QuoteAt first glance, these may look like Russian Orthodox iconography from the Middle ages. But they are actually striking illustrations of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien by Ukrainian artist Sergei Iukhimov.

Iukhimov's watercolor illustrations have graced Russian-language editions of Lord of the Rings, and we're honestly jealous that we didn't grow up with these faux-Medieval interpretations of Tolkien's epic. They evoke the legendary feel of Middle Earth, but also add a sense of whimsy.

The key to surviving this site is to not say something which ends up as someone's tag line - Steelgrave

"their citizens (all of them counted as such) glorified their mythology of 'rights'...and lost track of their duties. No nation, so constituted, can endure." Robert Heinlein, Starship Troopers

"45 minutes of pooping Tribbles being juggled by a drunken Horta would be better than Season 1 of TNG." - SirAndrewD

"you don't look at the mantelpiece when you're poking the fire" - Bawb

"Can't 'un' until you 'pre', son." - Gus

Martok

Well those are definitely different.  Thanks for sharing!
"Like we need an excuse to drink to anything..." - Banzai_Cat
"I like to think of it not as an excuse but more like Pavlovian Response." - Sir Slash

"At our ages, they all look like jailbait." - mirth

"If we had lines here that would have crossed all of them. For the 1,077,986th time." - Gusington

"Government is so expensive that it should at least be entertaining." - airboy

"As long as there's bacon, everything will be all right." - Toonces

Some of those are awesome, thanks for sharing the link!
"No wants, no needs, we weren't meant for that, none of us.  Man stagnates if he has no ambition, no desire to be more than he is."

Michael Dorosh

A movie reviewer once said that "300" was what the Battle at Thermopylae would have looked like if the Spartans had made a movie about it themselves.

I think these illustrations are a lot closer to what Middle Earth would look like, if the characters in that world were to illustrate it. M.E. is supposed to be set in a world whose technology is relatively medieval, etc. so this style of artwork seems to make much more visual sense than one might think at first blush.

"I will return before you can say 'antidisestablishmentarianism'."

"A man may fight for many things. His country, his principles, his friends. The glistening tear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn."

One of the commenters spotted Boromir in the photo (the council of Elrond that ooks like the last supper)

"Neque Mordor simpliciter ingredi."  :)
