My grandfather was a Gunners Mate 2nd class on the New Jersey. I once had romantic images of him operating the 16 inch guns, but based on a grainy picture in his 1951 Korean War tour book, (which I have) it looks like he worked with the port side AA guns.

Well, working the AA batteries could be pretty hazardous.
On the Essex, most of the port side AA guns were the General Quarters of the messmates.  (Didn't take a lot of skill to hump all the 40mm shells to the Bofor guns, or to the 20mm Oerlikons.  (Funny how Sweden put out such good light AA guns.))
A Judy dive bomber was hit during an attack and brushed the flight deck. 
Most of the gunners and their crews were killed by the crash or the flames.
