The promise back then probably got votes, and now I guess they're hoping the cancellation will probably keep votes around the London, Ontario area.

Heh!  Truthfully, we'd only need to lose about 4 of 'em to afford a carrier!

Why buy a new APC when the US is giving away MRAPs at fire sale prices?

I still haven't figured that one out yet.

I know the government often does dumb things, but they caught me flat footed on this one. I'm not looking for a rational explanation - there is none. But can anyone explain what passes for thought on this process?

Why don't they just give them to Karzai for the Afghan Army and write it off as a contribution and write the equivalent amount of aid off the projected budget

Airborne Rifles

As the article states, it is very expensive to move these vehicles out of Afghanistan. As a result, a lot are being incinerated instead of being shipped out.  One of jobs while I was there was reducing my battalion's MRAP fleet and shipping the excess to Kandahar to be exfilled or destroyed. The bottom line is that it is much easier to get the soldiers out then the equipment, and we are on a tight timeline to get everything out by next year. The only land routes out pass through Pakistan and Russia, not exactly people we want to be beholden to.

I'm not sure why we aren't giving them to the Afghan army, since those guys, while often good soldiers, are driving around in Toyota pickup trucks.

2B for 108 vehicles? 18M each?
vs
1B for 10000 vehicles 100k each. 50% budget saving with 100 times the number of vehicles.

Ok lets see what they do....

Of course the more expensive vehicle will shrug off RPGs like they are thrown rocks and keep the crew alive through hits from 500lb IEDs, so...you get what you pay for.

Not unexpected in light of the F35 and Cyclone fiascos. I am sure that this government will manage to screw up the much lauded shipbuilding program too!
