Lasers, while suffering the same line of site limitations as projectiles, eliminate the friendly fire risk and are faster, travelling at the speed of light in the medium.  That speed in theory should allow them to successfully (and affordably) shoot down enemy UAVs.

Bold is mine.... how do they figure just because it's laser that it automatically eliminates friendly fire..... lasers kill friends just as easily as enemies.....  :P

the line of sight restricions will mean that any targeting system will probably be a mixture of optics, radar and laser ranging.  the shooter will literally be looking at the target.

So far the stories I've read consider it a close-in weapon used on slow moving targets. More like Phaser 3's from Star Fleet Battles than long range Phaser 1's.

Still, it's a fine start. Pretty cool to know that what was scifi 60 years ago is now coming online.
