Think I read somewhere that the british had a remote controlled target ship during the 30s and the Second World War.
The battleship Centurion, a veteran of Jutland (?), was made to be an unmanned target vessel.
Have no idea how this was done, or if I'm dreaming this up.  Think the RN had a way of fitting six inch gun liners into the 15" guns on their battleships (Hood, Warspite, Royal Oak, etc.) and could shoot at Centurion with little real damage inflicted.  It gave the gunners and controllers full simulation of using their systems.
