When I worked for the Army, I worked a lot in C-UAS.  I spent a lot of time at Fort Sill, and demonstrated my systems at MFIX, which is mentioned in the article.

We have some interesting times coming up.

A Stinger missile comes in at $38,000. A 'small drone' is a mere fraction of that. Overkill much?

the Stingers were bought and paid for 25 years ago.  might as well use em or lose em.

hellfire missiles vs. small groups of terrorists -- overkill yes, but it does take pieces off the table

Those Afghani stingers are ancient by now. I've heard that they most likely have not aged well.
