It turns out that the same turn I build my first settler, I also discover another enemy to the northwest, a mystic portal to the southeast with a big, scary Earth Elemental on it AND that I am at the southern edge of the map (as denoted by the straight white line at the bottom of the map).

In response to all the activity around me, I build three new units: a Warrior, a Settler and an Archer, in that order.  Aggressive use of Settlers is a favorite tactic of mine and I think should be pursued vigorously.  Once the city a Settler represents is built, you get three benefits.  1) a missile platform.  2) a fort.  And 3) an expansion of your zone of control.  I think 3 is actually the most important aspect.

Thank you, sir.  He just looked like a "Pete."

And  it's the MSG in the Chinese food that tests you, Tent, not the Intestinal Fortitude ;)

Lesser Heal is researched and now for some offensive firepower.

I have founded my first city, which brings me to a total of three.

A Craftsmen District is built in the capital, satisfying my quest and rewarding me with 50 Gold.  A quick note about building placement.  Each hex that holds a building counts as half a movement point for units.   So they work like roads.  It behooves us to connect all our cities in such a fashion.

Here we see Pete gaining another level and adding +1 Experience per Turn to his bag of buffs.

And now Lesser Fireball will join Lesser Shadow Bolt in the offensive arsenal.

With Gold production humming along I decide to build the Shrine in order to get the buff.

Much to my continued good fortune, the Earth Elemental, and more importantly the Mystic Portal, have been quiet for the last several turns.  That leaves me to concentrate on the Neutral city of Geludurum.  It's got a fort with 150 Hit Points and a unit of Skeleton Veterans in it.  The Vets outrank my Warriors, so I have to be careful how to proceed.

Lesser Fireball has been researched and now I go for Harvest Blessing.  It will take ten turns to discover, but, I find that it's better to research a spell from each point on the research chart rather frequently.  It seems to uncover more useful spells faster (come on Fertile Lands!!!).
