None of my cameras do a good job of closeups, but I can try on request.
Crazy people on ebay think they can sell this for a hundred dollars or more. (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1311.R6.TR12.TRC2.A0.H2.Xsonic+screwdriver&_nkw=sonic+screwdriver+remote&_sacat=0) To be fair, that's about what the approximate difference of value would be if the blus could be bought separately without the screwdriver (or the pointless comic and three collectable cards) -- some of the seasons aren't available in blu, or rather they were but in a limited faulty production that was highly critted for cheap upscaling. (The new blus are better and I seriously don't know why BBC isn't making them available for separate purchase. But I saw no plans for it. I guess they bought a bunch of these screwdrivers and damned if they're not going to get a profit back on them! :2funny: )
Note that this is not the Wii remote, which looks very similar but is selling for much less ($30 to $50). My impression from reading around is that in real life the Wii remote looks and feels much cheaper, too, though the photos are pretty similar (aside from the obvious lack of Wii controls here. ;) )
so what are you looking for it?
I can trade baby pics of Gus.

Im somewhat disappointed with that lot.
WTF happened Bawb? your mustache was supposed to be on top of this shit.
Its at the dry cleaners ATM.
Does the three-fingered claw pop out? -- I can't say from experience because I'm keeping it packaged. My impression is yes. I'll see if I can verify that elsehow.
What am I asking for it? Part of me wants to join the crazy people on ebay and see if I can pawn it back for the money I (effectively) paid instead of being able to just buy the blus. However, I haven't watched their bids to see if anyone is actually paying such money for it.
I'm willing to start the bid at $10. I can't seriously imagine anyone paying more for that, instead of for a game. But I'm not a collector.
I'll start a new thread for it, so as not to distract from Season 8 (and other seasonal) discussions here. :) But I'll link back to it.
